"this is a village pub with accommodation. we had the apartment in loft and it was huge! it was nice to return from one day and to put on the boiler and to cool one in front of the television a little from home. we had dinner at night and had a reserved table as a room. the eating was not bad, but there is something space for improvement. the breakfast is served in a first floor dining/functional room and there is a good choice, again there was something over cooked, so could be improved. the staff is great, nothing is too much annoyed and it is very friendly. the quiz on Thursday night is a must, we loved it. the location is great for the opposite to see and staveley itself is a beautiful village with hawkshead brewery and a beautiful caffe. I would recommend a stay here."

Awful food. Soggy chips and fish and veg burger had grit in it. Wouldn't recommend. Wasn't even offered a refund

A grand old lady of the area and well worth a visit. A very good range of beers plus and extra-ordinary interior of odd collectables hanging from the ceiling. And an open fire too !

We had the Roast Pork Roast Beef Sunday Lunches. Very well cooked very tasty, with a good selection of Vegetables. In addition, the Staff were very welcoming, polite friendly. We will return !

Lovely rooms, spotlessly clean, excellent breakfast and very friendly helpful staff, what more could you want! The riverside seating area is really lovely on a sunny afternoon. Also had a great dinner there, would recommend a visit.

welcoming country pub with immaculate, comfortable rooms, hot water whispers in the bathroom with good shower and excellent dining served in the bar. the breakfast options were varied with a lot to eat for hungry hikers. many nice going close, so hopefully we will be back too long.

characterful pub, the front beer garden is a beautiful location with views of the river. there is a very good beer selection with local ales. I think they have something to do with eating, nothing is true, but nothing really special. great place for a pint after a walk. dogs allowed

Stayed here after a day of walking at Braithwaite. To be honest, I wasn't expecting or even looking for much, but was really impressed with the warm atmosphere, excellent food, and selection of ales and beers. The breakfast was particularly tasty. The room we stayed in was very clean and recently decorated, and the service we received throughout our stay was excellent. Cracking stuff!

delicious, but expensive. I had the Moroccan lamb with sweet potato and quinoa. tender, juicy, spicy, fragrant, delicious! the part was simply nice for my Asian appetit, which means that it is a bit too little for those who need more. my wife had the little fish and chips, and she loved the very fresh haddock. the quantity is about the same as my Moroccan lamb, which means that those who need better order the larger portion.

Booked a table for my dad’s birthday with family as we offen do. Have been going for years and have always had lovely food. I ordered the special, Lamb Henry for just under £20. What I got was a large salad bowel full of sauce (soup) couldn’t see the lamb and was served with mash which dissolved in a couple of minutes and no other veg. Looked so terrible that I sent it straight back (something I never do) and asked for another meal. Was told I could order something else but would have a long wait! Didn’t bother ordering anything as everyone would have finished theirs. Terrible experience and unfortunately won’t go back. Sad as I had always loved the pub and even worked there for 4 years

"Staff were very friendly, welcoming and efficient. They were also very kind to our dog. We had drinks and food and though the drinks were good, the food was not. The words 'frozen ' and 'microwave ' were forefront in my mind throughout. The mash potato I had with my pie was face meltingly hot suggesting the microwave was used, and my wife 's battered fish was mushy and watery suggesting it was deep fried from frozen. The batter was also only about 1mm thick and was like wise mushy. The meat in my chunky steak pie was definatly chunky but was a little too firm (not tough, just not tender. Probably the wrong cut of meat rather than badly cooked). I then had the caramel apple pie as did another member of my party. While his was hot, mine was cold. I had mine with cream which when it arrived, had bubbles in and was luke warm. What I think happened was that mine was microwaved first and then drowned in cream and left to sit while the other was microwaved. This mean mine cooled in the cream while the cream warmed. It also meant that the pastry on the bottom went soggy, and from the rest of the pastry, it didn 't seem like it had much crisp to begin with. Now I know that times are hard and pubs like this can 't be expected to make everything from scratch, but there are 3 other pubs close by and unfortunately this one is doing nothing to stand out from the others, in terms of food anyway. Overall, a nice place for a quiet drink, but I 'll not be back for the food. The only saving grace was the price; £80 for 2 rounds of drinks (1 pint, 1 coke and 2 halves per round), 4 mains and 2 desserts...I suppose you get that you pay for though..."
