"We popped in to The Mercantile Adventurer this morning. We were warmly greeted by a lovely young lady, who we later learned was called Charlotte. My daughter Leah took a real shine to her and they exchanged some lovely chat. We were made to feel very welcome and ordered a hot chocolate, a ginger chai tea and a chocolate brownie, all of which were presented beautifully and were delicious. We chatted together and also to Charlotte and the owner of the shop. This is a unique cafe offering not just great coffee, atmosphere and friendliness but also the change to shop too. There is a hair dressers, an upholstery shop (which I can highly recommend), there is also a wallpaper/ curtain design shop, there are some lovely clothes for sale, accessories, small gifts, bags and cards. All of which are high quality and reasonably priced. We concluded our visit by purchasing some cards and some of the delicious tea (ginger chai) to take home. The owner was so kind and gave me an infuser to use at home with the tea! Such a lovely gesture. We have been customers of The Mercantile Adventurer in the past and would recommend it to anyone. Thank you to Charlotte and all the staff for a lovely visit today. Gail Leah xxxxx"

Great coffee and incredibly delicious chocolate and almond vegan croissants. A few tables in inside, and a couple outside too. The shop is lovely to browse around too!

Popped in for lunch and had a fabulous tasty brie and bacon panini. Very friendly staff. Will be returning to try out the cakes and look around the independent shops set within the premises. Visualizza piatti

Had a great chai latte while waiting for a bus in burgess hill. Lovely venue with a shop and hairdressers inside. Didn’t have any food but it looked good. Staff and service were also great. Nice relaxed atmosphere, recommend.

Great spot for a coffee and pastry. A good range of lunches to take away too, and several other stalls selling those types of interesting item you have always looked for. Fully recommended, good to see a local business doing well.

A real jewel in Burgess Hill. As the rest of the town looks drab and boarded-up as part of the redevelopment, this place becomes better and brighter by the day. It serves some of the best, if not the best, coffee in the area. Staff are always pleasant, smiling and helpful. A particular mention for Phoebe serving the coffee with such style. It’s a pleasure to sit in the sun at the outside tables.

Have been coming to this place for a while now and this was the first time after lockdown . It is a real gem. Was served by the lovely Emma and sat outside in the glorious sunshine. Had my usual coffee which is by far the best in Burgess Hill town centre, my daughters had a iced coffee and a berry smoothie and they both loved them. I was even tempted by a vegan sausage roll and I am far from vegan, it was delicious and I will certainly have it again. Overall a really enjoyable pit stop, highly recommended x

"We go to Gravetye 3 or 4 times a year if we can and have been going for many many years over the tenures of several owners. It 's always a complete joy, and the current owner has done a fabulous job of getting the right people in, both inside and out. Tom Coward, the Head Gardener (ex. Dixter) has a vision and a long term plan that make continual visits over an extended period a joy every time we visit we are surprised by the continual changes we learn so much and the garden staff are super helpful and willing to discuss what they 're up to and why. The amazing oval massive kitchen garden that supplies the hotel is a source of wonderment and not to be missed. A visual and culinary feast. We 've never stayed there as we live reasonably close, but have eaten in both the old and new dining rooms many times. The new dining room sits harmoniously between the wings of the manor and although a very modern glass and steel construction, the inclusion of a fabulous antique (and uneven) parquet floor (ex. some french chateau) softens the feel and acoustics, making the room almost intimate. The floor to ceiling windows bring you right into the garden, even in the foulest of weather it 's a triumph of design. Then there 's the food. Apart from the presentation, which is exquisite, the flavours and textures always bring a broad grin, however grumpy I am! This is absolutely first rate British cuisine; the kitchen under Head Chef George Blogg is to be commended, as are the garden staff producing the freshest of produce. I occasionally try to photograph the plates, but invariably find I 've forgotten that rather crass move and have just launched in! Must also mention the front of house staff. Perfectly presented and mannered, they know exactly the boundary between staff and guest and make you feel completely comfortable and relaxed there is nothing stuffy or obsequious about Gravetye everything is pitched just spot on and nothing is too much trouble. We were there today for a birthday treat, but will be back again soon for a post family wedding get together. Cannot recommend too highly just an excellent few hours, whatever the weather. Walkability: Lots of paths. The lower areas are easy for those with limited mobility, however it might be tricky to get up to the kitchen garden if you 're not great on your feet. Food drinks: See my review."
