"This was our second visit and as our first was a good one decided to take our parents for Mother’s Day Sunday lunch. On arrival the restaurant was busy unlike our first so was good to see it like that, this was probably the only good thing yesterday. Were greeted and seated and handed menus, whilst looking through we were quite surprised to see just 3 starters on offer, one being soup then a fish and a beef tartare, not great if I’m honest. After about 15 minutes our drink orders were taken, the wine was quite prompt but the draft drinks seemed to take an age to arrive. Food orders were taken and the starters arrived, the soup was ok but not very warm at all, the mackerel starters were just shocking, both members of our party that ordered this said how minute it was which we could all see and it was pretty tasteless and bland, also they found it very difficult to cut the meat away from the skin as it just turned to mush, there was a very very small amount of avocado purée underneath, definitely not worth the cost as after 4 mouthfuls was finished. We all ordered the Sunday roasts of beef, lamb and pork, as mentioned we had been for Sunday lunch before and couldn’t fault it, this time however we were left in shock and embarrassed as we had told our families how good it was. The pork resembled a chop which was over cooked and the lamb and beef were quite chewy and definitely didn’t have the flavour we expected. The roast potatoes and Yorkshire were most definitely cooked the day (if not two) before and just re warmed, yes we understand this is needed on a busy Mother’s Day but they were all solid and on a couple of occasions we had food flying as it was cut into. We were all most dissatisfied and disappointed Needless to say we didn’t stay for desert. Will most certainly not be returning and would not recommend."

"Fantastic experience from start to finish. Very easy to book online. I received an email the day before to re confirm or cancel the booking. We came for lunch to celebrate my husband’s birthday. Beautiful place in a beautiful setting. Very welcoming and cosy. We were warmly greeted by Louise and asked if we would like to have a drink in the bar first and she would bring menus through. We ordered drinks then sat at a table. Louise brought menus through and wished my husband happy birthday. It was lovely that it had been noted and acknowledged. We were given ample time to browse the menu before our order was taken. We didn’t feel at all rushed and felt that we were very important. We were brought bread and butter to pick at while we waited, these were delicious, we especially loved the smoked butter with crispy onions. Our starters were amazing my husband had the bubble squeak and ham hock soup. I had the goats cheese mousse and beetroot carpaccio. Perfect sized portions. Mains were equally amazing. My husband had the guinea fowl with belly pork and I had ribeye. Both cooked perfectly. We were too full for dessert. Once we had asked for the bill my husband was brought a plate which had happy birthday written in chocolate sauce, a macaroon on it and what I could only describe as meringue kisses. Sounds simple but looked and tasted amazing. We knew we were going to have a good meal and expected to pay more than the usual pub prices but felt that prices were what we would expect for this high standard of quality of food and service. We feel we received excellent value for money and my husband enjoyed a lovely birthday lunch. The only downside is that we live slightly too far to visit more frequently."
