"I last reviewed The Cosy Dove at Spital Tongues a few years ago when I raved about the Theakston’s Barista Stout, which sadly due to the dismal state of the country has disappeared Mrs B is doing a nearby muddy fun run in aid of Bowel Babe cancer research today at Exhibition Park, so suffering from dodgy knees currently and not being able to stand for extended periods (go on feel sorry for me I’ve dropped into the too-near-not-to-go-into-again Cosy Dove for lunch while I wait to hear she’s completed her obligations and can be collected to sit on the bin bags to protect the car seats from her and her friends’ muddy torsos. Spellcheck says it’s torsos so why it’s not potatos and tomatos I’ll never know. Hey ho. Or maybe it’s hey hoe. Spellcheck does not guide me in this instance. Interval. I digress. The Cosy Dove was last time, and remains, excellent in every respect bar the absence of Barista Stout. I lunched on Beef Stew Cobbler with Scarborough-style Leek and Spring Onion dumplings on top broccoli, baby carrots and potato croquettes. In days gone by I reckon it’d have been creamy horseradish mash, but the aforementioned dismal state of the country has had an effect on menus nationwide I suppose- businesses need to remain viable and it’s a hard enough time for the licensed trade already. The steak was melt in the mouth soft, and the potato croquettes were crispy and pleasant. Suffice to say there is no photo of this as it was gone too quick lol, it was that good I decided to take further advantage of my presence and have a pud (oops sorry dessert too, being enticed by the Biscoff Cheesecake on the Specials Board. It appeared quicker than you can say Jack Robinson (who I’ve actually worked with previously but I reckon the cliché was created prior to his conception…… and, together with a little jug of double cream and heavenly caramel sauce on top, was consumed with haste but reverence to the time taken to create it- bought in apparently, but definitely good enough to have been home made So, no Barista Stout, but still a wide and palatable variety of liquid refreshments. See photos. And a well stocked and still eclectic spirits selection. Eclectic is a trendy description these days isn’t it. PopMaster contestants use it continually to describe their music tastes. The Cosy Dove is one of those uniquely inviting pubs where you can go in a total stranger and despite how nervous you might be, you can still strike up a conversation which is good for the soul. Huge amounts of character, parking out back, outside tables out back, side and front, and a very good time to be had in any scenario accompanied by swift, pleasant and efficient staff. Ding dong. Thanks again; see you next time I’m over this way "

"Visited here yesterday with my son, with great expectations after reading reviews on Tripadvisor. To say that we were disappointed would be an understatement. We were given a table for two overlooking the river, very pleasant, although on taking in the surroundings, the place looked a bit grubby and in need of some tlc. The second we had sat down a waiter appeared at the table asking if we wanted drinks. I requested a few minutes to look at the drinks menu, before ordering a Diet Coke, son ordered fresh orange juice and lemonade. Coke was flat. I ordered Thai fish cakes as a starter, son ordered potato skins. The fish cakes resembled a cork beer mat…about 1/4 inch thick and rock hard having obviously been overcooked. Potato skins were edible. Main course…lasagne and chunky chips for me, fillet steak with Diane sauce, chips and a side portion of onion rings for son. Lasagne was a thick, congealed, dried out, burnt mess on the plate. Clearly not freshly prepared and had been heated up to within an inch of its life in the microwave. Chips were not freshly cooked, looked and tasted as if they had been made days ago and reheated. I had two mouthfuls and left the entire meal. Fillet steak overcooked and sauce tasteless, second portion of ordered chips didn’t arrive, onion rings greasy and cold. From sitting down, to being served, starters and mains took approx 15 minutes…says it all really. At no point whilst eating did anyone ask if our food was ok, although two waiters appeared to be watching us constantly, making us feel very uncomfortable. On clearing the table I quietly and discreetly expressed my disappointment with the meal to the waiter with glasses, who apologised and agreed to remove the Lasagne from the bill, but the taller, bald waiter became very defensive and argumentative, to the point of being confrontational. The blonde waitress who settled our bill was pleasant and appeared understanding of the situation. To summarise, to anyone looking to spend their hard earned money, there are many food establishments in Newcastle offering a far better customer experience and superior food. We wouldn’t go back to Sambucca and wouldn’t recommend."

"I wasn't going to write a review but I saw this had 4.5 which is a lie in my opinion. From the moment I entered the restaurant it was dead even tho there was people inside. I was sat with my friend literally felt like the same table as the other white couple and was really uncomfortable. I could hear a pin drop in the restaurant. No atmosphere at all. Table service was abysmal I had to get my waitresses attention I wasn't sure if she was going to take our order I felt abandoned. Food was INEDIBLE my prawns still had there heads on so the brains was squrting everywhere. My tomyum soup was separated I could barely breath there was so much chilli but I was so hungry I had to eat something. My tempura prawns were like corn dog prawns with the head left on!! I took a bite into prawns brains. I was almost sick. And lastly they had nothing I wanted on there menu but didn't tell.me this I was very disappointed and embarrassed as I had to choose things I didn't want cos I qas hungry and in the end my Noodles were sticking together smothered in oil tasted bland and rancid. I took them back as I couldn't eat it. Was disgusting my friends food looked like toilet water. I will not be going back and people deserve to know how bad this restaurant is. Please don't waste your money I had so many high expectations but was let down hard. Waste of money and way over priced. If u have no taste buds or standards will enjoy this place"
