"We dined at Bistrot L’Alchimiste on Rue Saint Denis located nearly in the shadow of the 15th century Cathedral (construction of the church began in 1434, on the site of a Romanesque cathedral, and took 457 years to finish! It’s worth a visit while you’re in Nantes) This charming and small restaurant is located on a small side street and could be easily overlooked. It had a great rating on Trip Advisor and looked charming when I checked it out on the walk to my hotel from the Musee d’Arts de Nantes where our art museum association meetings are being held. What more can one ask for than wonderful food, attentive service, and an inventive menu. Everyone in our party started with a local Nantes traditional cheese tarte, which was delectable. My main course of grilled scallops and a local “rouget barbet” or small red mullet, on a bed of quinoa and greens was absolutely delicious. And perfectly prepared. My dinner companions enjoyed a perfect dish of locally raised duck, brochettes of boeuf, and a vegetarian dish that was specially prepared for two of my colleagues who don’t eat meat. The chef could not have been more accommodating. The wine, a local Chinon red, was delightful and amazingly well priced. We enjoyed all three of that evenings dessert choices, split among the six of us, and not a crumb remained on any of the plates! The dining room is intimate, quiet and provides a perfect ambiance for a memorable meal. We knew our choice of a great local culinary experience was spot on when, midway through our meal, a group of ten French colleagues from our conference arrived, including several local residents, who clearly knew the best place to dine in Nantes. A charming night of exquisite culinary memories."

Very good service and nice food - everything was served very tempting and decoratively. The service was excellent, and nice to get wine by glasses to a fair price.

Really cosy place. Everything (even the sides) was super tasty, fresh and very well combined. As for the wine, trust the woman. Amazing knowledge. Will be back for sure.

If you like food and wine and like to be surprised, try this restaurant owned (or directed?) by an oenologue. The food was delicious (I tried the boudin) and the glass of wine (that you do not choose) match perfectly the dishes.Good point on the location as well, near the cathedrale.

Went here (for dinner) as wanted modern French cooking but without the massive price tag and we were very pleased. Small, select menu and everything sounded delicious. We had 3 courses each with wine paring plus a cheese board to share and this came to €140 including tip (in my opinion, very reasonable). The quality of the food was excellent, the portions large and really nice twists on classic dishes. Wine paring was also brilliant and we were given a tour of unusual French wines that really were delicious and pared excellently. Service was extremely attentive and friendly. Lovely decor too. Recommend but make sure you book. When we told our hotel receptionist that we had booked here she se...

"When in Nantes at the last-minute, I used my TA app on my iPhone to find something great near me. I called, and the person I spoke to couldn't have nicer, and said "come on over". I did. The restaurant was virtually empty, despite the fact that a couple of other places I called were booked solid and had no more tables available. The "acceuil" (welcome) couldn't have been nicer. The choices on offer were a fixed formula of 2 entrées, 2 mains, and 2 desserts. I was told that this was as they use only fresh products. I chose a main of cheese/pesto stuffed ravioli with a cream, tomato and cilantro sauce. It arrived quickly, but was maybe room temperature. The hope of fresh cilantro giving a "twist" to the dish, was there, but a bit in the background. I was a bit disappointed, as I couldn't identify the ravioli as being "home-made". In fact, nothing seemed to be fresh/hand chopped, like the tomatoes. I had the bread pudding for dessert, and it arrived also room temperature, was clearly "home-made" with pears, and clearly bread chunks on the top, with a swirl of chocolate for garnish. It was a bit dry, clearly not made very recently, and the inside (where the bread aspect should have been well-infused), was not throughout. The top of the "cake" had hard, dry bread chunks on it. My impression was that perhaps it was a "slow day", and they weren't putting much effort into it by serving something freshly cooked. There was only one other diner in the place. On the other hand, the serveuse could not have been nicer or more helpful. They feature an interesting international, short wine list with everything available by the glass. The dinner menu (on the blackboard on the wall), looked interesting. I think it merits trying again, if they turn on the stove and start serving food hot off the burner, as the interesting menu seasoning is attractive. Great service, but the food was mediocre this day."
