"My father always said: In every town in France, there is a good restaurant very close to the train station, or right next to it. This is the first restaurant you come to when you come out of the train station in Arles, and it...is true to form. It also happens to be right next to the maison jaune the famous Vincent Van Gogh painting of the house Van Gogh lived in, while living in Arles. Unfortunately the maison jaune was bombed during WWII, but you can still see the painting, a few feet from the restaurant, next to the fountain. The restaurant is unpretentious in appearance, but real good food for the money. You may notice that the clientele includes many local folks. The firewood oven pizzas are just stupendous, so much better than any pizza we usually get in the States. For lunch If you want to immerse yourself in the french culture, you may want to start with a pastis [local cocktail] and then order a pizza to share for 3 or 4, as appetizers. The salade paysanne is excellent. The bavette (steak) with frittes (french fries) is also very good. Great sea food too. The house rosé (regional wine) goes well with most choices. If you still have room for a dessert, there is a good assortment, and to finish, the expresso is just right. Very reasonable prices and friendly staff. One of my favorite restaurants in Arles. Best for the money."

Unlike some restaurants that think that vegetarian means lots of raw or plainly cooked vegetables this vegetarian plate was innovative. It included a vegetable terrine with artichokes and carrots, an egg based fried cake, salad and fresh asparagus.

Classic French cuisine. Very generous servings. Both food and wine are reasonably priced. Lots of space in the restaurant and on the outside terrace, that is, you are not pushed up against other diners. Our visit was on a Saturday and they don’t appear to have a menu of the day. I understand they have a very good menu of the day from Monday to Friday. If it’s a good pizza cooked in a wood burning oven and a good, generous salad plus reasonable prices, then you can’t go wrong with the Brasserie le France. Service was good and friendly. Plenty of on street parking but payable 7 days a week.

"This restaurant is part of a hotel in a very impressive 16th century building. It looks very classy. However, the night we were there, there must have been some serious problems in the kitchen (or maybe it is always like that . We started with a shared plate of charcuterie which took a long time to arrive – how long does it take to arrange the cold meats on a plate? We then waited a very, very long time for our main courses. While waiting, we saw a dispute at another table involving the maître d’ and resulting in plates going back to the kitchen. We had both ordered duck à l’orange which came with Camargue rice. The rice appeared to have been baked in the oven and was so crisp and dry that it resembled a cereal bar. The ‘orange’ was not the usual sauce, but instead was four cubes of orange that appeared to have been scorched on a grill. They added nothing to the dish. It had been suggested that we should share a side of seasonal vegetables. These turned out to be big chunks of boiled potatoes (with rice! , a boiled root vegetable and a couple of dry artichokes. We had interchanges with two servers and the maître d – all were cold and brusque. We lived in France for more than 20 years and appreciate the fact that the French like to take their time with meals, but there is a big difference between leisurely and glacially slow. Perhaps we were there on a bad night, others seem to have had a better experience."
