"And that includes in Japan. A word first on kushiage - it's small bites of ingredients on a skewer, breaded and then fried. Done well, it's neither heavy nor greasy - the chef should spin the skewer to remove any excess oil. Grab the right seat here and you'll see that in action. And speciality Japanese restaurants mainly doesn't mean they have one or two specialities in an otherwise wide-ranging menu - it literally means they specialise in one type of meal. So you come to a kushiage restaurant expecting to eat kushi...Expect a friendly welcome - the staff are either Japanese or Japanese-speaking but all will be greeted heartily. I used to come weekly when I was working in Berlin and there were a few occasions when I was the only non-Japanese. It adds to the authenticity.Best bit is the omakase where the chef will select each skewer, taking account of any dietary preferences (vegetarian in my case). They're served one at a time on a plate which mirrors the one in front of you that holds a variety of sauces - the placement then is effectively the chef's serving suggestion. The veggie options tend to be single ingredients, allowing you to enjoy the taste of that ingredient. They range from the relatively prosaic, such as red peppers, to things that I have never eaten outside a kushi context, like ginkgo nuts and konnyaku (a yam starch). Having been a regular, I also got to see that the offering was seasonal - the white asparagus is delicious. Worth a try, I've recommended it widely and I reckon it bears repeated visits."

Service and ambience very good. Menu simple. For those that like sizeable meals though this is not their place. If you are not so hungry and would like to savour good and different food then go for it.

Every ingredient was fresh and we enjoyed the variety of tastes & texture. The service was very good, reminding us of being in Japan. The area it's located actually looks like Yuurakucho too. London should have one like this.

Are here on Friday night and booked online. The service was great and most of the food quite nice but found it a bit pricey. Maybe that's why it was practically empty! Glad we went to try something completely different but wouldn't return.

If you are looking for this style of japanese restaurant (fried food on skewers), Kushinoya is the place to go. I have lived in Japan and I can confirm all the good reviews already written here. Moreover, you can choose a sake degustation set of 3 sake which is quite a good idea to have a try.

This is a certain style of japanese kitchen where everything is gently deep fried on skewers. You get one serving at the time with sauce to match. There is beef, mushroom, tofu etc. Start of with 10 and some edamames and add a couple at the end if you have room. Very well priced and lots of japanese guests that wows for the quality! Will return.

A very authentic experience with delicious food, great drinks, and impeccable service. It is pricy for Berlin but worth the cost. Their special kushis are a novel eating experience that is served up in an equally novel way. You are served the food in waves as it is prepared so the dining vibe is a bit like fondue where it is an all-night kind of session. I will definitely return

After the Rokko closed some years ago, Kushinoya is now the only professional place where you can get very delicious Kushi (deep fried fish, vegetables or meat on a skewer). It's definitely not for everyday (with skewer, drinks and dessert you have to calculate at least 50€ p.p) but the atmosphere is still relaxed and staff is super friendly. The bathroom is on the same level as the restaurants not problematic for people with a walking disability. Give the Yuzu Sake a try!!!

My husband found this ranked as the best Japanese restaurant in Berlin on a Japanese web site. Since we are fond of kushikatsu -- deep fried meat on skewers, we looked forward to this meal. We opted to eat a la carte because we didn't want to eat just fried foods and so chose the kind of skewers we wanted. This turned out to be expensive. Unfortunately, the bits were small and sometimes we couldn't tell what was inside the coating. Pork on skewers is usually at least 3 good-sized bites, but here it was only one. And the offerings were quite greasy and with rather odd dipping sauces. The sake was extraordinarily expensive and we didn't like it. So why rank this restaurant even average? Becaus...
