"Six of us turned up without a booking of which they couldn't seat us at that time (either two small or one larger table). This was understandable for a Sunday evening as it did appear busy. The gentleman taking bookings however did say they could happily accommodate us at 20:30. We turned back up at that time and we were led straight to our table. Fantasic we thought! The restaurant closes at 22:00 on a Sunday so we had plenty of time to relax and eat. After sorting drinks, we went up to order food. Overall it looked fantastic apart from the Chef stating that Toby do not serve pork crackling on a Sunday!? The meat area was very well presented and had two chefs carving. For some reason the queue still moves extremely slowly. Once passed the meet station, the food serving area looks like an absolutely unmanaged mess. This was not an isolated incident as the same was observed in a previous visit not too long beforehand. The gravy is a total disaster it's barely flavoured brown liquid with the consistency of water. About 20 minutes into enjoying our first round of food, the food station lights are turned off. Odd we thought there's the best part of an hour before the restaurant closes. No notice given to any customers, they just turned off the lights. It then appeared that the staff completely forgot that customers were still present and proceeded to enter into an unprofessional state where customers were an annoyance to them. Trying to be quick, we jumped up for the second round of veg where before we could get a yorkshire pud, one of the staff put her hand into the yorkshire puds container and pulled out a pud... unknowing where those hands had been, we decided to not bother having any more of those! Odd staff banter then proceeded. We thought we'd go for a top up to our bottomless soft drinks only to find that staff had also turned off the drink station unannounced. So we had unlimited refills but now only a single fill up. This was at approximately 21:10 when the restaurant closes at 22:00. A trip to the bar for a sneaky apperitif (was the BIL's birthday afterall) was met with tables/chairs put away, staff rudely not acknowling us and even a request for just some ice was too much trouble. Customers really are a hinderance to these workers. We only saw the person who seated us for a second time when it was due for us to pay. It was like they were hiding away... possibly desperate to get home (I know it's a Sunday evening) but also to consider is that a Sunday comes with a 50% increased meal cost premium by Toby. I will say that the food served (apart from the gravy) was very nice. A good selection of meats and a health portion size so long as paying for the upgrade. The lack of follow up trips let them down, but not as much as the absolutely poor staff service and lack of professionalism in front of customers! We may return again in the future but (a) much earlier, (b) with an advanced booking and (c) no expectations of customer friendly service this way we don't need to rely on staff actually communicating when food/drink is being deactived or have the courtesy of a bar drink hand delivered! To note we did not complain about service, food or drink. It was the BIL's birthday therefore we just paid and left quietly taking the horrendous service, lack of etiquette/manners, and underdelivered meal in the way they obviously expected us to. Staff service 1/10 Staff professionalism 2/10 Food taste 6/10 Food appealingness 3/10 Drinks 6/10"

"If you want to spend a total of nearly two hours waiting for your breakfast, this is the place for you! Queuing for 5 minutes to be ‘welcomed’, moving your own (uncleared) tables together … and no, they weren’t cleaned for us on arrival. After 10 minutes a waitress came over as we had 4 menus and she wanted to take one away but promised to come back to take our order. She didn’t. A further 10 minutes later, having watched four tables who had come in after we arrived being attended to, I walked to the nearest waiter and asked for our order to be taken next. 5 minutes later somebody came to take our order. We mentioned we had been waiting quite some time already. There was no apology forthcoming, nor any indication how long we would have to wait. Within our order we asked for a jug of tap water as well as teas and coffees. A further 10 minutes later, not even the water had arrived. We called the waitress who had taken our order over to ask for at least our water, and ideally the teas as well. It took a further 10 minutes for both to arrive. Some time later we asked when our food would arrive. We were asked if we had been advised on arrival that food orders were taking 30 to 40 minutes. We had not been advised that was the delay. Three of our meals then arrived but not my own. We expressed disappointment that we had waited around an hour and 30 minutes. A further 5 minutes elapsed and a different waitress appeared with a slip of paper and get this…. told us we had ‘only’ ordered our food 55 minutes ago. Quite how this was supposed to appease us, I’m not sure. As I was advising the waitress of our dissatisfaction, a lady chef approached, having heard us. She was quickly appalled at the lack of service we had received. We pointed out how many other later arrivals had received and even finished their food, whilst mine had yet to appear. Further horrified, she left to personally cook my missing eggs on toast, bringing them herself. “Happy Birthday to me!” I said (it was). At least this lady apologised and said she would not charge for my eggs on toast. Minutes later, the owner started clearing up around us. We expressed our intense disappointment and he uttered markedly insincere apologies whilst STILL trying to justify the unjustifiable! ‘Anything else?’ He asked ‘Well a significant discount would be appreciated” I said I’m not making this next part up….. “We work on very small margins, if I offered you a discount, I’d have to do it for everyone” We pointed out that his chef had already undertaken to remove my eggs on toast from our bill. He looked intensely unhappy at that news. My rough estimation of the raw material costs of eggs on toast is less than £1. In short, a dreadful experience due to a collective absence of attention to customer care, which clearly comes from the top down. We won’t be going to Honeydales Tea Shop again."

"Over the last six months, I've been eating here every single week, especially after prayer time in East London Masjid, and every time I went in, I had this strange feeling of being in East London before, and one day it just hit me like bang. I remember my dad used to take me there when I was probably like five or six years old, back in the days when East London was totally different. The old shops down Fashion Street, shopping with my dad, and then I remember he used to take me there for a kebab roll, and those memories just came flying back. First and foremost, I always tell my friends and family before I take them there, don't be put off by the appearance. It may look like a cafe out of the 1970s, but honestly the theme is needed. Even the menus, the boards, showing the prices, they look like it was put up there before I was born. But once again, this rustic theme is needed to preserve the traditional look and feel of this place. My favourite go-to dish, as always, is the kebab roll, with that beautiful green mint sauce. This is a place where people don't sit there for a long meal. It's a quick go-in order, the food comes super quick, within minutes you eat, and then you continue on your journey, going to wherever you were going to. The food is very affordable, not like inflated like the other places around the area. A kebab roll is £3.50, and there's plenty of tap water in jugs which are changed regularly. Once again, the place may look outdated, but it is very clean. The two brothers that work there, they have been there since day one. One thing that really brings a smile to my face is the friendship that they have between them, even though they're busy and they're colleagues, they're always quite cheerful with each other and the customers. And they don't have any silly policy of minimum spend by card. If you eat a kebab roll, just pay with card, no problem. I'm a victim of habit, I always stick to what I eat all the time. Whenever I take my younger son there, he loves the chicken curry and rice. He says it reminds him of Dadhi's house, chicken curry. It's a place where I often go and spend time on my own there, just reliving those moments from the past. Amazing."
