"Possibly one of the best open secrets in Frankfurt. To know what is happening and when in this "secret" semi-red-light district location you have to sign up to the newsletter. You are then informed of upcoming evenings and the menus and have the chance (strongly recommended) to reserve seats. There are 2 sittings per evening (18:00 and 21:00). We decided we didn't want to feel rushed and opted for the later (more on this later). The "restaurant" is in a normal office/residential building on the 1rst floor, very industrial, very berlin-style open-plan room with open kitchen, long tables with a conglomeration of closely packed chairs. Our reservation hadn't gone through but the charming lady at the door found us a space anyway (you are seated really close to others along the tables, with a wonderful bussle and buzz of people eating, talking, drinking, laughing etc - not a romantic fine dining scenario). The first thing that struck me was the looooong que at the bar. We split up with one of us securing the seats while I stood in line for approx 20mins to order drinks and food. If you need to work on your inner Buddha - this is a good place to start - as I learnt over the course of the evening. We chose a small salad for starters and 2 pasta dishes for mains (the antipasti were sold out as was one of the other main dishes - the revenge of the later sitting), a bottle of decent red, grabbed a bread basket and sat down to wait. And wait we did - the bottle of wine was almost finished and 2 bread baskets later our salad arrived. By this time we were adequately mellowed to smile it off (inner Buddha Pt 2) and were chatting to our table neighbours about the food and the place. After another 20 mins the chef/owner arrived to say that the pasta (safran pasta with shrimps) we'd ordered was out and would we like something else (inner Buddha Pt 3). We re-chose our mains (following his recommendation) and he offered us a wine, which we gladly accepted (assuming this was an attempt to appease hungry guests). Unfortunately we had to wait another 20-30 mins for our rather uninspiring pasta to arrive (inner Buddha Pt 4). It was tasty and fresh but sadly lacked the WOW factor. Maybe it was just the fact we were very hungry (and slightly tipsy) by now but even though we were disappointed. We continued afterwards with a tiramisu and a delectable barrique grappa and coffees all the while deep in conversation with the people right and left of us round the table. By now we were in the land of laughing Buddha and all was well. When we decided to stop when things were at their best and queued again for approx 10-15 mins to settle the bill (inner Buddha was too tipsy to care by now) - only to discover that the wine offered had been charged in full (bill was 98.50 in total for 1 salad, 2 pasta dishes, wine, coffees and grappa - not exactly cheap eats but worth it).All in all a most enjoyable evening although this was mainly down to the atmosphere of the place, the great people we chatted to at out table and the amount of alcohol consumed.Would I go back? - definitely! But next time I would go earlier or eat something beforehand if booking the later sitting. And next time I hope I don't have to work with my inner Buddha quite so much."
