"I recently booked a table at this restaurant for a party of 20 people on a Friday evening. When I phoned to book I spoke to Melissa who was extremely helpful in arranging everything we required. She gave us a back room and was able to seat all 20 of us on a U shaped table which was perfect. On arrival we were looked after by Nicola her team in the most friendly and efficient manner imaginable. They were able to serve all of us almost simultaneously and everybody got exactly what they ordered. It was piping hot, extremely tasty and well presented and with generous portions. The ambiance of the restaurant was lovely, as was the food and the service. Prices were also very reasonable, particularly given the quality of the food. We all agreed without exception that we would happily go there again, as there were many tempting options on the menu to choose from. Thank you Shakesby’s and your wonderful team for a perfect evening."

"Every time we visit Horncastle, we always end up at this restaurant. However, the quality of the food and service has become so inconsistent that it's time to try out other dining options. During our most recent visit, we arrived half an hour before closing time and ordered poached eggs on toast. It was not a good sign when the waitress audibly sighed upon taking our order. The eggs were served in a lackluster manner, floating in a pool of vinegar water with runny yolks, accompanied by soggy, cheap Sunblest white bread on the side. The rushed service continued as the waitress, noticing my wife browsing the gifts upstairs, inquired about her whereabouts before checking the time on her watch. While the chef has always been reserved, the food and service used to make up for it. Unfortunately, it now only qualifies as 'good in parts'."

"Booked stayed at this place very recently having read the excellent reviews. As a very level headed person, certainly not delusional I failed in trying to recognise or match the place based on any of the reviews posted on Booking.com The place, whilst very quaint appealing from the outside is in direct contrast to the inside! In reality, it 's very much in dire need of deep cleaning, redecorating and refurbishing. The food, not sure who prepared the meals in the reviews I read, but fail to see how it could be the same chef as the one that cooked ours! Our meals arrived no less than 40 minutes after ordering. The drinks to occupy us while we waited never did arrive when our meals finally arrived served (if slapping on the table warrants being called served three out of the five items that made up the meal were uncooked, cold unedible! The excuse given by the waitress, is far too busy and understaffed, yet despite not being able to fulfil the job paid for, they still take fee paying guests who are treated far less than second class citizens to the regular clientele supping at the bar! Far too busy but not enough to stop them from taking longer than necessary to laugh talking to the regulars! Needless to say, we ate at other places for the rest of our stay. DO NOT BE FOOLED, as we were by the reviews, which have stayed are extremely questionable indeed! If one is used to using hostels I can see this could be deemed as good, if not excellent accommodation. On the flip side, if one is used to hotels that are clean customer focused then this hotel (a grand name for nothing more than a public house with accommodation not a very good or pleasant one at that is not the one for you!!"

"One simple word describes this restaurant perfect! From the moment we arrived we received a lovely warm welcome, attentive but not overbearing service and a comfortable relaxed setting. The food is outstanding, and a Michelin star would not be out of place here. Delicious amuse bouche accompanied our aperitif and they set the tone for the rest of the meal. The main course of halibut was simply a stunning piece of cooking with every single element cooked to perfection and complimenting each other, clearly a sign that the chef knows how to bring a dish together without over complicating and confusing the flavours. The desserts were another delight, with the apple crumble souffle a very clever designed and executed piece of high end cuisine. If there is a better restaurant in Lincolnshire then I will eat my hat just as long as it's cooked by this chef! We wish Magpies Restaurant continuing and much deserved success, and we can't wait to re visit soon."
