"My wife and I visited this lovely clean Inn for my birthday treat organised by my daughter and Lynn the manager. The table was booked for 6.30.On arriving it was very quiet but of course it was quite early evening. The lady behind the bar gave us a lovely greeting served us drinks and the gave us the option of seating, as it was quite a cold evening we chose to sit near the wood burning fire. We indicated that we were ready to order, Lynn presented us with the menu and we both selected the Lamb trio. Lamb fritter, a miniture pan of shepards pie and lamb joint. We didn't have to wait very long before the food arrived my goodness the plate looked delightful, complete with 2 large pieces of lamb joint carrots, green beans and luscious gravy. I have to say that this was one of the finest meals I have had the pleasure of eating in many years. The lamb was cooked to perfection and slightly pink, the shepherds pie tasted beautiful and even a simple fritter tasted very special. In addition to having a fabulous meal perfectly cooked the Manager Lynn could not have been more helpful, checking to see if everything was ok, a real professional in the true meaning of the word. We live in Derby about 40 minutes away but I would definately make my way to the Fox Goose should we be in that area. Highly recommended. A big thank you to Lynn for helping my daughter to arrange this surprise and to the chef for making my birthday surprise lovely."

"This is the first and possibly the last visit to mint leaf. We have read and heard of great reviews about this place and I for one was disappointed. Giving the benefit of doubt first, it was New Year’s Eve so I totally understand the...demand of service to customers however, and it is a big however. I called to book a table a few days before and they made it sound like it was full. They game me options to book in so I took the later one. I left my name so we knew it was a concrete booking. On arrival, no name was asked by the doorman, he just shoved us on the waiting sofa starring at people eating food which felt uncomfortable anyway. We then got taken to our table (and there was plenty of room too) shortly followed by another couple who took the next table. We had a look at the menus when, a regular couple came in and sat tables down, only to get served instantly. Regardless of importance and how much you spend in the vicinity, we should have been first. So, we ordered popadoms to share with pickle tray and they wasn’t even warm. They tasted like rubber and they had been stood for some time. The pickle tray was awful, like it had been slopped together. We had to be asked to get a drink which was awkward. Onto the starters, the tandoori chicken actually was really nice, came on a small plate with small tomato and some discoloured lettuce. It wasn’t served on a skewer either. My partners allo chop was cold. It took minutes for the mains to arrive and we hadn’t even had our starters taken away either so the table was a mess. The waiter was arrogant and slammed the plates onto the table shouting “enjoy your meals happy new year” in the most sarcastic voice too. Overall, a very disappointing evening when we was looking forward to it too. We never got looked after once and asked if we need anymore drinks etc. i must say though, we have eaten at Ayeshas on Dronfield bottom and they actually blow mint leaf away. So, we won’t come back I’m afraid. Ohh, give the toilets a clean they were awful. for me guys."

"Living locally we 've been coming here for years but hadn 't visited for some time. This was partly due to Covid but also because after the previous owners retired the food especially went down a pretty steep hill. Thinking we 'd pop back to see if things had picked up it 's a shame to report that the pub is no longer what it was. Now owned by the Titanic brewery there is no longer the wide array of excellent Ashover beer that was once brewed here alongside the other regular and excellent Oakham ales that used to be on tap. Our meal was disappointing. The vegan lasagne ordered by my wife was off so she opted for the beef. On it 's arrival we weren 't sure whether it was a lasagne or some kind of cottage pie. There appeared to be no pasta in it. It was the strangest lasagne I 'd seen an odd, glutenous, amorphous and tasteless mush. The waitress peered into it Basil Fawlty like and then took it to the kitchen only to return and tell us that there was indeed pasta in there but that it 's vegan pasta ?? She said a fresh one would be sent. The barmaid then abruptly decided to inform us that the chap on the table next to us had the lasagne and there was nothing wrong with it. Inappropriate and quite rude really. A new lasagne arrived. Fragments of pasta were located but I think the issues was that it was previously frozen and now reheated or simply had been warmed through too many times and was now just a mess. My wife ate half of it as she was hungry. I had the steak and ale pie and wolfed it down as I was starving. The pie was nice and meaty but had not been cooked sufficiently and the inside of the pastry was undercooked and slimy. Chips were greasy. As we sat finishing our drinks we were alarmed to see the chef appear at the bar with his bum hanging out the back of his tracksuit bottoms leaving us with concerns re food hygiene and safety in the kitchen. We left swiftly and won 't be back. It 's a shame a pint of Oakham Citra by the fire and a nice meal used to be a lovely treat here but no more. The Black Swan up the road gets great reviews and will be our next port of call!"
