"I used to frequent this restaurant years ago when I lived in Hull. Will go as far as saying it was unrivalled when it came to the quality of the food it served. Hence, when I had the opportunity to visit again when I found myself in Hull, I was quite happy and had anticipated a good quality meal. Went there with my family, and the food was one of the worst I’ve experienced, verging on inedible. It’s a shame as it used to be a place the offered really good food."

"we picked here for our double date night. we was struck straight away by the great layout and decor...effort has gone in. we all ordered from a very helpful and attentive waiter. the foot arrived prompt and plentiful! we loved the food, felt authentic too. we had some good banter with the waiter about how good it was which led the owner to come and chat to us. its great to go somewhere that is so attentive and has that personal touch. for me its that attention which makes this place special. we will be back again"

"There is a lot of potential for this restaurant, as I arrived with four colleagues who have been here before. However, I have experienced long wait times in the past. On this particular visit, we all wanted a full breakfast, but the restaurant was quite empty during the slow winter trade. Despite this, all of the directors were having a meeting for merging companies and asked us to wait outside in the rain. They could have offered for us to wait in the entrance, but it seemed like they were not concerned about losing our business. As a result, the four of us will not be returning and I will not be recommending this restaurant to my staff. It is clear that the management does not prioritize their customers."

"My family and I (a party of 8, including 2 children) had a wonderful evening at this restaurant. I want to give a special shoutout to our waitress, Kii, who was incredibly attentive and went above and beyond to interact with the children and make them laugh! Although the service for food and drinks was a bit slow, it wasn't too terrible. The pizzas were delicious, and some of us also enjoyed the desserts. The prices were reasonable, and we definitely plan on returning in the future."

"WOW! I really fancied a proper burrito for lunch and not from a fast food outlet where there is no character or flavour to the food! A quick google search pulled up this little food outlet in the indoor trinity market in the old town! its been a long time since i have been in here and its changed so much! We ordered 3 different meat filled burritos and we all enjoyed them. They were well filled and contained lots of meat! All the burritos were freshly prepared to order. You are given an electric buzzer which indicated your order was ready so you can sit and chill. The burritos only cost £5 each and for the size of them i feel this is a bargain! We did also try the Jarritos Mexican cola and to be honest for £3.50 I wasn't impressed. I'd recommend either a normal coke or a different flavour of Jarritos if your feeling lavish. The service from the lady was very friendly and helpful too Overall a very enjoyable lunch and plenty of dessert places for pudding!"

"The completely unprofessional and ill tempered staff with the exception of the chef ruined our trip to the gallery. First the poor woman on the till trying to take orders lacked training and was completely out of her depth. There were two waitresses and one had to supervise her all the time so that created more pressure. After a long wait to order in a queue of only 3 we chose a table. It wasn't busy as we were quite early for lunch with around 12 diners were in. I talked to the lady trying to work the till, asked her if she'd had any training working it before customers arrived. She said no, they are in at the deep end. I told her she had my sympathy and as there was a Suggestion Box right in front of me I said I'd make a constructive suggestion re training. But there were no cards to write on. A waitress tore me a scrap of paper to use. Quite quickly a waitress brought my friends meal, which looked very nice and said mine would be a bit later. This was unprofessional as people having lunch together want to eat at the same time. Then the waitress came back again and apologised saying she had brought that meal to the wrong table. Unfortunately my friend had already eaten some as it was getting cold. The waitress said mine would be a longer wait now as they were backed up. A few more people had just arrived. By this time my friend was halfway through her meal and it was obvious we were not going to be eating together and lunch would take much longer than usual. As we only had 2 hours for eating then looking around the gallery I went to the till and told them to cancel my meal. I got a refund, my friend eat half her food and we left. While at the till getting the refund and in front of the queue of around 9 people the older waitress gave an aggressive diatribe about how mistakes happen, they do their best, short staffed, lack of training etc etc etc. She reeled off so many excuses for the abysmal service it sounded well rehearsed. I get it that she is badly trained, short staffed. Management need to deliver what these women need to perform their roles effectively and professionally."

"Blown apart by the tawook dish... i think is the only dish I have eaten in Hull that I can say I can just eat it until I explode. Seriously, if you combine it with the Houmous and the super amazing chilli sauce they make in the house you will just say OH MY GOD THIS IS AMAZING. Do not expect clean environment or any other of this western things. This place keeps it real."

"during our day trip to hull we pumped every day either to breakfast or just to the coffee in the wonky tulip. it lies directly at the river from the premier inn, at one of the entrances to the old town. the coffee was so. good, a million miles away from some of the terrible things served by the great chains the staff has a great job, welcoming and friendly, and especially thanks to linda? which gave us many tips/information on the things that were before us. you brot was really good and we bought a holiday to take home. award-winning everything was a great worth if they want qualitatiw high quality coffee and friendly service, they will not be disappointed"

"Having booked to go to Wroclaw in December we decided to try some authentic Polish Cuisine in Hull. We now can't wait to get to Poland to try some more polish delights! Kuchnia is a lovely restaurant, and the staff are brilliant. Anna was so helpful explaining what was in all the dishes. The food itself was fantastic. Never mind going to some poncy michelin star restaurant, get yourself here!............However if you want microwaved food that is served 3 min after you order, don't. This is freshly prepared food that is cooked to perfection, so you have to wait a while. Great evening, we will be returning in the near future"

Until I saw the last review I hadn’t realised it had changed hands as I’d been placing delivery orders over the phone and it always arrives in good time to East Hull piping hot and absolutely delicious every time, I’ve never had a bad experience with this Indian and have been using it since as far back as 1996. "We’ve been coming to sailmakers every week for a good year now but the last 3/4 times we hav eaten the steak skillets have been really bad the portions are just enough to feed a child our most recent visit 02/02/2024 we ordered a skillet it didn’t come sizzling like it should the food was cold I asked 3 times for peppercorn sauce which I’d paid for separately ! By the time it did my husband had finished his meal who also said his meal was cold and very small but ate it anyway as he was soo hungry . I complained to the waitress I’ll get you some more chips ? I explained I’d still not received my peppercorn sauce either she was gone ages in the meantime my food was even colder . She brought 2 bowls of hot chips out peppercorn sauce I said the rest of my food is cold my husband has eaten his she said you can still eat the chips I told her I want a refund I’m not paying for a child’s portion of food that is stone cold she said ok I’ll will have to take your meal away so she did and offered a free pudding ? Which I declined This will be the last time I eat in at the sailmakers !!! don’t know if they have a new chef and been told to cut back on portions 11 cold chips an 8oz Luke warm rump as big as the palm of my hand With a table spoon of peas half of tomatoe doesn’t even fill the skillet the plate just looks empty good job we ordered extras 4 pieces of scampi 5 onion rings what a insult"

"We were extremely disappointed with the long wait for our food at this restaurant. The service was slow and the meal did not flow smoothly. Many tables around us were also waiting for their orders. The food itself was underwhelming. We ordered a chicken tikka dhansak, but were disappointed to find that it lacked the expected heat and lentils that are typical of this dish. The naan breads were the highlight of the meal, as they were enjoyable. Overall, the prices were not cheap and the quality of the food was not the best. We do not plan on returning to this restaurant in the future."

"I visited this restaurant with my friend. We were not aware of their booking system, so we went inside to order. One rude staff member kept repeating that most tables were booked. We decided to sit outside anyway, but the service was still not very friendly. We were given a menu and went outside to decide on our order. When I went back inside to order, another staff member was arguing with the first about the booked tables. I ordered a bacon mushroom dish for my friend and an egg mushroom dish for myself. We were not asked if we wanted any sauces until the food was brought out. The food was average as far as sandwiches go. We sat outside for about 1.5 hours and the reserved seats remained empty the whole time. We visited a second time, and the lady who served us was much friendlier, but it may have been because we had a baby with us. She kept coming over to talk about the baby. I am not sure if I would return for a more expensive meal with this type of service."

"Needed something to eat before meeting up with freidns for a night out in town. Spotted this place and took a quick gander at the menu and thought we would pop in. The decor of the place is nice a articticly done, with a few quirky images. Whilst the item that initially drew us in was that face that is was seling 'The Pie Shop ' pies [well known in Hull for very good quality and flavoursome pies] we actually decided on a more 'tapas ' style small plate offering. You get to chose 3 small plates for the very reasonable £12ish price point. We went for the gnocci, some calimari and also some Chorizo...and they are all served with some ciabatta bread. The food came to us in reasonable time, although the barmen apologised for the delay. Im lead to believe that there was a longer delay if we were having mains, but again we did hear the barman letting people know that before ordering. To me I do not mind the wait, if the food is worth it. For us, with the small plates, it was, and even if we had had a main [i.e. the Pies] then we know how good they are, so would have just sat back and enjoyed the place [and an extra pint] whilst waiting. The 3 small plate selection we had filled us nicely to line the stomach before hitting the town for a few beers, and left us satiated with tasty nibbles, without the destended stomach and no room for any drinks. Will definately be going back for the Pie experience."

"we were greeted today by two beautiful ladies. we ordered three different desserts that all looked great and tasted amazing! I also wanted to book a table for the birthday of my daughter and the lady was really helpful and answered all my questions. they even said that they would decorate it for us! that was my third visit and it was beautiful every time. a really chilled place I would definitely recommend."

"The food at this restaurant is incredibly tasty and has shown definite improvement. It seems to get better each time we visit. The vegan menu offers a wide variety of options, with the "not dogs" being particularly delicious. The staff were all very friendly and efficient. I would like to give special recognition to the male manager who handled some challenging situations with great customer service skills. We may consider returning at a less busy time, as there were too many children during our visit."

"I usually don't write reviews, but I felt compelled to share my experience tonight. The restaurant was not even half full, yet the mistreatment we faced was inexcusable. What should have been a pleasant family dinner turned into a complete disaster. We regretted coming here and we will never be back. If you enjoy being served by rude waitresses and having your meal ruined, then this is the place for you! Despite requesting all our food to come out together, it arrived sporadically, leaving the kids frustrated. We asked for sauces that never arrived, and when we complained, we were accused of lying. Our drink orders were mixed up, and despite asking multiple times, they never came. Our table was never cleared throughout our ordeal. Additionally, one of our party members got burnt when using the mother and baby changing unit due to scalding hot water coming out of the tap with no warning signs. The waiter dismissed our concerns until we showed her the injury. The waitresses we dealt with were incredibly rude and unprofessional, even pretending to be the manager. We were provided with a form to fill out for the injury, but were left waiting for over 20 minutes with no resolution in sight. Our plans to go to the cinema were ruined, and the kids were left disappointed. We were appalled by the lack of customer service and will not be returning. Overall, a horrific experience that could have been easily avoided with a simple apology."

"I had booked a table online for Valentine's Day and showed the confirmation email to the waitress when we arrived, only to be told that there was no table reserved for us. Despite showing her the confirmation email, the waitress seemed unsure of what to do next. She suggested speaking to the manager, who informed us that they had stopped taking online bookings two weeks prior and were unable to accommodate us. There was no offer of compensation or even a formal apology from the manager, which left us feeling disappointed. This was a highly disappointing experience from a restaurant that is otherwise well-regarded. Thank you for ruining our evening."

"The service at this restaurant was terrible. I forgot to mention that I had a 30% off mains discount when I was paying, and the barman told me it was too late to apply it, which I found shocking. Other places have been able to cancel the sale and reapply the discount for me in the past. After paying full price for our meal, my mum ordered the apple crumble and custard pudding for £5.99, which we found to be extremely expensive. The custard portion was so small, with only about two tablespoons in a jug, leaving the crumble very dry. Overall, it was a terrible experience and we will not be returning. Don't waste your money here."

"Very nice place to spend a couple of hours. Exterior (front) seating and nicely presented. I believe there could be a beer garden to the rear. The interior is nicely furnished and decorated. Plenty of seating and table settings. Very large place. Attentive staff. Nice customers. Lovely latte. The food is outstanding. We've never had a poor offering. I usually go for the small plates option and purchase 3 different ones olives with warm bread and a butter, Panko halloumi with a salad garnish and chilli dip and creamy garlic mushrooms (to die for). All are delicious. Food is beautifully presented and efficiently served. Clean place and decent toilet facilities. Definitely worth paying a visit to Garbutts if you're stuck for somewhere to eat or drink."
