"Afternoon tea was booked at this hotel as a birthday gift by a friend. I had driven over 100 miles on the hottest day of the year and had skipped breakfast and lunch in anticipation of a lavish afternoon tea at 2pm. What a complete...let down. And a total rip-off. We arrived on time although the parking situation presented a challenge so we checked in five minutes late. We were shown to our table and asked if we wanted drinks. Er, no, we’ve come for afternoon tea so that’s what we will have please. He left us with menus but never came back. After twenty minutes of sitting in a stifling hot and airless dining/tea room where staff were milling about but not paying attention to the handful of guests, my friend donned her face mask and got out of her chair to go across the room and approach one of them to ask for us to be served. The waiter then came over and took our order asking if we had any dietary requirements. My friend had already provided these on the reservation but no matter, we stated them again. She’s vegetarian and I don’t eat red meat. Noted down by the waiter. The tea pots arrive…beautiful but impractical silver that is heavy, red hot and awkward to lift and pour without burning your fingers. Bizarrely, my choice of the usually light and refreshing Earl Grey tea was dark and stewed, metallic and tannin tasting. Quite revolting. On to the food, eventually a small two-tier cake stand was delivered to our table dressed with a selection of miniature scones (the smallest pot of cream and jam between us both that you could ever imagine), two lemon possets and some bite-sized sweet treats. On the bottom level were just four tiny finger sandwiches at each end; meagre and unimaginative fillings for those who don’t eat meat, and nowhere near enough food for my all-day nurtured appetite. But they were fresh at least. There was also a slice of pie and for my veggie friend a light cracker thing with wasabi paste on it. I asked if the pie slice was pork. The waitress said yes. After some discussion with her about our dietary requirements she said “shall I take it away then?”. By this time I’m seriously feeling the irritation. I’m hungry, thirsty and hot, and this is almost a bad joke. If it hadn’t been for the fact that my friend booked this tea and I was embarrassed at the impact it was having on me, I would have simply stood up and walked out. The cake stand was taken away and returned with the pork pie removed and another cracker thing in its place. By this time it was almost 40 minutes after our arrival and this was our lot…for an eye-watering £30 each (plus a cheeky service charge added). I was outraged at their audacity to charge that much money for such slim offerings, vile stewed tea and appalling service. I mentioned to a waiter about the lack of savoury options and my horrid pot of tea and asked for it to be changed; he suggested English Breakfast tea. That came and was just as bad; like builders’ tea that you could stand your spoon up in. I was so fed up and in fear of completely blowing a fuse I went outside for five minutes to calm down. When I came back in I had composed myself and decided to accept things as they were rather than make any more fuss as it was ruining the whole afternoon and unfair on my friend. On my way in I politely asked the waiter for a simple tea bag and hot water. He reluctantly obliged saying they are not actually allowed to serve tea bags. I said I didn’t mind and that was what I wanted. A bog standard tea bag in a teapot of hot water and a fresh cup and saucer arrived. Bliss, at last, a refreshing drink. How the hell can they get brewing tea so wrong? I suspect it was pre-prepared and standing in tea urns but they insisted it was fresh. To be fair to the waiter who dealt with my complaining he was patient and kind, seeing how upset I was and did his best to placate me, bringing a small savoury something extra. It wasn’t his fault that the kitchen were delivering this pitiful tea and I would like to say thank you to him for diffusing my bad mood; your excellent customer service skills are wasted in this hotel. I’m going to The Ritz in London for tea in a few weeks’ time which although is £55 each, I know I’m guaranteed a wonderful afternoon in an ambient setting, with impeccable and attentive service, a decent cup of Earl Grey, my dietary requirements met and as many sandwiches as I would like to eat."

what a shame that the gallery restaurant promises so much in terms of style/atmosphere/place, but when we went, delivered so little in terms of the taste of the food and the really pale portions. if they choose a la carte, I. recommend to check if the same dish is on the Tasting menu because if it is, chances are that they get a tasting portion dish for an a la carte main course and go to home hungry!

we visit three or four times a year, although it is near a two-hour trip. eating and service is always very good and the relaxed and informal atmosphere of the garden room fits us to the floor. today's visit was absolutely fantastic. not only was eating heavenly; the personal was wonderful and made our visit (my birthday) really special. the staff are always friendly, helpful and welcoming, but they really have gone the extra mile today. we were so impressed. Thank you.

We have just had a 4 night stay at The Cavendish hotel. From the very outset at Check-In we could not fault the standard of service provided all staff were friendly and very efficient. We took all our meals in the Gallery restaurant, where...the standard of food was excellent, although the menu did remain the same throughout our stay. Table service was attentive but not obtrusive. In short, it was very refreshing to stay at a hotel whose combined high standards of food and service are difficult to find these days, particularly in top-price hotels.

we came here 4 times last year and really enjoyed the seafood. this was our first visit this year and unfortunately it was not as good as last year. the menu has significantly reduced, there is no lobster and the plate has reduced to...Keifenfische (for £95). we had crab dressed that was mainly brown meat and for £20 should have been much better. only 2 choices of uninspiring desserts, while before desserts were delicious. really disappointed, as it is such a nice place to eat, especially on a beautiful sunny day, but I fear that this must fit to these trips and it does not definitiw.

If there was a criticism it would be just too much As well as canapés, the amuse bouche, an excellent pea and ham velouté, was pretty much a full on starter! Decent menu choice. Varied wine list. Everything was excellent. (And again I am making...an allowance for some clunky service given the challenges of recruiting well trained staff). My pork main course was very executed, and overall the experience was very good. Hence four blobs Very Good Four out of five should not be regarded as a criticism (I am neither American nor a Millennial In the end I have to reserve five stars for genuine lifetime stand-out restaurants in their genre.

We booked a function room for 13 people for Sunday lunch today, and were unanimously incredibly impressed. We really messed The Cavendish around with last minute changes and drop outs, and the staff there were really accommodating and helpful. The private room that we had...was beautifully decorated and helped to make the occasion feel special. We were all blown away by the food, which was up there with some of the best food we’ve ever had. The service was excellent. We would absolutely recommend The Cavendish, particularly for group bookings and special occasions. In terms of cost to quality ratio, the quality far exceeded the cost.

We dined in the restaurant, having previously done so in the Garden Room which had been disappointing. On this occasion we weren't. The Sunday lunch menu is limited but had some interesting options. As a starter my wife had the dressed crab which at £13...was expensive, but the portion was generous and the food tasty. I had the beef sirloin for the main; it was the best beef I've had in ages (and we do live in Derbyshire We finished off with the lemon posset and chocolate cheesecake both of which were excellent. The service was attentive and friendly, and was well paced. Total bill with service and two rounds of drinks was £125 which we thought was reasonable for what we had. We'd definitely...

We went here on a Monday evening, having booked into the Garden Room. Despite this being the ‘lesser’ of the two restaurants at the hotel, it is still expensive and I expected a certain standard of meal and experience. We found the person serving us...was quite inexperienced and didn’t have the charisma required to head a restaurant by himself. The lighting was dim, with a bulb that kept in cutting in and out, with all staff ignoring it. The room was very cold and if I’d brought a coat I’d of kept it on. The wine I wanted wasn’t available and no drinks menu was offered to find an alternative until I asked for it. The ham hock I had for my starter was fine, but the beef cheek I ordered was co...
