"As we sat under a canopy on a chilly spring evening in London, with heaters working hard, I noticed that the chefs in the open-air kitchen had a fantastic view. I, however, would have liked to enjoy more of the Thames view. Tom's Terrace is a trendy bar and casual dining spot that is sure to attract the after-work crowd in Central London, especially once summer arrives and the sun shines brightly. Until then, I recommend wearing socks to stay warm! There was even talk of providing blankets, a fantastic idea that works well at The Albion rooftop bar in Shoreditch. The menu is a select offering of upscale picnic and BBQ items—simple yet intentionally so, which is unexpected coming from a Michelin-starred chef. Don’t expect anything too extravagant or an outdoor version of Tom's Kitchen in Chelsea; just be prepared for some dishes that are a bit pricey. We started with crispy grissini served with delightful black olive tapenade, guacamole, and hummus (£9). Next came the charcuterie board, a delicious assortment of creamy foie gras parfait, slices of duck breast, chutney, pork rillettes, Bayonne ham, and thick slices of crusty bread (£22). My coronation crab salad (£10.50) was flavorful, albeit rich, featuring a generous helping of crab and mayo topped with toasted almonds over shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, spring onions, and a zesty avocado base. I also tried the steak sandwich (£17.50), which is an open-faced sandwich of sliced steak on toasted chargrilled bread with arugula and a heavy layer of sweet red onion relish—though the relish can be overpowering after a few bites. The phone photos may not do it justice since my camera was hibernating with my sunglasses! The red onion and aubergine tartine (£12.50) was very similar, swapping the steak for aubergine and parmesan. The hot smoked Loch Duart salmon (£17.50) featured a small amount of cold salmon on watercress, accompanied by a herb mustard vinaigrette, served on a wooden board. Unfortunately, it was missing the soft-boiled egg mentioned on the menu, and the price didn’t seem justified given the portion and preparation. My Eton Mess (£8), with blueberries and raspberry coulis, was quite delicious but could have benefited from a better meringue-to-cream ratio. Service was friendly, though there were a few mix-ups with our orders, suggesting they are still ironing out some early-stage issues. The food has its hits and misses and can occasionally be overpriced. The standout dish was indeed the thick-cut truffle chips with parmesan (£6.50). Wine bottles start at around £20, with a decent selection available by the glass at reasonable prices. Cocktails are priced at about £9.50, which is comparable to some of my favorite spots in London like Bob Bob Ricard, so the cocktails at Tom’s Terrace will need to elevate themselves to compete. As someone who enjoys al fresco dining, I must say that plenty of heaters and blankets will be essential to make this comfortable for most nights in London—unless you have the fortitude of an Arctic explorer. I’ve heard that Bill’s Cafe in Brighton provides hot water bottles to customers in the winter; what a brilliant idea! Unless Tom's Terrace adopts similar practices, I suggest bringing your own blanket and warm yourself up with those exceptional truffle chips."

I don't care if it is a bit douchey (cue unts unts unts lounge music), if it is sunny, clear, and summertime and you are visiting London or showing someone around London, check it out. Sommerset House is gorgeous, and where else can you have a beer or glass of wine on a stone terrace overlooking the Thames?

This is the most delightful sunny brunch destination. They excel at farm-to-table dining, offering a delectable seasonal menu alongside classic breakfast favorites. They also serve freshly squeezed juices, which are a fantastic remedy for hangovers. If I lived in London, this would be my go-to brunch spot. The prices were reasonable for the city, and the portion sizes are certainly generous enough to share if you're in the mood for a lighter meal.

However, despite its pleasant ambiance and the iconic setting, I found the atmosphere somewhat lackluster. I’m not a fan of upscale venues where the staff insists that you sit down while they bring you your drinks. It made me feel a bit uneasy, and I honestly would have preferred a more affordable option along the Southbank. Nevertheless, if you enjoy a high-end experience and like feeling pampered with your pricey cocktails, this place may be just right for you.

Very overpriced for ordinary food and tiny amount of it. Would have gone elsewhere. Had to take son to McDonald's after as their chips was not to his taste. Juices was also tiny considering glass filled with ice till the top in December! My son didn't want ice so had to fish it out then was left with just half glass juice! Extremely Disappointing place! Food drink spend 70 for 2! Which is same as if I went to the Shard for a meal and would be so much better views and food! Gosh and it's not tasty, plain ordinary. Visualizza piatti

This is Tom Aikens new place on the terrace of Somerset House. Given the size of the kitchen the menu is short and sweet, limited to snack type foods that are just the sort of thing to soak up a few drinks like dips, burgers and steak sandwiches. There is nothing too challenging here and it is clearly the sort of food that Aikens feels comfortable his chefs can replicate when he is at his Chelsea restaurant and not manning the terrace BBQ. The wine list is equally concise and offers lots of beers, cocktails, white wines and rosés reflecting the summery feel of the whole place. Pics and more details here: [hidden link]

I loved the location, I loved the ambiance. It's outdoors drinks area at the back of Somerset House open only until end of September. They have an OK selection of wine bubbly and would also make a cocktail which isn't necessarily on the list. Price for drinks is pretty standard for London. They have heaters which makes it just that little bit nicer when it is getting late and you're still sipping your drink. My perfect Manhattan was well...perfect! I can't complain. Chicken liver parfait was great. It's a shame they didn't tell us when the kitchen was closing as my friend and I were keen on second helping of that! Definitely check this one out before it closes for winter.

So much about Tom's Terrace is spot on. You can't beat the location, you feel good just walking across the forecourt at Somerset House to then descent on the terrace itself. Unfortunately, i was too late to enjoy the view but can only imagine this to be stunning, too. The place was buzzing with small groups of people meeting for a post-work drink, with just a few tables taken on the foodie side. I joined a group on the lounge side and was impressed by the live drummer accompanying the DJ. Excellent set, albeit a bit loud considering most people had come for a catch-up and a chat. As it is getting a bit chilly as soon as the sun sets on a British late Summer's day, the canope and heaters prov... Visualizza piatti

Very poor experience at Tom's Kitchen on the Somerset House terrace. It would seem that like all venues with a great location, the team feel they don't have to do any work on the food or service. I joined a friend for lunch yesterday. Immediately after I arrived, a waiter tried to take the food order, despite me not having been able to see the menu. I politely asked for more time. They then gave me plenty of time as they then proceeded to ignore us and I had to ask three times to get us waiter to come and take the order. By then, it turned out the Ploughmans lunch was all gone and had to order the burger. The terrace menu seemed incredibly restricted it was either the burger or a weird satsu...

All Pictures at The London Foodie [hidden link] Having spent countless hours jogging, or idling my time drinking or walking along the South Bank, I have been pleased to witness the development of this formerly drab area of London in the last 15 years. The area has much to offer and I was interested to hear that Tom Aikens had set up an open air restaurant on the roof of Somerset House this summer. The restaurant has received quite mixed reviews, and I was intrigued when an invitation arrived from their PR machine to join a bunch of food bloggers for dinner there. Having just been to Tom's Kitchen in Chelsea, I was surprised to see the simplicity of the restaurant menu being offered at the Te...
