"Starter was bland and tasteless.Absolutely no flavour for smoked salmon patè at all. Toast was cremated. I 'm puzzled why the kitchen or the waitress presenting the food felt it was acceptable to serve it. Had to ask for an edible replacement when a member of staff passed by.. eventually.. as no-one asked if things were ok. It 's not like they were busy as in the hour and a half we were there no other guests were present. Main was ok. Asked for a medium glass of wine they sent and charged a large glass. When we asked for the bill we had been charged for an adult meal for what we thought would be a child 's meal. When we queried the bill we were told we should have asked for a children 's roast, although that was actually offered on the menu and the fact that one guest was an 8 year old I didn 't realise it was necessary to state the obvious, which the lady pointed out.. that apparently we should have specified. We were made to feel uncomfortable and awkward and were obviously the topic of conversation with the staff that could be overheard from the kitchen. It was handled very badly. As a result they deducted a glass of wine and waived the optional service charge which for poor service we had already declined to pay. Too little too late I 'm afraid. If the issues had been dealt with in a polite or amenable manner in the first place we would have maybe reconsidered but the attitude was far from professional and infact unnecessary. Decor was nice but that was about it! Definitely will not be returning or recommending! Prefer the smugglers personally which is practically next door!"

"Here is an exceptionally good chef. Excellent by Central London brasserie standards. The service, however, was woeful. That was not the fault of the staff but rather those who supervise them. My wife and I went out to lunch with our son to celebrate his birthday. We were slightly delayed by the M25 traffic and phoned ahead with our exact arrival time. There was nobody on duty in the restaurant. There was nobody on duty in the bar. After a few minutes a lady, who was eating a sandwich in the bar, broke off her lunch and went into the kitchen to chase someone into action. Apart from one couple we were the only people at the brasserie for lunch. I even had to chase down someone in the adjoining bar to take my money after lunch. The extraordinary thing is that the quality of the cooking and presentation are to the very highest standards. The prices for the fixed 2 or 3 course meals are exceptionally good value. The pheasant terrine to start was excellent. The cod main course was, according to both my son and my wife, fabulous and my beef shin was beyond good. The warm strawberry soufflé was the best I have had for a very long time. My son was in raptures over the chocolate dessert. All in all one of the best meals I have had in England for quite a long time. Why on earth spoil it by inadequate staff training. I do stress that this was not the fault of the young people working there. They were charming and friendly – they just need a little training and/or supervision."

"Really nice seaside pub in St Margaret's Bay, just north of Dover. Drive down the narrow, windy road to the bottom of the village, right by the shore, and there's lots of parking. The pub itself isn't a spectacular building: a plan, rectangular, weather-boarded place with dozens of tables outside and a few inside. Inside isn't much to look at either, to be honest, with a dining area on one side and bar on the other. There are three reasons to come here, though: location, ales and food. The location is a small cove right by the ocean. Waves crash on the rocks nearby. There are bits of white chalk cliffs visible one way. People stroll back and forth on the narrow gravel beach. Ferries departing from Dover just around the corner make their way to France. If the weather is halfway decent there will be large groups of people at the outside tables hoisting pints. It's a really nice spot. They had all the regular lagers and spirits, but I was impressed with their ales. There had a few I'd never heard of. Because I was driving I was only able to try one, the Gravesend Shrimpers Bitter, which I liked a lot. Also, behind the bar they had posted up which guests ales were coming: they showed what was coming next week and what was coming later on. If you lived nearby you could plan your ale-tasting! Food was amazing. Like many seaside pubs they specialise in seafood. My wife had a devilled crab that she said was very tasty. I had some of the lightest, tastiest, most golden fish Hoegaarden batter and chips I've ever had. We didn't have it, but apparently their local cheese plates are renowned [hidden link] . The Sunday lunch that we were there, the dining room was all booked out, which is a good sign. The Coastguard also has the distinction of being the mainland UK pub closest to France. While I was sitting there waiting for my food my phone switched over to a French network. Not the most gorgeous pub to look at, or sit inside. But outside in the sea air, with same fish and some ale: wow."
