"We visited this pub last night to watch a football match and confirmed with the lady behind the bar that it was ok to watch it. After buying a drink and watching the first 20 minutes of it, the bar maid wanted to switch channels to another match. I have no problem with them wanting to show a more popular match but do have a problem in that we were not told this in the beginning. Had we been told when we 1st walked in, we could have found somewhere else to watch it. Food used to be excellent but the last 3 times we have eaten here it has been quite poor, so much so that we chose to eat at home last night rather than eat there. It is also sometimes like a playground in there with noisy children running around at all hours. With so much competition in the area, there are far better pubs to go to."

This is a bit of the beaten track but well worth a visit. A proper pub with a warm welcome, friendly people and great beer!

Excellent value for money; great location and friendly, helpful staff. Clean comfortable room...requested quiet room as arriving after long flight from Australia which staff arranged.

I have been dining and drinking at this restaurant for over 20 years since I moved to the village. They consistently serve well-stocked beers and delicious meals. It's a great spot to enjoy a meal.

Wanted to go for some food and this place was well reccomended we walked in very unwelcoming place seed to be a locals bar, ordered a drink went and sat down and all we could taste was dust, the sofas looked like they'd had some rough parties on with stains everywhere. Quickly drank up and left

Staff were friendly enough but not a lot of atmosphere. Very disappointed with the Sea Bass Linguine. Very small piece for the price I paid and didn't rate the pasta.. My husband was pleased with his lamb shank though. I can't drink alcohol so have coffee. The cups were more for Expresso coffee I thought.

This is a true village pub experience with no airs or graces. The staff are fantastic, there is a great selection of beers and the food is delicious. You'll always receive a warm welcome and excellent service. This is the kind of pub that reminds you of how pubs used to be, and how they should be. If you're in the area, make sure to stop by!

We visit this restaurant once a year when my MG is being serviced nearby. Five years ago, we had Sunday lunch here and though I didn't leave a review, I recall it being quite satisfactory. Nowadays, we often stop by for a drink on Fridays and are welcomed like old friends. While the beer isn't to our liking, there is a great variety of gin and tonic options to choose from, and most importantly, the landlord is always friendly.

This carvery serves the best Sunday dinner I have ever had, just like home cooking. Good choice of well cooked meats and help ypurself to all vegetables. Massive yorkshires and excellent gravy all for £9.50 and you also get a choice of pudding, again a good portion. During the week the pub does pie and a pint, fish and chips, pizza night etc. All the meals we have eaten here have been excellent and we are going again on Friday!

"The Stag Inn is a delightful looking pub overlooking the small green in the village of Barkston near Grantham. Internally the pub is clean and tidy with a range of two and four seater tables with New England shades of light blue on the painted table legs in the restaurant area. We didn’t venture into the pub side so can’t vouch for the decor in there. We arrived unannounced just after opening time of 12 and were offered a table with no difficulty. There was a menu of the usual offerings of fish and chips and a range of burgers together with roast salmon, chargrilled pork chop, a leek and cauliflower cheese pot pie, ham egg and chips and a vegetable lasagne amongst others. A specials chalkboard hung on the far wall and the crab and prawn salad with Mediterranean bread sounded so good we both opted for it. That was a mistake as we were to find out. The meals were reasonably quick to arrive and were served up in two large bowls with a dusting of paprika round the edges. What hit me immediately was the large flaccid green lettuce leaf draped over the edge of the bowl, together with a whole half-a-lemon that we each had. A small wedge would be perfect. The bread tasted sweet and was as far from the Mediterranean as it could possibly be apart from the occasional input of sundried tomato. What irked me most though was that the bread was delivered up pre-buttered with what looked like some bright yellow catering spread. A small ramakin of real butter between the two of us would work so much better. When asked if everything was okay I mentioned this and was told that chef would be informed. Having said all that the crab and prawn salad was full of flavour and sat on a nice mixed salad of red peppers, lettuce, red onion and cornichons. A word of advice to the wise….. don’t sit at the table near the restaurant counter as this is where the pub’s phone is located. On at least two occasions the phone was left to ring unanswered by the staff, presumably as they were busy elsewhere (the pub was by no means full) and was right behind my head! The volume of the ringer was high and it would have been a more pleasant experience for us if, firstly, it was answered and, secondly, the volume was turned down. On the plus side the staff were polite and helpful but the food not so great."
