"Dukes is a large eaterie that we discovered on the Friday of our long weekend in Sidmouth. We booked in for Sunday lunch roasts available) but chose instead a couple of bowls of salt, chilli and ginger squid. The squid were predominantly whole baby squid and mighty good with the ginger and soy dipping sauce. A nice addition would have been a wedge of lemon and a sweet chilli dip, more akin to the chilli and spring onion garnish. We followed this with traditional battered cod and chips and a fish pie. Both were good choices but i would like to have seen a greater variety of fish in my pie, rather than just salmon and white fish..some prawns and monkfish for example as the dish was a little pricey at £19. 4 Guys non alco IPA and a cola brought the bill to a slightly expensive £66. The service was however good. Automatic service charging is NOT protocol in Sidmouth as a whole, so my £7 cash tip offering was gratefully recieved by our proficient server. Sidmouth is a very dog friendly village and as such, be prepared to eat alongside our well behaved canine friends."

Management non existent and very slow service. No one seemed to be in charge and they had two people guarding the entrance and not nearly enough serving customers.

We haven’t eaten at The Duke for quite a while but wanted to give it another chance. Wish we hadn’t because the roast beef lunch wasn’t good at all. The only warm thing on the plates were the potatoes, while the meat and veg was all very cool.

What a find, a great place for a meal. The staff were friendly and the service was excellent. The food was very good and great value for money. We were hoping to eat there for a second time but unfortunately storm Ciaran had other plans for us. Would definitely re visit. Visualizza piatti

I'm happy we made a reservation as this restaurant seemed to be quite popular. The menu offers a variety of dishes to cater to different tastes, and the prices are reasonable. We visited on a Thursday night, which happens to be curry night, and we even got a free dessert.

We visited this restaurant over the bank holiday weekend. It's advisable to make a reservation in advance, but we managed to get a table without one. We did have to wait for an hour for the kitchen to prepare the next batch of food, but we understood the delay. The highlight of our meal was the delicious Seafood Chowder. However, the rest of the dishes were just average.

The waitress was lovely and efficiant. That is where the good parts end. The food was only just passable, i had Hake my partner had Plaice. Both were tasteless. Portion size was very small, not worth the price. will never be back. Then to finish they refused to accept my money (cash). I will not be bullied into having only one way to pay. I paid cash. Then went to the chip shop as we were still hungry. My advise is to avoid this place like the plague. Visualizza piatti

After braving Storm Ciaran, we braved a dreary Thursday evening in Sidmouth. Despite two failed attempts at finding a place to eat, we finally stumbled upon Dukes. We were pleasantly surprised to find a couple of free tables and were warmly greeted upon entering. The menu had a great selection of dishes, and we ultimately decided on the fish pie and mussels. Both dishes were delicious and served in generous portions. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and found the staff to be friendly. While I hadn't planned on leaving a review, I felt compelled to share that our experience at Dukes was far from the negative reviews I had read.

We made a mistake by calling in at lunchtime for coffee and cakes, as they were really busy so we expected to wait. The drinks arrived, but we had almost finished by the time the cakes were served. We suggested to the waitress that it may be good to explain if there was going to be a delay with the food and perhaps the drinks could be ordered a bit later. The food and drinks were extremely good quality. The manager came to our table, he immediately understood and offered a compromise. The situation was resolved with quiet professionalism, great communication and excellent customer service. Lovely place, good atmosphere, I would definitely recommend and would not hesitate to return.

"We had two dinners and breakfast from this restaurant because we stayed in the Home Farm Hotel. We wanted to have the dinner and breakfast during our stay, but had to cancel our plans due to VERY POOR customer service received from Richard and also...because of his wife's cooking due to overcooked and burned full cook breakfast we received from the restaurant. Day 1, Richard introduced his wife to us, but she totally ignored us and in addition, she did not even bother to acknowledged and smiled with us. She seems to be very upset or very distance from everything or stressed/fed up about something at the time. Not sure this was due to over working… Day 1, Richard requested us to come down stairs for the dinner at 18:00, but instead of taking us to the restaurant for dinner, he tried his best to hard sell the alcohols he had in the bar to us and also to all the other guests. This happened even after we told him several times that we only want the meal and no alcohol from his bar. After about two hours, I had to tell him that I’m a diabetic and heart patient therefore I do really want to eat the meal and have a rest. He gave us the menu and I asked for lamb which was on the menu and he went crazy and said to us that they do not provide English food in this restaurant. I showed him what was on the menu, but he did not even apologise to us. He said lamb run out and asked us to select something else from the menu, again we selected duck, but that was run out as well!!! By then, Richard was sarcastic and rude to us as well as to other guests… In the end, we asked what we can have for our dinner. He almost shouted at us saying he and his wife only there to run the hotel without any staff therefore, we have to eat whatever his wife can cook!!! Finally, at about 21:00, we managed to have our dinner and I asked Richard to cancel our breakfast and dinner booking for the rest of the days however, he said we have to take the breakfast for next day because it was too late to cancel it. Next morning (Day 2), we were near the restaurant since 08:00 as Richard requested but as usual, past 09:00 we received burnt and overcooked full breakfast for two of us. They had a very large menu but it seems like most of the food either his wife did not know how to cook or had run out. Richard charged full price for our meals, BUT he FORGOT to provide the good quality food and services to the customers…"
