"I like to try different cafes and coffee shops in town when I have to go in, so I took the trouble to seek out Café Zest having seen the name on an advert on the back of a bus ticket. This in store café concession, which is owned by an Italian family named Massarella, is hidden away right at the front of the first floor of Howells store. There’s little or no signage to help you find it. That’s probably why it was almost empty. But having found it, great, just fancied a larger cup of coffee to pass some time, so ordered a large latte. Bad mistake. If you order a large latte, most places put in two shots of espresso, and in some places you even get three. But it seems not in Massarella Catering Group Zest Cafés. One puny shot of weak nasty coffee, so you basically get a mug of light brownish milk with a bit of a bitter edge. The lady behind the counter was really nice and even put another shot free of charge into a separate little cup – and that’s how it was possible to tell just how thin, weak and nasty the coffee in Zest is. Even with the second shot of weak see through coffee poured in, the latte was to my mind undrinkable. I was more than happy to put it down to experience and just go but the very pleasant understanding manager was insistent on giving a refund. Didn’t buy any food so who knows, it may be good. But I’ll never find out because this is not a place I’d come back to. Based on the poor coffee served in Zest, we’ll probably try and avoid all other Massarella Catering in store café brands (Angelica’s, Botanico and Wild Mint) as well in future. Such a shame really because coffee in Italian owned cafes is usually very good."

Cafe Zest is pleasant enough and the snacks tasty. The staff have always been friendly. It could do with a bit of a revamp though as the menu has been the same for years.

Place was cold as was the whole store, had to wait for girl to serve and then servile. Coffee not tasty and latte was cold. Give this place a miss. Better conversion to boutique hotel.

We stopped here for coffee while shopping in cardiff. A delicious caramel latte and their cakes are amazing!! My fussy partner liked his hot chocolate too saying it was one of the best

The service here was friendly and the eggs for the 5 item breakfast were made to order, which I found better than when they are usually left under the heat lamps to dry out in other cafes! Visualizza piatti

I popped in for a quick lunch and found plenty of seating available. I enjoyed a delicious soup and roll at a very reasonable price. The menu is limited, mainly offering snacks, but the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful.

Long wait for Disappointment. Waited ages to find out they had no hot cross buns prior to Bank holiday Easter. Coffee could have been a lot hotter. I won't be rushing back, SORRY. Not only me but others waiting were not impressed.

During our visit to Cardiff, we stumbled upon Cafe Zest and enjoyed a delightful brunch. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, and the food selection was not only fantastic but also tasty and reasonably priced. It was a very enjoyable stop. Visualizza piatti

I stopped by Cafe Zest on Saturday afternoon for a coffee and some lunch. I usually don't find the service impressive at shops and cafes, but credit must be given where it's due. I want to say a big thank you and well done to Grace (I even took note of her ID badge!) for her exceptional customer service. She was engaging, polite, and attentive, making me feel valued as a customer. My coffee and ham and cheese croissant were delicious as well.

I’d like to say something nice about Cafe Zest, but I’m struggling to do so. First of all, Lipstick on my glass. Not replaced, despite an apology, I then had to drink from the bottle. My tomato and basil soup was tasty enough, but warm at the best, not hot. There were no home made croutons as advertised, neither was there a fresh roll, as per the menu. Nobody mentioned it. My toasty was nice but accompanied simply by brown edged lettuce, looking as though it was far from fresh. My partner had a coffee and jacket potato which he said was ok, nothing special. The total bill £19 but I’d had a 20% discount voucher sadly this had been overlooked and was not deducted. I pointed it out to staff who...

"It was the most bizarre experience dining here. First when we arrived in the restaurant, our group set up was that there was someone on each end who was sitting facing an empty chair on the other side of the table. Upon enquiry we understood it was a covid measure, however never had any other restaurants requesting such seating arrangements in the past 20 months. We ordered two split pots, a non-spicy broth for one side of the pot and a spicy broth for the other side. The staff came to confirm that we wanted spicy/non-spicy in each pot. Yes, we said. To our shock when the pots came, one pot was spicy/spicy on both side, and the other was non-spicy/non-spicy on both sides. This was after the staff had came by to confirm that we wanted a spicy/non-spicy set-up, and in the usual situation a person wanting a spicy broth would not have asked for a split pot. We raised this to the staff and were clearly unhappy about it, though did not insist on having the broths changed around. What happened next made it the most awkward and uncomfortable dining experience ever. From where we were sitting, we could hear the owner reprimanding the staff for the error, throughout our meal. We understand mistakes occur and if the owner was unhappy about the mistake and genuinely wanted to apologise, taking the initiative to change the broth to the right setup, or a complimentary drink or dish would have gone a long way. But no, he chose to reprimand the staff within our hearing for the whole dinner (which didn't help the situation one bit and made the experience worse! . We felt sorry for the staff. Even with the hospitality shortage, that was a completely wrong way to help the staff improve, nor help retain them in the long run. I don't remember anything about the food, although photos did show a good range to choose from. At the end of the meal we each received a box of hello panda, which might have helped, if not for the fact they were expired. All in all, would not recommend."
