"I last reviewed the Red Cow restaurant at the beginning of 2022, when I also gave it an ‘average’ rating – and recently returned for the first time since then. I ordered the ‘Red Cow Burger’, on the menu for £18 and offered with ‘red onion jam, crispy streaky bacon, Emmental cheese, brioche and fries’. The patty tasted less like beef and more like liver – which was a surprise, although the menu description didn’t actually specify the ingredients; so I assumed that it would be beef. I then asked the server which meat was used in the patty, and they replied: “I think it’s beef”. I then told them that it tasted very much like liver to me, so they checked with the chef. After a few minutes, they returned, explaining that the chef was very sorry, but the mince is supplied by a butcher, who ‘sometimes’ adds liver to the mix. This seemed a bit vague. To my chagrin I continued to eat the burger, but wasn’t enjoying it, so gave up after I’d consumed over half of it. I was wondering what other mystery meats the butcher might have thrown-in to ‘enhance’ the flavour and binding properties of the mince (and possibly reduce the cost per weight)? What do you do in this situation? You’re hungry; other people in your party are enjoying their meal, and the menu didn’t specify that the patty included offal – so I felt that I couldn’t send it back and get something else (not that this option was offered by the apologetic server). Before my far from empty plate was cleared, I informed the person who originally took my order that I hadn’t enjoyed what I had eaten of the burger, due to it tasting like liver, and to please let the chef know. They returned, and repeated that the chef was very sorry, but that the mince is supplied by a butcher, who sometimes adds liver to the mix. I thought that at this stage they might offer a dessert, coffee or drink on the house – but they didn’t. The fries were good and the seeded brioche bun was decent, the latter being neither over-soft or too sweet. The servers were courteous, but in my opinion could be better trained in the ingredients of the menu and in customer service. £18 for a beef and liver (and who knows what else) burger and fries is a lot. I didn’t enjoy the experience. The Red Cow should have done better, and it’ll be more than a couple of years before I return there to eat."

"My partner and I had a late valentines treat here after we tried their waffles a few weeks previous. It is a lovely little place with nice decor and the open kitchen with the smell of 00 flour and sourdough baking made me anticipate what was to come. The staff were attentive. Sometimes you can feel rushed but they were quick on their feet, problem solvers and really polite. We shared some pulled pork fries to start which were fantastic. I usually don't go for loaded fries because they are usually soggy but these were crisp with perfectly slow cooked pork to match. Our pizza had a few hurdles getting to us, with the first one catching on the pizza oven and the one being sent out missing a few of our ad ons. They stated they would remake the pizza but we were okay with our pizzsand said they didn't need to remake it. The pizza was absolutely delight. It is light, with complex layer of flavours, a fantastic tomato base and a pizza base that was so good my partner ate the crusts which is something I have never witnessed. The waffles were delicious. The waffles have an incredible rich buttery taste and fab crunch with toppings to match. Simple ,tasty delights to end the meal. When it came time to settle we got a lovely surprise with a free pizza to take home to make up for the issues they had with our pizza. Really sweet and not needed at all for our return business. The table next to us had these amazing looking burgers which we will try next time. Finally, the lindors at the end were a welcome treat as someonenever likes the mints or sweets at the end to be able to have one finally joyful bit"

"Absolute cracker of a place. Stayed here for 2-3 days and was terrific. Service Staff: all brilliant, welcoming, friendly and professional 10 10 Overall environment: bar, restaurant and rooms are all really nicely turned out, well maintained, very clean and comfortable: 10 10 Location Parking: easy to find and close enough to local towns if driving, not suitable if your tied to public transport. It's quiet at night though there's clearly some noise from the bar but that's part of staying at an inn. 9 10 Food: Breakfast is very good indeed, no faffing about with a buffet. English breakfast is about as good as it gets and there are veggie options too, it's well cooked and great quality, they even got some Marmite in for me 11 10 Dinner is also great, would suggest though to stick to dishes like the Beef Hash, that was spectacularly good. Steaks are also good but I think the forte for this kitchen is in local harty food and if you go for these you will feel very happy with your choices. Value for money: accommodation is a 10 10 and food 9.5 10 depending on the dishes, this is a more premium food establishment so it's not cheep BUT it's great quality so it's not expensive either if you choose the right dish options. Overall this place manages to bring together a friendly informal experience with very professional standards in terms of the customer experience, this really is an excellent place to stay."
