"My wife and I had the parfait with thyme brioche and kumquat compote. Far and away still the best parfait. My wife then had the Free range chicken breast sumac butternut squash, crushed potatoes, tenderstem broccoli, cep sauce simply amazing. I had the Slow cooked lamb belly anchovy, prunes, celeriac, minted peas, potato rosti, pickled mushrooms, lamb jus. I don't like lamb but on the basis that this chef knows his business I ordered it and it was just fantastic. The celeriac was firmer than it should have been but that's nit picking. I had the cranachan ice cream with chocolate torte from their Burns Night menu. Being Scottish, I have to tell you that I did not taste whisky and the marmalade was finely julienned orange or perhaps kumquat rind. The oat clusters weren't the traditional style you find in cranachan but the raspberries and the overall ice cream was delicious and I applaud the attempt. I'd take issue with the description of chocolate torte but the chocolate sponge was immense; perhaps the finest I've ever eaten, complete with nice chocolate mousse and lemon ? sauce. The banana creme brulee was excellent if you liked banana; vanilla is better but sometimes you have to experiment. Earl Grey tea was excellent. The Harrow is a great local place to visit and has a chef who clearly knows his business but more importantly delivers consistently. My only complaint; it's not within walking distance."

"Since I live in the area, I have been a semi-regular customer other Rose and Crown at Ivanhoe for many years. However, of late – and particularly on a Sunday lunch time– I have encountered a rather unprofessional and unsavoury practice that surely is guaranteed to put a customer’s back up. Although the menu clearly states what food is available, when one come s to order a Chicken Caesar salad for example, I was told that “chicken is reserved for those who have pre-booked” (and there is no sort of disclaimer on the menu . The reasoning appears to be that it is not that that particular dish is unavailable despite being on the menu, but rather a key ingredient is reserved for someone who has pre-booked a table, and therefore may or may not actually turn up, or indeed may or may not order a dish with chicken in it. I have never encountered such ridiculous policy before, which seems to treat its customer with utter contempt. I was not the only one to voice my displeasure, as when I later passed through the bar, I overheard a lady (who I suspect was from overseas, was seriously remonstrating with the bar staff over the same issue. However, a rather unattractive and older white haired woman – who I assume was a local resident and therefore got to the chicken first – seemed to find this all rather amusing. So my advice I don’t go there, as obviously you custom is only welcome in possible preference to others and when it suits the owners. Hospitality is obviously not the Rose and Crown’s real business, rather it is only taking your money."

"My mrs had just done a 6 day shift at the hospital so I thought I’d treat us to a Sunday lunch we arrived at 1300 (on a Sunday) and the place was dead. Friendly waitress took us to a table and we ordered drinks then we were told that due to an event they weren’t doing Sunday lunchif we’d been told upon arrival they weren’t doing Sunday lunch we wouldn’t have stayed. The alternatives were terrible, my mrs is vegetarian so she ordered a vegetarian pie with seasonal veg a few minutes after ordering someone came along and asked her if she was vegan or vegetarian as the pie has meat in it. When we asked her what she meant she seemed to not know what vegan or vegetarian meant, she muttered and wandered off. we didn’t see her again, and we still don’t understand what she meant. The seasonal veg was. Over boiled frozen peas and a tiny dollop of mash. Oh and gravy, we couldn’t be bothered to ask if the gravy was vegetarian, but I am 99% sure it wasn’t but she needed it to drown the dry mash and peas. I ordered the mixed grill, it was terrible , if you’ve ever wondered how thin a gammon slice needs to be before it’s just bacon dine here.. the thinest gammon I’ve ever seen, but also the fattiest, a lump of chicken that looked and tasted like it had been boiled, and a steak that was so tough (no steak knife was offered) that I had to ask for some sauce to mask the flavour (I never eat steak with sauce). I can’t be bothered to describe the kids pasta , but he didn’t eat it. My mrs hates it when I make a fuss so I bit my tongue (nicer than the steak lol), but at the end I had to say something and we got our drinks taken off the bill. I also flashed the Mrs’ blue light card and got more off the bill. Disappointed."
