"Without doubt Auberge de Layotte is a fun place to go and an experience but its definitely not haute cuisine and I cannot say I liked the food that much. It claims to be serving the kind of food people eat in the Perigord Noir...before the tourists came and that may well be true. There is no menu, you eat what you are given accompanied by a strange tasting sweet home made apperitif, fairly crude litre of red wine and some home made digestifs. We sat at a long table with pretty china in a covered area that was quite dark lit with lanterns although outside it was still light. We started with a thin vegetable soup that was just about ok, followed by home cured ham and sanglier pate with butter beans in a mustardy slightly curried dressing which was good and the best part of the meal for us. This was followed by confit duck which had been boiled rather roasted or fried so no crispy skin, no sauce and just some greasy un-crispy sarladaise potates. A dressed green salad would have made all the difference. Then we had lamb chops cooked in what seemed to be curried water. The fat was still on the chops and uncrisped again and I really was not keen. After that was cheese. No complaints there. And then thin slices of walnut cake remember I said cake not sponge so fairly solid and not unpleasant but not what I would want for dessert served with a choice of fruit or herb syrups. Monsier Le Chef is a great entertainer and you can hear his booming laugh as he wanders about talking to the guests. Its a fun experience and also very hard to find!"
