"We stopped here after skiing at about 4pm for a drink. Service was friendly and we decided to stay for food. The restaurant was fully booked but they managed to squeeze us in as long as we left the table for a certain time. This...worked well and we didn’t feel rushed. The wienerschnitzel was very nice. So was the soup. Definitely book ahead."

Restaurant Nummer 1 in St. Johann. Perfekt gute Küche mit toller Auswahl. Der Wirt ist ein Pongauer Original mit deftiger aber freundlicher Aussprache. Am Abend unbedingt reservieren.

This restaurant was next to our hotel. The owner was always there and was wonderful to all his guests. He and his staff where friendly, accommodating and the establishment is very reasonable. We went back many times for just a drink or a full meal...for 6.

"We went to the Steakhaus Rauchkuchl based on previous reviews. We were staying just up the hill so it was only a two minute walk from the hotel. There is no doubt about the theme of this restaurant as once you've entered it's like an all American rodeo show! We arrived around 8.30pm on the Saturday night and were surprised that there were only a few tables occupied. We sat in the smaller non-smoking section but could've sat on the adjoining outside terrace if we so wished. We were given a nice, courteous welcome by the waiter. The menu has a decent selection so it's ok for someone who prefers something other than beef!We ordered a camembert starter to share. It came with some lovely lightly toasted baguette style bread and is definitely worth a go. For the main meal my wife ordered a Steaktoast - lots of small steak pieces covering a lightly toasted slice of bread. Not keen on garlic sauce she asked to swap for the cocktail sauce which the waiter was happy to agree to. This was more like what we'd call a ranch dressing - not at all a cocktail sauce you get with prawns in the UK.Myself, I went for a proper steak, the 350g (14oz) Rib Eye. This was perfectly cooked to Medium rare as ordered and was simply excellent. The waiter suggested a Jack Daniels sauce to accompany the steak and he was right, they went very well together. A nice side salad was part of the meal and I ordered an extra side of big fat chips - well what's a steak without the chips? As it was our last night in Austria we thought we'd sign off with a traditional Apfel Strudel. Unfortunately this did not match our expectations as clearly it was not freshly made and was quite stodgy. We had eaten Strudel earlier on our holiday so knew how good it could be! Nevertheless we polished it off and ended the meal very satisfied overall. If we went back again though we'd probably give the dessert a miss. After settling the bill we wandered back to the hotel where it dawned on me that I'd left my mobile phone on one of the seats back at the restaurant. Luckily the waiter had found it and kept it safe for me. Vielen Dank!"

"It's unusual to find a Chinese restaurant on a skiing holiday. But there it was, on the top floor of the shopping centre in St Johann. And after a week of very nice Austrian food I fancied a change. It's very modern in appearance. Well, it's a concrete box in a concrete block. So nothing in the way of charm or Gemütlichkeit. But frankly after a week in Austria I had had about as much pine cladding and stuffed animals as I could take. The Austrians at the next table weren't having anything to do with the rice bowl and chopsticks on offer though. Here's the deal. It's an all you can eat buffet for just under 15€. I think they have a time limit if they are busy, or if you are eking out a single glass of cola while eating your own weight in fried rice. It wasn't busy, and this didn't affect us at all. Starters at one end. Main courses at the other. That staple of Chinese cooking, sushi, round the corner. They bill themselves as an Asiatic Buffet - I saw quite a few Thai dishes on the menu, though not in the buffet tonight. Well, the starters were pretty bland. Tiny spring rolls and samosas. Deep fried prawns and veggies. Crispy won ton. None of it tasted of very much at all. Help yourself to a little bowl of sweet and sour sauce, or what the waitress called garlic sauce but was I think hoi sin. It still didn't taste of very much. Certainly not garlic. My wife went for the soup and reckoned it was a big improvement on the other starters. The sushi and sashimi weren't anything stunning but did taste of something other than deep fried batter. Help yourself to pickled ginger and wasabi sauce and I defy anyone to say this is bland. Main courses. Egg fried rice or noodles - one after the other, or both at once if you like. Then heap on whatever they have on display. This was a huge improvement on the starters. I particularly liked the Szechuan duck, but I tried a little of everything and liked it all. I suspect they probably swap the dishes around a bit so it might be different things tomorrow. Lots of umame tingles - we don't get a lot of monosodium glutamate in the UK these days, perhaps because of food sensitivities. They had slices of orange and tinned lychee for sweet. I passed up on the deep fried apple and banana. I'd certainly go again but would probably skip the starters next time."
