"We had made a booking post Christmas when we previously visited the Black Boy when we worked for Oxford Brookes in Headington and were always satisfied with the experience, Now we are restarted, we nrmaly meeting monthly and usually with little announcement and have frquently disappointed that it was fully booked. However, I had a dental appointment so had a good news and managed to get a lunch booking. Unfortunately, the tooth date was over and was more painful than expected, so I could only get the excellent soup and wine (not all bad! but my friend had a main course with which he was very satisfied, and a lush dessert. The service was fast, attentive and sympathetic! This visit confirmed our previous opinion that the Black Boy is a very plentiful and relaxing place to eat, the food and wine are alway very good and it has an excellent ambience; highly recommended"

Great place to catch up with friends. Enough room to not hear next doors conversation. Friendly staff, quiet and efficient service.

The food was really nice. But a few disappointing questions about the booking arrangements surprised what was otherwise a really pleasant lunch.

Good booking process. Good food with a wide choice on the menu. Lovely friendly service. Particularly good puddings! They were accommodating with the presentation of a cake (that we provided) with coffee after the meal.

We choose to come here as the menu looks good online. It was busy for Thursday night luckily we reserved a table. Food tasted good and was served very quickly. Food prices isn’t too either. Service could be a bit better, but overall we were happy.

After hearing great things about this Pub I was excited to finally see what it was like for myself. I was disappointed by my visit. It was fine. The food was nice but I had been told this was one of the better places to eat in Oxford. Based off my experience it isn't. The waiters seemed to be going through the motions. I would not go back to this pub or recommend it to a friend.

It’s been quite a while since we last dined at the Black Boy and unfortunately we won’t be back, I’m not sure if it’s changed hands recently but it’s gone seriously downhill Scruffy hungover looking staff, a large menu (which hinted correctly at the prodigious use of freezer and microwave) and poorly presented cool and bland food. Such a shame as it used to be one of the best places in Oxford for Sunday lunch whereas now it very much trails the field and offers food below the standard on offer by the value for money chains.

Ever reliably top-notch since it reverted a couple of years back from trying to be a posh hotel restaurant to a gastropub in the proper sense of offering gourmet pub food. The menu no longer overreaches and the kitchen is immeasurably the better for it. A usually full dining room of, I suspect, mostly locals testifies it to how the place has hit its stride. A steak and a burger this time, both served to the requested medium rare (an instruction too often honoured in the breach in the case in area restaurants) and cooked and seasoned to perfection. The quality of the food makes the prices excellent value. The service rounds off an overall very good experience. You can eat in the garden, too,...

"we enjoyed another very pleasant dinner at the Dog’ in pentrich recently. it is a very civilized but relaxed escaping area, and the type of place where people are miles for, for the culinary experience traveling and with good ground. eating is good. the dining room is spacious, contemporary and beautifully furnished with a relaxed ambiente. also the adjacent bar area is very cozy and cozy. we were warmly welcomed and immediately shown on our table. the service was attentive and pleasant, without being overlaid or intrusive. our meals were very pleasant and we enjoyed the selection of things we had (start, head and dessert). However, it seemed to be some unconsistencies with a portion size. with the appetizers the leek and the potato portion was very small a piece laek about two centimeters long filled with cheese and in a sea of sauce to convey the grasp of “more”. the crispy szechuan cauliflower and aubergine, on the other hand, contained large parts of the two components of the teller. similar to the net, the green thai chicken contained three very large portions of huh in different shapes: a large chicken breast as the main component of the Thai chicken shell, accompanied by a huge serving of shredded chicken in rice, and a huge Bao beer filled with a large piece of baked chicken. while the various components were delicious, it was just chicken overload, almost like three main dishes as one, and much too much. the same applies to the puddings we have chosen. the dog inn trifle was a huge bowl with lemon-rossel sponge, with white chocolate-creuzard, and celestial gel and sorbet. the yorkshire rhubarb cheesecake, on the other hand, was a very small roll of cheesecake with a puppy game of rhubarb sorbet and a few pieces of poached rhubarb. our meals were certainly delicious, and we enjoyed them. the hanger steak was cooked nicely after a discussion about it; it was clearly stated on the menu that the hanger steak was ‘Served ‘Pink or well Done’, but we were informed that it could not be ordered well. which condition is then on the menu? the dog is worth looking. it is in the beautiful and historical village pentrich, on the b1016 between the towns ripley and alfreton in derbyshire. we're coming back."
