"Roni and I went here for a quick drink and ended up going back for most of our holiday. First of all the pub is as friendly to dogs as they are to us. Our wee man had a bit of a pant on and was served with a cold bowl of water and dog treats. As Roni is disabled we have to be careful where we go, but the landlady and staff could not have been more helpful. We ordered our drinks and asked for the menu. Roni had forgotten her glasses and yet again help was at hand with a box of reading glasses from behind the bar. The wine is of a very high quality and the beer is beautifully kept. Our food arrived very quickly, all home cooked and piping hot. All of our food was to the highest standard with beautiful ingredients. We were so impressed we were back the next day for our meal. Steak and Kidney pie was fantastic full to the brim with meat and the chilli Roni had was of the same amazing standard. This is a fantastic pub with great people and staff, if it was where we lived it would be our local make no mistake. Thank you very much for your hospitality."

The food is not very good quality in my opinion. Done on the cheap. We won't be going back there in a hurry.

Ancient pub with lots of atmosphere and history. Good service and great food. Outside is a lovely orchard walk down to the river.

We had a fantastic dinner on Tuesday evening. The restaurant was bustling and we didn't have a reservation, but we were warmly welcomed. The restaurant is also very accommodating to dog owners.

Phoned ahead to reserve a table. Lovely old pub. Friendly welcome. Doggy friendly, made a fuss of our two big dogs. Food was nice. Good choice of gf dishes. We were staying at the Higherwell campsite. Nice 15 minute walk into the village.

I went with two old friends before watching a football match between Stoke Gabriel and Newton Abbott. This charming historic pub dates back to 1152. The Dartmoor Jail Ale was in excellent condition. The menu offered a variety of bar meals to suit every taste. The bar staff and locals were very friendly. If you are ever in the area, make sure to stop by - you won't be disappointed. We were staying very close to The Church House Inn which was really lucky! Great place to eat and socialise. The staff were all really friendly, the food was very good and plentiful. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a nice, social night out without loud music. It’s so popular, you would be well advised to book a table early as it gets busy every night in our experience, especially between 6pm and 8pm.

This traditional country pub offers a warm welcome and is full of character and charm. They serve well-kept ale and a good selection of other drinks. The food is good, honest, hearty grub with generous portions. I enjoyed a homemade lasagne with chips, carrots, and peas, while my companion had gammon, egg, and chips with peas. The plates were emptied, which is a testament to the delicious taste. The bar staff and cook were all welcoming and I can't fault the experience. I will definitely be returning.

"The positive is that the food is good. But the negative is the service time and the attitude of the staff. We were seated and had our order taken after 20 minutes. A little slow but it was a busy Saturday evening so understandable. Starters came promptly and were eaten. We then got ignored by every passing member of staff for at least 50 minutes. Quite the skill! Once there was a break in our conversation and I realised how long it had been, I stood up to intercept a waitress and asked “are our mains on the way, please?” Our ticket was checked by her at the kitchen hatch and we were told “yes”. At this point our starter plates were cleared after they had sat on the table for at least 35 minutes. Our mains then took another 25 minutes to get to us, so I suspect that being told they were on their way was a lie. To be clear: we were given our mains 1hr 20 mins after placing our order. I complained to a waitress who sent over a manager. The manager asked if we’d had starters (yes, we had) and said that it was our fault our main was so late as we’d had a first course. How insulting!!! Blaming the customer for their bad service. Disgusting. When I said it was still far too long to wait between courses she then changed tack and said the kitchen was “really really busy” well, they weren’t busy cooking our food now were they?! And despite the place being full when we arrived, by this point of the night over half the tables were empty. There were 3 tickets on the pass along with ours and tables were 2 4 people (no large groups) so I feel that was also another lie to get out of it. What a shocking way to treat customers! My advice to you is: if you want your food served in a timely manner, either take the advice of the manager and don’t order a starter, or, be sure to communicate with waitstaff once your first course is finished and ask for your main to be cooked and served promptly. (Note: food also sat under the heat lamps for long lengths of time as staff stood socialising with one another behind the bar rather than serve customers) I hope this advice is of use as I would have appreciated it ahead of my visit! Good luck. [Reading other reviews, ours is not the only experience of slow service and seeing staff chat to one another rather than deal with the customers paying their wages.
