"Booked a table for a Sunday afternoon to have Sunday roast. Called the pub in the morning as I had booked twice and needed to cancel one booking so someone else could have the table and the gentleman I spoke to confirmed the time and asked us to arrive a little earlier so that we could get our order in to the kitchen before closing. This wasn’t a problem at all however, we arrived 15 minutes before our time and the 3 ladies behind the bar acted strangely. All turned around talking to each other, not greeting or acknowledging us, and one walked off. After a minute or so, one woman turned around and acknowledged us. We said we have a booking to which she said “you haven’t checked your voicemail have you”. I thought this was odd as we hadn’t even given her our name. Checked both phones and no voicemails but she proceeded to say there was an issue with the kitchen which meant we couldn’t eat. There was no empathy from the staff, it was more like we were being an inconvenience to them. We then had to drive around and find somewhere else to eat with our one year old son. Will never book to go there again due to the rude staff and lack of organisation. Terrible service. A sincere apology or actually calling us to cancel would have been appreciated and accepted but neither of us received a missed call or voicemail so they just lied instead. Service: 1"

The Sunday roast at this restaurant is great, and the staff are very helpful and friendly. Service is rated 5 out of 5, and the location is also a 5.

Lovely pub with welcoming service. However, I found the Marston's beer I ordered to be lacking in flavor. I would rate the rooms, service, and location as a 4 out of 5. The hotel's standout feature is its peaceful atmosphere.

We were out walking in the area and saw the signs for the Black Bull, glad we did, amazing Sunday roast and the gravy is awesome I had to get some bread to finish it off. Ciders and beers on tap with a relaxed atmosphere a great place to stop and recover. Service: 5 Location: 5

We visited the pub twice this weekend. Once for the pub warming for the new owners and again for Sunday roast. Both were lovely events and we were welcomed like family. The roast was delicious and the service was excellent. We'll definitely be visiting several times in the near future!

Rooms are just ok for a night stop, can be a bit noisy at times. They so have free parking and a pub not sure of the timings. Note: no one at reception to check you ok so had to just leave my keys in the room and leave, no instructions etc given during check-in Rooms: 3 Service: 2 Location: 3

"We 're looking forward to trying the Pheasant again on a normal day. We went on Boxing Day and it was pretty disastrous. Meant to be a treat but it certainly wasn 't. Starters were nice, no cooking involved apart from the pesto. Then the mains. The beef was grey, not pink as I was told it would be but it was tender. The roast potatoes tasted a bit old but there were plenty. The Chantenay carrots were very soft. The Savoy cabbage was perfect but the portion was tiny. The gravy was nice but we got a different variety when we asked for more. The Yorkshire pudding was the main disaster; it seemed old, and very hard to the point of shattering. Desserts. The sticky toffee pudding was fine although the serving of sauce was very mean. The clotted cream with it is, in my opinion, the best way to serve this pudding, it 's a relief from all the sweetness. The apple crumble was terrible; it came in a bowl with the custard already in it with the pudding. The apple was sour and the crumble was squidgy stodge. The service was fine although some staff not yet fully professional. We would have expected a welcoming hello and goodbye but that didn 't happen. Our overall feeling was that there was serious penny pinching going on with the mains and desserts but this is a very bad idea when you are judged on your last meal but we do intend to try again because it 's such a wonderful building and we 've had many good experiences in The Pheasant, perhaps before the present owners, we 're not really sure."
