"I visited with my brother last Sunday and really wanted to love this café. First impressions were good: the location at the foot of the Downs was beautiful and the venue was set in a lovely old restored barn. We entered and alas downhill from that point on. A greeting and ordering procedure would have been nice but we were ignored so we milled around feeling a bit foolish, then picked up a menu and found an (unwiped table outside. The smell of frying bacon was enticing so we ordered bacon baps only to be told that the baps had run out! It was only 1.45pm. The reason given was that they had been busy . On a popular walkers and cyclists route on a fine weekend the demand should have been predictable and catered for: after all this café has been running for four years. I then tried to order scones but they had all gone too. We finally settled for lime cheesecake with raspberries (sadly no raspberries, ran out of those too , tasty but topping was melting; banana cake (delicious and coffee (lukewarm . The coffee was delivered after 20 minutes; 15 minutes later we 'd drunk it and still no sign of the cakes. When I went into the café the owner was holding a bunch of tabs and it was clear the system such as it is had unravelled: the owner herself said it was chaos. I was assured the cake was coming so ordered another coffee. The cakes came but the coffee didn 't (not written down so I had to remind again. People had been arriving but were being turned away as the café was I believe closing early. Our bill for two cakes (no reduction for the missing raspberries! , three coffees and dreadful service came to £17.50 which I reckon is pricey for such a poor experience. Reading previous reviews going back four years a common thread reoccurs: the whole operation falls to pieces when a 'busy ' period is encountered. Lessons should have been learnt by now namely, experienced staff, efficient system and sufficient food stocks. This café has such potential (I know, I have worked in several and with some effort it should reach it."

Very rude owner approached our table asking us to pay for a mistake with our order which was their fault. I have never been asked to pay for an error that was make by the kitchen staff. We will never return.

This restaurant is my favorite spot for a Sunday afternoon outing. The food and coffee are consistently excellent, as is the friendly service from Gail and Anna. I highly recommend this place, with the added bonus of great views of the South Downs!

We love this place. Tucked away in such a wonderful position and the barn itself is fascinating. The food served there is always good and the people who work here are dedicated to friendly service and great food. Thankyou to those who run this lovely place.

On our walk when we came to this cafe. As we hadn’t visited before went in to use the toilet to see what it was like. We were not welcomed at all and in fact the staff were very rude. No excuse as it was empty!! . So no, we didn’t stay for a bite to eat or drink! Staff obviously need customer training. We won’t be visiting again. Not sure how long this cafe will survive!

I have visited this cafe a few times and can’t recommend it enough. The owners are great and the cakes are phenomenal! I love trying the variety of cakes and love it when fruits from their own land make their way into the cakes! The lunch is always good and, although I’m not a salad person, I love the kale salad they have been doing! It’s so much better than your iceberg, tomatoes and onions! I really recommend this cafe as a great place to stop for after a walk around the Downs! And it’s dog friendly. Visualizza piatti

I went to this cafe with some friends and accidentally left my walking pole behind. When I returned two days later to retrieve it, the owner simply stuck it in the mud and walked away, displaying rude behavior. It was evident that they do not value their customers. I would not recommend this place to anyone. The food is expensive, which I can understand, but the lack of heating in the main dining area on a cold December day could have been an oversight. However, the deliberate rudeness of the owner is unacceptable. Avoid this cafe at all costs.

GoTravelling123 in Worthing, United Kingdom received a review on June 10, 2023 criticizing the restaurant for terrible customer service. The reviewer claimed that the owner was very rude when approaching their table to ask for additional payment due to a mistake made by the kitchen staff. The reviewer expressed disappointment in being asked to pay for an error that was not their fault and stated that they will not be returning to the restaurant. In response to the owner's reply to the review, the reviewer clarified that they had already paid for 2 large cafetières of coffee at £10 each totaling £20 when they placed their order. They were told by the staff that this amount would be sufficient...

"My mother and I had been following the Masterchef Pro comp ' last year and were really keen to sample some of the winner, Tom Hamblet 's, food. We travelled a 4 hour round trip for the experience. We don 't eat at fine dining restaurants often but we are foodies. Firstly, the setting of the restaurant is very lavish and comfortable with warm low lighting. That said, the dinner experience was a little too dark for my mother so that 's something to think about if you struggle with eyesight and low lighting. The service was friendly, attentive and speedy/efficient. The food: I 'll start with the dessert because that was a real pleasure for us. We both loved the flavours of Tom 's end of series winning dessert so the meal ended on a high (we ordered the Olive Oil sponge with lemon curd). I recommend not ruining your palette with the overly sweet petit four that are placed in front of you following dessert unfortunately ours were more sugar flavoured than any other identifiable flavour. Our starters and mains were very VERY underwhelming. They arrived looking beautiful, neat and tidy but failed to deliver on taste. I had wanted the celeriac themed starter but the waiting staff told me the vegan/veggie starters and mains were created by their head chef and not Tom. That was disappointing as his 3 month residency was the reason we 'd visited the restaurant. We ended up both having the lobster starters after the waiting staff recommended it highly as either a starter or an additional dish to share. The claw meat was minimal and tough and the foam mousse took centre stage on the plate. Whilst the plate had lots of textures to it, we felt it was unbalanced and generally with no 'wow ' to it. We enjoyed the coffee and rye bread with butter and pollen/fennel that came prior to this thought. I ordered the Guinea Fowl as a main after the waiter described it as a gamey, dark and tender meat. I feel like a better description to someone that hasn 't had guinea fowl before would be 'it 's like a chicken breast with a different flavour '. This is what arrived in front of me and I actually found it was quite dry and not dark at all! I would never have ordered anything that resembled chicken breast anyway so I felt ill informed about my choice. I also thought the girolles were overwhelmingly tart. I didn 't enjoy my main. Mum 's Hogget was nice but average for her too. Last comment I 've never in my life paid £6.50 for less than 1.5ltrs mineral water beware! I don 't care how much money you have it 's water!!!"

"Service: 11/10 Starter: Calamari Duck Parfait - 10/10 Main Course 1: 50-Day Aged Fillet Mignon with Bordelaise Sauce (cooked *Blue*) - 100/10 Main Course 2: Fish and Chips - 9/10 Dessert: Hot Brownie - Over 9000! I want to extend my thanks to the front-of-house team for their warm welcome. Although we arrived a bit late, they were incredibly accommodating. Special thanks to Irvana (I hope I spelled that correctly) for providing excellent service! My steak experience took me on a nostalgic journey—like Anton Ego savoring his ratatouille in Gusto’s restaurant. It reminded me of a family meal in Holland during my childhood, where I had my first real steak. This may have even surpassed that memory! I was initially hesitant about dining at Miller and Carter since it's a chain restaurant, but if you're feeling the same way, let me assure you: don't be. While it may not be the cheapest option, it definitely deserves a smart-casual dress code that anyone who understands proper dining etiquette should respect. Curious, I browsed through other reviews, and I found it hard to believe anyone could leave a 1-star review without sounding like a “Karen.” It’s important to take reviews with a grain of salt—this is truly a fantastic restaurant! In summary, if you're a fan of steak, this place will take great care of you and provide excellent recommendations for how to enjoy your meal just the way you like it. Perfect!"
