Bergklause

Bergklause

Eckenerpl. 4, 24159 Kiel, Deutschland, Germany

"the Bergklause, on Schwester-Therese Strasse, in the Kiel village-like suburb of Holtenau, is the answer to many a dream. Well-cooked basic food served at the comfort of a candle-lit table decorated with fresh flowers, but without any of the pomp associated with many more expensive restaurants. For years, this restaurant close to the marina on the northern bank of the Kiel Canal, where it joins the Kiel Sound near the Baltic coast, has served many of its maritime visitors and would-be sailors with hugely ample portions of steak (cooked to perfection), schnitzel to cover your plate, and a selection of chips (French fries), bratkartoffeln (fried potatoes), and accompanying vegetables such as green beans, onions and pickles. Choose from an extensive menu but please note that portions are always - and without exception - massive. There is a passable dry red house wine, but you will probably enjoy a good glass of the German cool and satisfying beer with your meal. Waiting times vary, but you can wait in comfort at your table, where you will be either left in peace or approached by one of the colourful local characters who pop in for the conversation or a swift beer. The "patron" is talkative, but has little English. No matter - you are guaranteed a warm welcome. Finally prices: expect to pay between 20 and 30 Euros per person, inclusive of a beer or two. Particularly recommended is a Friday evening, from 7 pm until late. Guten Appetit!"

"We had arranged a meeting with a friendly couple who had proposed to meet this restaurant. At 6:00 p.m. we entered the restaurant and came right behind the door into a group of waiting people – what are they waiting for? The tables visible from this point of view were occupied at most by 20, and we couldn't see our friends from there either. From the staff of the house there was no greeting, the dominations were with me not knowing what was occupied and took no note from the waiters. After a short waiting period, Madame took the initiative, pushed through the waiters and went to the corner of the L-shaped guest room. Right after, she waved me, she had discovered our friends. We then went to the rear and then took place after due greeting at the four table. Shortly afterwards, one of the young waiters, who were all friendly and accommodating, but had hardly any gastronomic training, came to the table and distributed the menus. The offer includes “authentic dishes and modern interpretations of the centuries-old traditional Thai cuisine”. The menu is shown on the homepage only in extracts, here [here link] there is detailed information about the Curries. The current price quote on the homepage from €13.50 does not match the map in the local area, where the curries read: Vegetarian €14.50, chicken €15.90 with duck €17.70 and shrimp €16.50. At least the basic price for the vegetarian variant and also those with chicken meat seem quite sporty to me for Kiel conditions, and the comparison with the Toh Thong in Frankfurt a few days ago is quite clear: There the basic vegetarian variant of most dishes costs 8.50 €, with chicken 9.00 €. While we were still studying the cards, another waiter came to the table and accepted the beverage orders: Our friends ordered cocktails beforehand and then a tiger beer each. Madame ordered a mineral water 0.2l for €2.40 as usual. I wanted to order a large Cola light, but was informed that soft drinks are only available in small bottles. After a short time, the waiter came back to the table, served the cocktails and put a glass with ice and half a lemon slice at Madame and at me, which he then filled out bottles opened at the table. Then we had finally chosen the food, our friend ordered once roasted rice and once “Ped Pad Priew Wan”, “Gemüse sweet-sauer mit crispy duck” €17.90 . Madame had liked fruit and ordered “Gäng Phet Ped Yang”, “Sautierte duck in curry with fruit” €17.90. In the now following waiting period, the local was filled, it went so far that the twoer tables that had previously been compiled to four groups were pulled apart in the row next to ours. This is good to create more space for couples, which then resulted in a very narrow passage between the tables. The most striking thing about the establishment of the restaurant are the wall coverings and partly also ceiling coverings made of peeled branches. The tables with bare resopal plates are combined with upholstered chairs with red or sand-colored covers, some wall lamps create a quite cozy light. The house makes a clean and well-maintained impression, in this respect I noticed nothing negative. After a reasonable waiting period, one of the waiters first brought the plates for our friends and then disappeared before our friend could express his blurry: instead of roasted rice, which usually looks quite dry, one of the curry dishes found themselves with the typical large amount of sauces on the plate. When our plates were served in the second gear, our friend complained about the confusion, the waiter then took the plate back. Actually, there were no plates placed in front of us, but rather bowls. Madame got a light gray-brown ceramic with the usual large amount of liquid, in which duck meat, various pieces of vegetables and a lychee and some grapes lay. The whole was crowned by some leaves of Thai-Basilikium and a foam that tasted nothing. In this respect, the court was quite accurate to the description on the homepage. However, it was not a revelation, the usual coconut milk flavor with the sweetness of the fruits. From the sharpness threatened in the map with the symbol of a chilishote there was practically nothing to feel. My bowl had a full anthracite shade, the crispy fried ducks and the green and red vegetables contrasted wonderfully here. The deep green of the fried Thai basilikum also fits visually very well. Only under the layer on meat and vegetables I found the noodles, narrow band noodles with still weak bite. The meat was excellently cooked, with crispy crust and very delicate inside, with well seasoned. The vegetables were as expected fresh and crisp, the fried basil cracked while chewing. The sauce is well tasted and actually a bit sharp, but not as long ago as the two chilischote symbols were expected. Only a few grapes of green peppercorns increased the sharpness pointwise. However, the composition was very good, I would order the court again. In the meantime, the waiter had brought our friend the right food after a few minutes, so that we were all satisfied and satisfied. Then the drama started with the payment. The so-called waiter had already heard that two groups had to be taken off. He took his digital helper and took off what our friends told us. The result of his addition was then paid by card. Then we counted our consumption, and then the two tiger beers still remained on the electronic list, but our friends were loud and clear and not only once mentioned... It took a good ten minutes until the waiter had blurred this mess. In total we spent over three hours in the restaurant, during this time other tables in the area were reoccupied twice and when we finally left the restaurant, there were still guests waiting for a free table in the entrance. In the four years of its existence, this restaurant has developed a “Look, I am” status, probably also because the other Thai restaurants in Kiel are much further away from the city centre. The price-performance ratio must be judged by everyone for themselves, for us it is not so true."

"The snack does not look very welcoming from the outside. However, the rich selection of Chinese and Thai dishes convinces the quality of food (both Thai and Chinese dishes have tasteful restaurant quality) and the really very friendly service. Prices range from 6-9€ for main courses, appetizers and desserts, from 1.50€ to 4€; so everything is very affordable. The food can be either eaten on site or picked up or ordered via its own delivery service. If you want to eat your food right in the shop, there are several tables to choose from. Since there is no spatial separation between stove and dining area, food odours are not excluded in clothing. But you are served quickly in the square. The order with functionless functions, between the acceptance of order and the fresh preparation of the court in wok are rarely more than 10 minutes. Also the delivery service is efficient, the food is delivered quickly and hot. Payment on the front door must be cash, the card payment is not possible. I was served fair and friendly every time with my orders. Two small comments at the end: The portions are very large, often I couldn't eat a dish. In order to avoid unnecessary food waste, the portion size should therefore be agreed with the operation. The menu should also like to have some vegetarian dishes more, but the dishes dominate with meat. So who is looking for a somewhat spleny place with convincing dishes, services and prices is here!"
