"Visited here for lunch today as it 's our local but in recent times we have opted for the Holly Blue. We should have gone to the Holly Blue today too. They run the same menu but the standard of food is not. Today we ordered 1 of the Club sandwich (no mayo or butter) and 2 ham and cheese toasties (but one as a sandwich with no mustand mayo for toddler). Nice easy. After paying I was told that the club sandwich is mixed chicken mayo. Menu says Toasted Club Sandwich: crisp streaky bacon, succulent chicken breast, tomato, shredded cos, mayonnaise, on sliced white or wholemeal bloomer, skin on fries and this is what you get at the Holly Blue. It doesn 't say chicken mayo. Staff really couldn 't have cared left and as a result I ended up paying more for an alternative as they aren 't selling what they advertise. I ordered a chicken burger (no mayo) and the girl came back after I 'd ordered to confirm it had BBQ mayo and was that ok....... obviously not as it 's mayo proper hard work! The Ham and Cheese sandwich came out covered in mustard mayo and was sent back when it came back out it came out with no butter just ham, cheese and bread £6.75 that cost! No apology. This pub has massively gone downhill since the former manager has moved on and we won 't be returning."

The staff were attentive. The food was extremely good and reasonably priced. The atmosphere was great. I would recommend going as it has recently changed management.

Food was poor. Service was even worse , waited half an hour for our dessert order to be taken and went to the bar to give it to the bar staff. Waited another half an hour and cancelled it in the end and asked for the bill.

The best place in Basingstoke.....NOT. This pub has the potential to be nice, but instead it attracts a rough crowd, making it an unappealing place for a drink. The staff smelled of cigarettes, which was a turn-off. I won't be returning.

I have recently moved to Basingstoke and The Portsmouth Arms is rapidly becoming my 'local '. Went for Sunday lunch with my family. It was busy but the staff were friendly and there was a good atmosphere there. The food was excellent and we all enjoyed the visit. Good value. Thoroughly recommended.

Not brilliant really. I have eaten here a few years back and it was nice. My lunch was fine but others in our group had burnt food. Also my Husbands burger and chips was the same size as my Sons childs portion! Most portions were pretty poor. It also took a very long time to get the food. Obviously sadly short of staff like everywhere. We will not be back.

I'm due to move to the area and decided that I would try this pub restaurant. I was there at lunch time opening (12 mid day) and there were a handful of customers. A friendly warm welcome. I ordered a fish finger sandwich. This turned out to be very substantial with chips and salad. Excellent! There is a full lunch evening menu which looks good. I will no doubt be there again.

We were very disappointed with our experience at this restaurant. We all ordered the Sunday roast, which was supposed to be the best in Basingstoke. Unfortunately, we had to wait over 40 minutes for our food because a large party ordered just before us. When our meals finally arrived, they consisted of six different vegetables and a huge Yorkshire pudding on top of only three small slices of tough, overcooked beef. On the positive side, the service was excellent.

We stopped in for a few pints and started to get hungry, so we decided to order some chips. The price of £3 for a bowl of chips seemed reasonable, so we placed our order. However, when the chips arrived at our table, we were shocked by how small the portion was - maybe about 10 chips. It was confusing because just a few days earlier, we had gotten a much larger bowl of chips for the same price. We understand that prices can go up over time, but this felt like a rip-off.

Looking for a central venue for a family pre-Christmas lunch I came across this absolute gem. Every interaction with the staff from booking to speaking about one of the party with severe allergies was friendly and accommodating. We pre-ordered our food from the November Sunday menu and everything was perfect. 11 clean plates for starters, mains and desserts, what more could you ask for. Great with the two dogs with had with us too! Compliments to the chefs and all the staff

"Our first visit. We cannot praise thank The Wellie highly enough. What a find! Peacefully rural on a quiet road to the south of Baughurst. A classic, pretty country pub, now converted to an excellent restaurant, with three rooms. What strikes you first is how immaculate The Wellie is, inside and out. The large garden is a delight. Masses of dahlias and all manner of bushes and plants. Birds, birds and more birds. Do check out the vegetable garden beyond the rear car park. You then walk inside to the warmest of relaxed welcomes from the owners, Simon and Jason, and manager, Sheila, and their lovely young helpers. Nothing is too much trouble. The first thing you’ll spot is the array of fruit, veg salad for sale by the pub bar – the Wellie Deli. Along with home made jams, chutneys, quiches, etc. I then spotted the two hand pumps! Longdog Golden Poacher Basingstoke Pride. The seating inside is for diners every session is a sell out! But I was very happy to sup several excellent pints of well kept draught Basingstoke Pride in the garden – until I discovered their Negronis! Truly the best this side of Kwant (Piccadilly). We’d opted for the room in the pub: the Apartment. Two rooms on the first floor, knocked through. Enormous comfy bed, large rainfall shower, sofa, mini bar – two TVs! Free milk homemade shortbread. One of the discoveries we made here is the fabulous tea they serve from Prince Sons. As you can tell by now, we were very happy with our first stay at The Wellie… and then we went down for dinner! A truly exceptional menu from Jason’s kitchen, which changes each evening. Highlights were the scallops wrapped in pancetta, the pollack, the lamb pot pie, the twice baked cheese souffle, the NY cheesecake, the rhubarb ice cream, the treacle tart... All so fresh, tasty, and mainly from their garden. What we loved most was it was relaxed but fine dining without the tiny portions. The Full English breakfast the next morning was equally tasty. All in all, we did not want to go home! Thank you Simon, Jason Sheila. We will be back, soon."
