"Dinner on a sunny Thursday evening in August. My dinner companion had been delayed by an accident so had to take a detour. I decided that on such a lovely warm evening I 'd get a beer and wait outside on the terrace in the lovely sunshine. The bar was cozy country pub and the two young ladies behind the bar cheerful to the point of effervescent. The cask was Tim Taylor 's Knowle Spring the young lady who served me apologised that it was a blonde ale, no need to do so, on an evening like that it was what I was looking for. A good pint, really enjoyable in the evening sunshine. When my companion arrived I revisited the bar to get her a drink and pick up some menus. I was again met by a lot of enthusiasm from a young staff who offered to bring the drink out. We ordered our meal and opted to eat in the dining room. From the complimentary bread to the coffee after the dessert, the service of the young staff, the taste and presentation of each dish were excellent. The only criticism was that the staff who were excellent were let down by management. I say this because at their age you haven 't had time to pick up all the little jobs when you work behind the bar and serve at table something which came to light when I asked for another pint. The barrel had come to an end and there was no one around who could change the barrel. The young lady was most apologetic but hardly her fault. About 15 minutes later as we ate our meal she reappeared, a barrel changer had arrived and she could now get me a Tim Taylor 's Landlord. It was excellent. We agreed that we had thoroughly enjoyed our meal as we left and would be back again. An excellent crew that evening had made it very enjoyable. Come on management give these young ladies the support they richly deserve."

"I have not been to The Bell for several years and a friend had recently been so we decided to go. The welcome was excellent, the lads behind the bar, who also served the meal were attentive and polite. I feel that the female host could have interacted a little more, though I appreciate they were busy. We were sat at a table in the bar initially and though our table was ready, we were not called up to it until after the reservation time, and it took a while to take our order. Having said that, after we ordered the food came fairly swiftly. I can’t criticise the quality of the food; it was well cooked, hot and tasty. It was expensive for “pub grub” but it wasn’t your normal pub grub, the quality was that of a good restaurant. The chef came out to talk to us, yes he was sweating a little; it was a warm and muggy evening and he was working in a hot kitchen. He asked us if our meal was alright and we had a short conversation together. Having looked on the website prior to visiting, I was aware of the cost, so there was no surprise. If I was going to criticise anything, I personally like real ale, but I don’t like Timothy Taylor beers, and that is all the had. There are a number of local breweries who make excellent ales and maybe The Bell should support them. All in all a good evening and I would definitely go back, providing my table wasn’t by the door to the kitchen!"

"We return here each time in the hope that things improve. Unfortunately nothing does!! The bike cafe has been ‘temporarily’ housed under a fixed marquee , which joins on to an open, large room for about 18m now. Fully equipped and to all intents and purposes, permanent. The food is good, but the service is deplorable. The system seems to be that only designated people take the order, or should I say designated person. I’ve never seen more than one. The waiting staff who can’t take orders, consists mostly of young people hanging around chatting. No one has any sense of urgency or duty. I was watching behind the counter after our order had been taken. About 5/6 people were behind the counter, drinking coffee or water and eating. They were chatting about where they were going that evening. One guy was making coffee. Two coffees went out the back, to staff presumably, and after what seemed ages, our coffee was done. By now, all the staff had disappeared. Then a guy appeared took the coffees but didn’t know which table they were for. Our food appeared, (she didn’t know which table they were for either). I had the jumbo hot dog which was, without exaggeration, the most charred sausage I’ve ever seen. I said I couldn’t eat it and the girl quickly offered to replace it. BUT WHO ON EARTH THOUGH THAT IT WOULD BE OK TO SERVE IT? I’ve no idea who, if anyone is in charge in this cafe, a young girl did go and sit with her lap top, looking officious, next to colleague who was eating his brought in lunch, but she didn’t appear to have any authority or awareness of the appalling service. We have had this experience a number of times (minus the charred sausage) but nothing seems to change. Doddington are missing a trick here as although not heaving, it was busy. I do hope they don’t blame the temporary situation as that’s no excuse. There are plenty of staff and there is plenty of good food. Buck your ideas up!!"

"We booked for dinner for 4 adults and 2 toddlers, and were told we could be ‘squeezed in’ at 5:45pm. When we arrived we requested 2 high chairs for our 11 month old and 2 year old daughters, to which we were told they only had one, and one was ‘buried under things’. We politely asked if the second could be collected, to which we were told ‘No. If you would have told us about the ages, we could have organised this for you’. We had booked ‘4 adults and 2 toddlers’... We were seated under a window, where the sun was streaming in (so much so the table opposite had sunglasses on . We asked our waitress if she could close the blinds a little, to which she explained ‘I’ve already asked him, and he said no’. Presumably referring to the friendly man we’d already encountered. We ordered at 6:05pm. My husband then drove back home to collect a high chair for us to use. By 7pm we still didn’t have any food. We asked the waitress who told us it was ‘just coming’. By 7:20pm still no food, apology or update. We asked again, being told ‘5 more minutes’, as we saw the chef wondering around the bar chatting. We spoke to the lady (in charge? behind the bar, who told us they had had a lot of walk ins. We were one of 3 tables (2nd to arrive in the restaurant so knew this wasn’t true. The food finally arrived at 7:30pm. The food was adequate. By this time we were ravenous and keen to get the babies home, so almost anything would have sufficed. We were after something quick, easy and wholesome. The food was fine, however the 1.5hr wait for scampi and chips was not. Good, or at least, friendly, customer service may have saved this, however they failed here too. The website claims to offer a ‘friendly and personal experience’; I suggest the website be updated. I certainly wouldn’t recommend."
