Chez Nicole - Menu

I've been here many times. Like the other excellent restaurant next door this is a lunchtime only place.Local workmen sit at a long table headed by the owner Nicole and are served a delicious ,no choice, 5 course meal with wine .If you are on your own you might be invited to join them. Otherwise there are plenty of other tables. The food is copious and good. This modest restaurant is only suitable for people prepared to take the place as they find it.

Le menu €13 (don't sell yourself short and settle for plat de jour). Tureen of fava bean soup was simple, and simply delicious; mixed salad with tuna rice, tomato and marinated cucumber sent us forward nicely and the escalope de beaux, accompanied by haricots vert was wonderful,; assorted local cheeses preceded a tasty fruit and almond tarte. Everything was well presented, served with style and pleasantness from the bar. Simple country fare in France is equal to several of Glasgow's finest dining experiences. Inspirational.

This small village restaurant was recommended to us and we had their menu ouvrier (workers menu) on a Saturday which, on that occasion, comprised 5 courses - soup (a whole tureen), crudités (melon, pate, salami), pork meatballs and potatoes in a sauce (delicious), a cheeseboard selection & raspberries with ice cream - all for Euros 13.50 (ca. £10) per head, including bread and water. We were shown a limited wine list but drank beer. However, we noticed some of the locals appeared to have unlabelled bottles of wine, presumably containing a cheaper local brand that may not have appeared on the wine list. Would be very happy to visit again when next in the area.

The set meal is €12 and you share tureen of soup, then charcuterie with good bread and slices of melon, then main meal which was first time a pork steak and second time beef stew, both times accompanied by very good potato daupinoise. Then came a selection of cheeses (could have done with being out of the fridge longer), then pudding (chocolate eclairs and can't remember the other), finished off with coffee. The ones we wanted had closed for the Summer as had our second choice! If you’re anywhere nearby, don’t miss the chance to try Chez Nicole. Incredible value at €13.50 per person (and we split an additional ‘person’ between our 2 kids), you’re in for a delicious, slow, 5 course meal. There is no menu you just have whatever they bring out. Starting with soup (tomato with vermicelli today, thick with home made stock), then followed by charcuterie, melon and a tomato salad. We then had the ‘main’: a slow cooked beef casserole that was rich and delicious, served with pasta. Then the cheese course and finally dessert which was a bit of an underwhelming packaged ice cream.
