"The restaurant is cleverly designed, with it's casual surroundings much in accordance with the latest fad which is supposed to create a relaxed atmosphere of sophisticated coolness . I found amusing the old suitcases springing out of the wall and momentarily enjoyed concentrating on the collection of postcards attached around one of the pillars in the dining area. Although it was lunch time, the restaurant was almost completely empty. Two ladies which had taken their seats around a near-by table fragments of seconds just ahead of us, left the premises hastily after the exact amount of three minutes. Only the adjacent booth to ours was occupied by an elderly lady and her vivacious -i guess- granddaughter, industriously absorbed in colouring a book. To our great chagrin we found out, only too late, the main reason for such depressing desolation. The restaurant was not anymore in the habit of serving alcohol to patrons. Alcohol and pork were totally banned, one's favourite ice-cream would never be served again affogato in rum and goodbye hog roast. At that point we were a bit tired and much too hungry, and rain kept falling outside with a rhythm that did not encourage any further explorations in the upcoming area of exotic Bermondsey, so we put on a good face and remained seated. It's true what they say, the more you can't have what you want, the more you want it. I acquiesced to drinking plain mineral water, while my palate was crying out -silently- for a pint of cold lager. Anyway. We had liver on toast, fish fillets, burgers with chunky chips and hot brownies with vanilla ice-cream and strawberries. What a delicious meal it was. When served our food had a certain air of confidence about it, as a direct reflection of a kitchen that knows what is doing and what the kitchen is doing is a very good job. If you like liver, this is definitely a plate to sample, delicate and earthy at the same time, flavorful beyond belief. Fish was succulent, fragrant, delicate, aesthetically beautifully presented. As much as I greatly admire the out-of-scratch creation/invention of bright new, phantasmagorically fancy plates, with extravagant ingredients and all the rest, I reserve greater respect though for someone who manages to infuse such a great taste to something as simple, as long-established and as aged as a hamburger. There is nothing truly special about a burger, it's a bun cut in two slices which contain a patty of ground meat. Big deal. But making something already in circulation for at least one hundred years taste that great, well, this is what breaths truth into culinary art. There's just something absolutely visceral, which takes one back to atavistic primal instincts, about holding a bun between one's own hands and biting into a succulent patty of ground beef as fresh onion rings and ketchup try to drip down and soil ones expensive tailor-made trousers;wouldn't really recommend it as a meal to eat on a first date with an elegantly gentle, born and raised in Mayfair, girl. But as neither of us was a girl, let alone from Mayfair, we relished our burgers with great gusto. This happened to be one of the best medium/rare burgers I have ever tasted in the UK (the States and Argentina are a different kettle of fish). As a result to being the only patrons in an otherwise empty restaurant, staff, though slightly unmotivated, seemed only to eager to help, thus the service was overall very good. Would I return to a place which doesn't serve alcohol, even though the food was excellent? Well, it is all about choices, isn't it? Although we might live in a society spoiled by and overindulged in choices, I firmly believe that the more choices people are able to consciously make, the happier and more stable society appears, at least to my innocent eyes. In consequence I make the choice never to returning to BG."
