"Must admit I was disappointed...been going here over the years and have always loved it. However this time I was in the 'extension ' which is not a patch on the original downstairs space!! Not to self....make sure I book downstairs only! I found it did not have the same vibe and was rather chilly. Secondly, I requested 'medium rare ' and my steak arrived 'well done '....bizarre in a steak restaurant!! So my friend had finished her meal and I ate afterwards on my own....not quite the vibe I was looking for when I booked (however.... we were given the option to send both back so we could eat together...my friends steak was perfect so I think it was too good for her to chance it)... When mine was replaced it was good and the sides were perfect.....just a shame that there were a couple of situations from making it a perfect occasion."

"We have been meaning to try Joseph Benjamin for a while now so finally booked a table with ease online. Had a wonderful meal and felt very well looked after by the lovely ladies serving on Friday night. They were all welcoming and friendly upon entering. The reservation request was accommodated for too. Each person who served was knowledgeable about the wine and the food and able to answer every question put to them promptly and with good explanations and accurate descriptions. The soup and bread with it were both deliciously flavourful, the fish was cooked beautifully although as I sometimes do found the langoustine bisque a little on the salty side. The homemade cranberry sorbet was refreshingly tart I am so glad they did not feel the need to overly sweeten it! My partner hugely enjoyed his starter and the ox cheek fell apart perfectly, however we both agreed the brownie desert was a little on the dry side in the absence of any sauce coulis or cream served instead with a beautiful peanut butter icecream and cindertoffee. They all were great flavours but didn't make it look as appealing or help with the overall texture/lubrication of the dish. For us, what was most appreciated was that when a half full bottle of wine embarrassingly was knocked off the table and no fuss made. Two of the waiting on staff very quickly cleared up the mess, without complaint, comment or looks. Thank you at a make or break moment for saving our anniversary meal accidents can happen but how they are dealt with truly shows the calibre of the service, and your reactions speak highly."

"This used to be our favourite pub in Chester, and we have stayed here twice. However we 've been out of the country and thus not been here since 2019. It is not the same. Went for an evening meal. Beer (brewed on site and admittedly very good was £5.50 per pint which is about £1.20 £1.30 over the odds for this part of the country. Very limited menu with fish and chips at £17.95 (again ridiculous price locally . We had decided to 'suck it up ' (we had booked, after all but then they told they 'd run out of chips! How can a pub run out of chips? Admittedly manager(? was politely apologetic. It 's a city cente pub and was very quiet at 8pm on a Tuesday evening no surprise. A place to be avoided until they improve their menu and drop their prices by 20 30"

"Food: This is our third visit in four weeks. The meat dishes are delicious, but the vegetables, although kept in hotplates, are only warm at best. This is just a personal preference, but I prefer my food hot. Service: The service was excellent, from being seated to interacting with the chef and wait staff, all of whom were pleasant. Atmosphere: Everyone has different preferences, but for us, the restaurant was a bit too noisy. Overall, the dining experience was enjoyable."

"Marco Pierre White is considered one of the finest steakhouses in Chester. The food is of top quality and the menu offers a variety of options. My personal favorite starter was the scotch eggs, which are hard to come by at such a high standard. The chateaubriand steak was exceptional, though it is meant for sharing, so make sure to bring a friend. The only downside preventing Marco Pierre White from receiving a 5-star rating is the prices, which are reflective of the restaurant's high standing in a luxurious hotel. I would highly recommend dining here if you are willing to spend a little extra for excellent food."

"on the drink card it only shows alcoholic drinks that I find angry to be honest. I asked the waiter for non-alcoholic drinks that they were great, but I think they should put all the drinks on the menu they sell. I came to fry with the family. there is a vegan option to fry,' the wellington. no vegan sites. a vegan dessert. the wellington was nice. with the roasts the sweet comes in separate bowls/plates, so we help ourselves instead of coming on the teller. what they brought was not enough for all of us, so we had to ask for more. they brought more and they didn't accuse us either. I think it was little pricy for what you have. there is only a vegan dessert option. on the main menu it seems more vegan options, but it could be even more. it seemed quite loud from the kitchen to scream and the staff was nice, but quite busy. there are quite a lot of stairs here, I notice everyone up or an accessible toilet, maybe I missed them."

"I'm originally from hoole, but in the west country now live the effort to have a few drinks here, if in the breast a very nice place to relax in friendly staff very attentively as the equipment from the outside, they think it's small but once in its kind like the tardis. it can be easy on the expensive side, but this is more than compensated by its service, and for me last, but not least it is dog friendly long it can continue"

"We came to Cheshire on a trip from London and popped to the Cheshire Cat for an evening. The pub has a really nice atmosphere and is really cosy. The pub is well decorated and has comfy chairs which are nicely spaced out between tables. On the first night we just had drinks and were impressed by the really friendly, attentive staff and reasonable prices. They have a lovely selection of gins and tasty beers on tap. We came back for a second night and had a three course dinner and was once again impressed. Lovely hearty food which left us full up and satisfied. The only downside is that we can't have this as our local in London"

"First time we have been to Hickory's in Chester, quality of food was excellent I had the Rump Steak which was the best I have had for a long time, cooked to perfection. The Onion Rings are absolutely massive, but not greasy or full of batter, just right. Hickory's in Rhos-On-Sea next."

"I seldom give 1 star reviews but after visiting the Black Dog on and off for the last 30 years, normally after a bells and whistles' relaunch this place never fails to disappoint. I went there on Sunday 20th March, me, mum, sister,...daughter and step daughter. Hendricks and Tonic one of their highlighted cocktails Cheshire Vibes Hendricks, Cucumber Tonic and swirls of cucumber they had no cucumber and no cucumber tonic. 2 white wine spritzers well I've never seen a spritzer made with white wine and lime juice I thought it looked more line a urine sample than a drink but didn't relise until I saw the itemised bill there was no soda (or even lemonade) but there were 2 splashes of lime juice (yes they charge for a splash of lime juice) Maybe this is Black Dog Cocktail' white wine and lime juice? Blood Mary couldn't taste the vodka, and rather than the standard garnish of a stick of celery it had a spring onion in it! Food roast beef wasn't sure whether I should eat it or take it to a cobbler and ask him to resole my shoe with it. Place was empty (2 other tables occupied) and cold a group of girls walked in and walked out when they saw the very limited menu. There were also walk in customers being turned away food isn't being served? Bizarre. Every thing was slow and wrong even had to push all the empty glasses to the end of the table and ask to have them cleared, the puddings meringue wasn't cooked properly, starters were wrong I could go on. Will I be back of course not but probably yes when it is relaunched in about 3 years time with a bells and whistles' advert in the local rag."

"This restaurant is fantastic. The food and portion sizes were excellent, and the prices were very reasonable for such amazing dishes. We will definitely be returning multiple times. The winter Negroni was like a boozy cherry bakewell in a glass, absolutely delicious. On average, you can expect to spend £20-£30 per person. The food, service, and atmosphere all receive a perfect score of 5. Highly recommended dishes include the Pepperoni Pizza, Meatball, and Fettuccine Alla Carbonara."

"Amazing plant based food. Plant based full English and a chunk of Banana cake for one of us. Lovely and Amazing! Oyster Mushroom and some other mushroom on a slice of sour dough with a basil and garlic drizzle, avocado as a side and the sweet potatoe hash as a side. Totally amazing! All with a carafe of clean cold water for a pound. Staff and customers were amazing. Clean toilet, smells great, Dyson hand dryer, loads of toilet rolls, just in case! Always a good sign when the toilets are clean and tidy. The restaurant has a great ambiance, clean, chairs and little tables outside too. Wow! Sound system was really decent, bass module hidden away somewhere and really highlights the bass tones of the selection, especially the reggae, treble not too high so it was easy to hear each other speak and still listen to the music in the background. Recommended by a friend and well worth the visit and meal."

"first visit last night and we had a brilliant time. the staff is great, very friendly and helpful. I asked if they had a wee they did not serve, and the waiter suggested an alternative that was perfect. my partner has a heavy nut allergy and although we mentioned it on a waitress, it had been clearly communicated among the employees, as another waiter was aware when he talked to us about desserts. our meals were deicious and portion size is good for the price. we will return!"

"We were seated at our table and, after 20 minutes, we were offered drinks while we waited. The menu is extensive with plenty to choose from. My partner ordered the steak, which was cooked to perfection, while I opted for a selection of tapas. They definitely offered more than just a bite! I initially thought the portion sizes would be small, but when the dishes arrived, the servings were very generous. Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. To top it all off, we were served the largest slice of cheesecake I’ve ever had! The service was impeccable, and we felt well taken care of throughout our meal, without being rushed at the end, which was lovely. Thank you for making our anniversary weekend even more special!"

"Lets not get territorial my fellow dwellers of Mancunia. We must unite in golden triangular formation with our Pudlian and Chestonian brethren. Together we really are the best region in the country!!! It is thus without a hint of territorial superiority complex I present to you 1539. Look, fact of the matter is, as much as I LOVE Madchester, I 'm a sucker for a visit to Chester and the Pool. It takes me back to our Roman adventure of a trip at school. I have a soft spot for Chester and all it has to offer in its cute little Roman package. To this day I reserve numerous ganders a year wondering the walls of Chester with friends or family to collate my thoughts or share the peaceful nature of the activity. As I do so, one of the images that hover in mind is that of Chester Racecourse. Being not much of a gambler myself I am oblivious to the excitement of racedays, the restaurant attached however is right up my avenue and it is this restaurant that I finally present to you fellow yelpers on this fine tintin snowy day. If I had a pound for the number of browny points I have gained for taking the lady somewhere different for a candle lit dinner I 'd have decent pocket change for a meal here!! The place ooozes va va voom and the glass-fronted restaurant boasts a panoramic view across the racecourse, which is serene even in the winter. The summery months of July and August are perfectly made for the outdoor decking area offering al fresco dining. While it is contemporary British cooking being served here I don 't for once hold it against them. For while I am more inclined towards other worldly cuisines 1539 does serve up grub to my liking. The spiral staircase to the Ruinart is something that will really impress your dinner guests here, as I 've pleasently found in the past. I 've been told its the oldest Champagne House in the world exclusively producing premium champagne since 1729. While majority of you will find this to be irrelevant, frankly I don 't particularly care much either, however history does intrigue me oh so much as you all know. The roof is bang on for pre/post dinner drinks though I wouldn 't say so at this particular juncture of the year, with us going through a North pole faze in the UK. My recommended course of action would be arrival Sunday mid-morning for a walk around the Chester wall concluding at 1539 doorsteps for a spot of Sunday Lunch. At a rudimentary £25 per couple(2 courses) expect a decent helping indeed. Being an avid fan of the Pomegranate , there is a salad which has plenty of it as a starter as well as pear, pistachio and Pant-Ysgawn goats cheese. Good old fish n chips for the main should be rounded off by a nice Vanilla panna cotta avec fresh berries at which point you 'll be good to go for the 2nd leg of your Chester wall walk to the car. That 's just me though, make your own schedule for your visit to Chester and 1539, you will not regrettez pas! Chamon"

"Having been to the Grovesnor before and enjoyed great service and food I was so disappointed by how far it fell short on this visit when we returned with friends. On arrival there was no one at either desk to great us. The restaurant was barely a third full so no excuse of being busy. I had booked a table weeks previous for dinner to find on arrival the table only half laid. Instead of asking us to wait at the bar and providing a drink while this was rectified, we were ushered to sit down and the table laid around us. The was a poor start to an increasingly disappointing evening. Drinks were then offered. My partner asked to taste the beer that was on offer for the evening and we were all served our drinks. However, AT NO POINT DURING THE EVENING did anyone return to find out if he wanted a full pint or something else. For reasons I will outline below, there was no opportunity to get a drink for the rest of the evening so we all had one drink and he had a thimble full. We ordered starters; again fine and the starters were delicious. However, less than 5 minutes later the mains arrived. I asked the staff to take the mains back to the kitchen as we were still eating but they just stood there….we literally had to push our starters to one side to make space for the dinner plates. This is clearly totally unacceptable. We ate as quickly as we could so the food wouldn’t become cold with nobody checking on us, offering drinks or in fact any input at all. Every other table receives copious attention. I just couldn’t understand it. By now we had been in the restaurant for about and hour with three of us having one drink, one a shot glass worth of beer and a rushed meal. Clearly we wouldn’t be ordering pudding and coffee on this occasion. Their service charge was, eventually, removed from the bill but only after asking just leading to embarrassment all round. It seems the staff were totally oblivious to the woeful service that was provided that evening. I very rarely write negative revises and I am just so disappointed that a lovely evening was ruined and cut short. I’m afraid we won’t be returning."

"The restaurant should consider changing its name since it is not at all "express." The service is slow, and it seems like the manager is doing more work than the waitresses, at least some of them. The drinks took a long time to be served, and the food was slow to come out as well. On the positive side, the food was excellent. Even though the thin crust base was not crispy, it was not doughy. The toppings were flavorful, with a nice touch of spice. The pizzas were large and satisfying, though we had to make do with garlic butter instead of garlic sauce. Our waitress was pleasant and always busy, earning her a well-deserved tip. I would recommend this restaurant as long as you are not in a rush to eat."

"the best place for kebabs and fried chicken. it is close to the university of chester. it is usually overcrowded by students and home delivery orders. love their 2 pieces chicken meal combo. Huhn is beautiful and juicy. also their kebabs are great. they also offer sides. a must."
"The food was delicious. There was 11 or 12 of us so we had quite a few different things and nobody had a bad thing to say about any of their starters,..."
