"After sampling quite a number of establishments along this long stretch of road in Essen, we decided we wanted to try somewhere that had a menu that was more "comfort" and although, Luck in a Cup does have a small but quite disparate menu, it's tagline of "soul food" is certainly right. My view of soul food or comfort food is that the dish is always something you can go back to in order to make everything right. Therefore, it is best to do things simple and well. I got the burger and it was done to perfection with some straightforward leafage inside and plenty of burger sauce. Accompanied with some lightly battered sweet potato chips and it was just something to take my mind away from the particularly bad sore throat that I was having at the time(!) My wife went for the chicken curry noodles and that was also just done right. As a starter, we both had summer rolls and again, it was all just comforting. We finished with a cappuccino and some mint tea just to soothe the digestion of the plentiful menu. There was only a slight blip where it took quite a while for the kitchen to get our foods at a prompt time, but I think it might have been that we saw the only cook working his socks off to get all the orders sorted as quickly as he could. We did get another round of complimentary drinks courtesy of our waiter who was also extremely pleasant, and interestingly, the only person whom I think who actually asked us about how our meal was going out of all the other times we went out. I would definitely recommend this place."

Unexpected good food, pleasant ambience, very friendly staff. Would recommend the Tom Kha Gai soup, and the chicken Cupsalad ! Also, perfectly matched capuccino at the end :-)

beautiful Asian cuisine with a smoother European taste. kürbis veggie suppe is amazing and I also loved lachs teryaki. beautiful personal and simple location. super recommended!

Went here for dinner and food was very tasty. Outstanding service!!! My friend didn't speak German and the waiter (probably owner) helped him translate the menu and gave us recommendations. Stylish little restaurant (bit loud but that is typical in Rüttenscheid's restaurants). Great beer. Will definetely come back soon!

We walked in by mere chance, driving by looking for a quick bite to eat for lunch. And we were thrilled, especially by the tasty and plentiful soups. The ambiance is cool and trendy, but not over the top. And the fridge where the beverages are kept is a terrific antique, the restaurateur went all the way to an Austrian village butcher to acquire it. We are sure to come back on our next trip to Essen.

I did not even get to try the food. Even before ordering the waiter was very rude to us. The music was very loud and they were playing some techno music which as not appropiate for a saturday lunch and when only few people were there. We tried to communicate in our best German just asking politely if they could offer another kind of music. Then the waiter complained very rudely saying "improve your German, you spanish". Then we left. This is not the appropiate way to treat customers.

Well, as all previous reviews for Luck in a cup are in German, I’ll write this review in English for the non-German speaking audience :) The restaurant serves „soul food“ which means: asian food (thai curries mixed with couscous or Vietnamese summer rolls), burgers, meaty dishes and bits of pasta and salads. The restaurant is not big, but cozy with its own style (of comic figure Tintin, teenage quotes and a vintage fridge).
