"My daughter and I had such a great lunch at Matsumi (the midday menu is more limited than in the evening) that we requested a table for four on Saturday night and were accommodated, even though the restaurant was fully booked. In terms of seating there is a sushi bar and tables for two or four (I'm not sure if there are also private rooms). The entrance on the street is relatively small so look out for it on your first visit, and you then wend your way up a few stairs to reach the oldest Japanese restaurant in Hamburg (established 1981) with the reassuring sight of both oriental and occidental diners. Menus are available in English as well as in German. The fresh seafood, which covers all the usual suspects, is supplied by Hummer Pedersen and some of it is outstanding, especially when it has less 'air miles' (eg. the local herring was top notch as were the sweet prawns whilst the Chilean uni was a little less so). Staples such as miso soup, edamame and pickles are right on the money, the unagi is nicely prepared, and the agadashi tofu is excellent. The wakame was not quite as exciting since almost half the dish was cucumber. You may have to wait a short while for sushi and sashimi items if there's a busy service but it's worth it. There's a range of beers (draft takes longer than bottled as it gets a head German style), good green tea and a nice selection of sake. All in all, if you'd like a change from more traditional north German food Matsumi is a great place to go - the service is friendly and efficient, the food is tasty and different, and there's a nice, cosy atmosphere."

in typical Japanese environment you can eat fantastic. it is really very authentic, of excellent quality is eating, very varied, absolutely fresh and prepared on the spot. a very attentive staff. the bar places allow the artists who prepare the sushis to look exactly at the fingers.

the oldest Japanese restaurant in hamburg. it is old, from a reason, from the praises only one note to the peculiarities the currency in 1982 is not the same and the inflation is also not the same. quality was good, but not worth the extreme price tag.... what can I say we have just gone for a doner kebab. another note, which is not true with the personal. is it normal to judge customers on their faces?! how insulting! where are they coming to treat such costumes. never again! I had a very nice evening or a very nice culinary short trip in matsumi. Eating is truly authentic, traditional, tasty and lovingly prepared. it reminded me of my 2.5 week holiday in japan: the menu and the small menu are very diverse. everyone would find many delicious things. but since I couldn't try everything, I would like to spend at least 5 7 nights there to try everything. above all. I would like to reserve a place in the sushi bar at the next visit in matsumi. I think you'll be pampered with the Sushi master and you could admire his craft. thanks to Mattsumi team and by soon!

I got food poisoning there. because we were there with a little child, we were taken to the kitchen. it was loud and hectic. other guests were very loud. against the end of our 6 course menu we were no longer served. drinks were no longer brought, the ordered tee never arrived and the child car would have to be put on the toilets. everything was old and worn out. Nothing has been done since the 80s. the toilets only conditionally clean. we had to end our journey earlier and drive home because of my health condition. that eats for all who have eaten genuinely Japanese or Japanese, nothing special. the sections are very small. drinks cost, whether domestic or imported the 4 cache. I wish I had...

"There's always a question (in my mind, anyway) as to Michelin's accuracy/usefulness outside of France. In the US, it's not very helpful at all and in Europe ex-France, I've found it hit and miss. Haerlin represented only my second stab at a two-star in Germany and the first meal (Heinz Winkler), while a thoroughly wonderful overall experience, felt like the second star might have been a stretch. Not so at Haerlin, this was a two-star meal that stands fork-to-fork with any I can remember. The food is stylized to within an inch of its life, but close to flawless in both conception and execution. Outside of a large selection of generally unremarkable breads and a luke-warm roasted onion broth added to an amuse at table side that probably should have been hotter, the meal was simply one perfect dish after another. Maybe the sorbet intermezzo was a little old school in such a fashion forward meal, but - hey - it was delicious! Keep it.The room is suitably formal, luxurious in a traditional style, and quite comfortable. The pace of service might be a little leisurely for some (I ate alone and the four-course menu (seven + courses, including amuses, etc) pushed it a bit, stretching just over three hours. However, the friendly and attentive staff kept an eye out the entire time and stopped by if the time between courses presented the opportunity. The somm, in particular, was a great diversion, visiting from time to time to discuss the varied and interesting wines on offer. He provided useful insight into the outstanding selection of trocken Rieslings on the list. He guided me to a 2001 Burklin-Wolf GG that, at Eu 150, was both a great bottle of mature white and a tremendous value for a wine of this quality in this type of restaurant. (Good luck finding a white burgundy of this quality at this price at any multi-star restaurant - or at retail, for that matter.) He also suggested a wonderful German Pinot Noir by the glass that worked perfectly with the meat course and wasn't terribly expensive. The list is extensive, but not the tome you see at some restaurants, but don't be fooled - wine service at Haerlin is both a major plus and represents notable value in the context of multi-star restaurants.I'm not going to argue two-star vs three-star because that distinction often seems to be kind of mysterious (and tangentially related to the food), but I will say that this place certainly deserves two stars. I had just a flat-out great meal. If you can work in a visit, Haerlin should be high on your list."
