"Our middle son and his family turned up unexpectedly this Sunday and so we decided to go out locally for Sunday lunch. Being such short notice all our usual haunts were fully booked and we didn’t want to go into Chester itself. The only place we could find locally for a traditional Sunday roast was the Piper. Our past experience of the Piper as a pub rather than a restaurant over the last 40 years we have lived in the area was not good. However we’ve noticed it’s been refurbished relatively recently so we decide to risk it. Glad we did. The roast was really excellent, well cooked, good quality tasty ingredients with an unbelievable amount of different vegetables. The prawn and wings starters were good as well. The staff were good efficient and friendly the refurb has also made for a comfortable environment. Value is good too. It’s a four not a five for two issues. One my wife who had the steak pie liked the pastry but thought it should have had more steak. Two the billing doesn’t allow you to put tips on the card, you can only give cash tips. The management needs to sort this fit the benefit of their excellent staff because most people don’t carry much cash with them these days. The Piper should have been full today like all the other local traditional restaurants around here. The fact it wasn’t was our luck. This restaurant certainly on the basis of its Sunday Lunch offering deserves support. In this day and age if you don’t use it you lose it and I think the Piper deserves a better fate."

"We were really disappointed with our experience. We had been looking forward to trying the Bowling Green for quite some time. We booked at table for 6.30. A lovely young man came and took our food and drinks order. The wait for the food was quite long, but that wasn't really the issue. We would have at least expected to get the drinks brought over. After a lengthy wait, we flagged down a different waitress and chased the drinks. The food was brought over, but still no drinks. The food itself was lovely, huge portions and clearly well made. I eventually went to the bar myself to order the drinks, and it was clear that had I not gone up, we wouldn't have got them. When we were finished, the table was cleared but were weren't offered desserts, which seemed unusual, so after a bit of a wait, we asked for the dessert menu, to be told that the kitchen shut at 7.45 it was 8.35 at this point). We were somewhat shocked, not so bothered the kitchen closes, but more surprised that no one mentioned desserts to us sooner, knowing the kitchen closed. When we came to pay, we had been charged for 2 lots of drinks, despite the challenge of getting even one!! This was challenged and removed. The staff were friendly, but it seemed to me that they were young and inexperienced and definitely lacking the mentorship of a manager. It was a shame really because the food was good I can not comment on dessert), and the staff are actually friendly. Sadly, I wouldn't recommend it because good food alone didn't make up for a disappointing experience. We were there for over 2 hours, had one course, and one round of drinks."
