"This is an odd one.If you stand in Metz’s Place Général de Gaulle, your back to the immense and magnificent basalt-built railway station, and look at the imposing red stonework of the ABC Brasserie, you may conclude the restaurant was once part of one of the great railroad hotels from the late 19th or first half of the 20th centuries.But someone has made the catastrophic error of gutting an interior that was probably from that era and replacing it with something soulless, bland and devoid of any ambiance.That said, the food is good. The two generous portions from the evening formule, were reasonably priced at 24 Euros; plus six for a carafe of excellent red wine.My salmon encroût could not be faulted and neither could my wife’s steak frite.At a purely personal level I would have preferred my ‘encroût’ to have been pastry rather than shredded potato, but that’s how it’s done in Lorraine.The platter of cheeses with which I followed was extremely generous with five large slices. Though, surprisingly, no local varieties which was slightly disappointing.Service is pleasant, attentive and impressively professional in the French brasserie mode and it is sad these stylish performers do not have a more appropriate stage.Ironically, the small dining area on a remarkably quiet Friday evening was a slightly elevated ‘stage’ above the very long bar. The latter was occasionally occupied by working folk who spent a quick 20 minutes over a ‘snifter’; perhaps on their way home from a shift on the railway or other local undertaking. It lent a rather bizarre touch to the procedings, but was admittedly ‘authentic brasserie’ and provided what very little atmosphere there was."

We were terribly jetlagged, underdressed for the restaurant, and our French was weak at best, but we were seated at a good table and received excellent service. The food was excellent.

A justly famous restaurant dating to the pre-war era. I dine here every time I'm in Metz. Fine, reliable food; good wines and the kind of professional waiters one rarely sees these days.

The waiter did not speak English, and I did not speak French, but with a few gestures we had one of the best meals of our lives. Salad Gormand and Quiche Lorraine, with a perfect bottle of Vin Blance........and boom what a day

We went for a breakfast there with my girlfriend .. the lady who was in the service (approximately 55years old)she was so boring when she show us... we order the breakfast and it was really bad.. even when we asked for the bill she didn't smile... cause we were thinking that we were disturbing her from her coffee !! ...without too much sophistication but offering really good value for money, go for the set menu, fresh produce, typical French / Lorraine cuisine, interior decoration somewhat outdated, tables on the terrace out the front are rather pleasant though, weather permitting, typical brasserie type staff, presenting you with a good occassion to practise your French...:-))

Unfamiliar with Metz, but a busy brasserie with good art on the walls and a waiting staff with an average age of 50+ augurs well. Not an exciting menu, but everything was brilliantly done, and the service was first class. We ate the moules, a steak, a salade au chevre chaud, a veal dish. All exceptionally good of their kind. Portions in this area are generous, and we didn't even try the prix fixe pudding. Wine cheap and drinkable, very happy all round.

Service was good, and the view was great. Enjoyed eating outside looking at the train station on a nice day. We split the Quiche Lorraine as an appetizer - very good. Hubby got the choucroute and I got the Lorraine salad, which is where I went wrong. Menu wasn't in English but thought it would be good to try their salad named after the region. It was a giblet salad. Not really my thing but can't fault them for it! Recommend eating here, just not the Lorraine salad! Visualizza piatti

...on a Sunday night, when most restaurants are closed. Accommodating service, although I guess they come across with a bit of an attitude when you do not speak French (nothing unusual here for a French Brasserie / Restaurant). Mind you, the French have noticed some years ago that they are not living on an island in the middle of nowhere but in a global world and their attitude is slowly changing now. For the food, the starter of Mussels was very disappointing with the mussels being of rather poor quality, tiny, pale and not really fresh. The main course of veal was good, the meat cooked to perfection with a rich sauce. Vegetables were bland and fries overcooked. Seems to be a bit of a hit a...

If you have a train to catch, you better be very insistant about getting served in good time, because the service was very slow the afternoon that we ate here. It was a bright sunny day and all the many outdoor tables were taken, so the place was pretty busy, but we've seen far busier. They're just slow.However, if you're not in a hurry, you can expect some very good food. So if you're the patient type, have plenty of time or only having a single course and then scrambling, you'll probably enjoy this brasserie. It's directly across the square from the beautiful and unusual Metz station. Price for a three course lunch menu including a glass of wine and dessert ran about 35 Euros. A very fair...
