"Reading previous reviews we felt confident that Sunday Lunch for 8 of us including a child and teenagers at The Oliver Twist was the place to be especially as it was also quite local.A bonus during winter months. Staff acknowledged and engaged with us immediately on arrival, menu’s were distributed and drinks orders taken by friendly and attentive staff. Some of the starters were disappointing including the crab cake, the sauce accompanying the scotch egg, and the bread served with balsamic vinegar oil although the mushrooms on toast were very much enjoyed. The mains arrived and there was, in fairness, plenty of food presented. No one was going to leave the restaurant hungry. The breast of chicken was very moist and tender but the beef and pork were over cooked and dry. There was a plentiful selection of vegetables and crispy Yorkshire puddings but, sad to say, we’ve had better roasties. The saving grace were the desserts including the Eton Mess with raspberries, sticky toffee pudding and the apple pie. The panna cotta and doughnuts would have also received a thumbs up had it not been such a small portion! That diner was very disappointed! We are hoping it was an ‘off day’ for the chef and, that if we returned for a meal during the week, we would be pleasantly surprised. Do we give it another chance? ps We did report a very slippery floor after one of our party who was using crutches and another wearing high heels nearly lost their balance. By the time we had paid the bill and were leaving (about 25 minutes) it had not been attended to. The restaurant was busy and the atmosphere was pleasant. Could do better The Oliver Twist although our hound was very grateful for his doggy bag!"

"A very traditional and sympathetic building but there is more, a lot more. We stayed for a weekend after choosing somewhere south of us from Spalding. There was a lot to chose from obviously, but within an hour or so we settled on Chatteris as the crime rate looked low, looked promising as a hub to explore the Fenlands and its natural beauty of bird spots. We rang around and liked the sound of the cross keys, a very warm welcoming feeling flushed over us so we booked direct and it did not disappoint. The attention to details, the historical artefacts, the respect shown by everyone to each other was very moving. The room was immaculate, spotless and well stocked with condiments. We ate on both nights and the service was 10/10, the food equally so. We made the right choice! Speaking to what we now know as David and Rebecca, the owners we were enthralled to receive a guided tour of their function room and other rooms. A well in the floor, wow! Flagstones in the middle, swords and shields everywhere, it certainly captured our imagination. Where else could you stay in a magnificent 'palace ' like this at these prices? It was like Hampton Court. The Wi Fi in the room was exceptionally fast as we understand a previous resident had ripped out the RJ11 cable whatever that meant but David certainly knew his technical stuff. We felt very, very safe with all the CCTV cameras around and how all the regulars looked after each other even leaving their wallets and cigarettes on the bar as everyone knew it was perfectly safe. We did venture out just out of curiosity along the High Street. Walked into one pub a few feet up and walked straight out again, no thank you. Then across the road to another establishment to see a strange man sat in a room on his own grinning to himself in the window. Again, we walked in and walked out. There were some nice shops in the high street. Overall, we made the right choice and cant thank the staff and regulars for really making a great experience."
