"During Jim Heaton's time, The Last Inn in Hengoed was a traditional village pub known for its excellent beer, delicious food, and inviting atmosphere. While the new owners have made some changes over the years, they have managed to maintain the pub's original charm, with the unfortunate exception of removing the real fire. Recently, the pub underwent renovations, swapping out the cozy wood panels for a brighter sage green and white color scheme. However, this change has altered the atmosphere drastically, making it feel empty and lacking warmth. Service was subpar, with a new and inexperienced waiter who made mistakes with our orders. The food was hit or miss, with some dishes being acceptable while others, like the Sunday roast, were bland and disappointing. The atmosphere has also taken a hit, with the pub now frequented by unsavory characters in tracksuits glued to the Sky Sports TV. Overall, I hope the new management can work on improving the atmosphere, service, and food quality to restore The Last Inn to its former glory. However, until then, I will not be returning."

I visited The Last Inn on June 15th, 2023. The food was top-notch for a local pub. I tried their homemade steak pie and it was absolutely delicious! The prices were reasonable, and despite the slow service (due to 3 staff members being off sick), the staff were apologetic and attentive. I will definitely be returning. Visualizza piatti

Food was amazing! Homemade chips!! Something for everyone. I booked beforehand and discussed my pain in the bum dietary restrictions and Jeremy made me salmon, not on the menu at all! The best salmon I’ve ever had. Lovely warm atmosphere. Kids were welcomed. Beer garden looks fab- must come back when it’s not a rainy October night! Thank you

Over the years this pub has suffered from poor management, and the potential is great, but I’m pleased to say, the new landlord is getting things on track. I call in for a meal, and was blown away by the price, service, quality, and size of the portions. You certainly need to book, as it’s becoming very popular. It’s dog friendly, and welcomes families. Back to its best.

We called ahead to inquire about staying in our T4 camper van in the restaurant's car park. We were told that it was allowed. Upon arrival with our dog, we were greeted warmly and made to feel very welcome. The bar staff was friendly, and we enjoyed a delicious meal at a great price, accompanied by a bottle of wine. Everyone we interacted with was extremely friendly. We will definitely be returning for a meal and overnight stay when in the area. Visualizza piatti

Driving through Shropshire en route to Glastonbury festival we came across The Last Inn, we rang ahead to see if we could park our campervan in the car park overnight and Jeremy and Karen were most accommodating, after a drink and a chat Jeremy showed us around the pub which is delightful and quaint with a lovely refurbished function room, we had a great night drinking and chatting to the locals, retiring to our van for a great nights sleep, the only shame was that we didn't have time to stay for sunday lunch which smelled incredible as we pulled away, we will definitely return!

We were travelling in our campervan from a trip to Northumberland and needed a place to stop over and have something to eat. We checked online and found a great review and of The Last Inn and decided to check the place out. We asked a member of staff if we could stay in the car park and before we could even offer some sort of recompense for letting us stay, they agreed and welcomed us in the pub. They had stopped serving food as it was 9 o'clock on a Sunday evening, but Karen Jeremy offered and ordered us a curry, then had it delivered, and let us use their plates and cutlery. We then spent the next couple of hours chatting and drinking with the locals, meeting their highly entertaining and...

"Beautifull hotel, I guess one can call it trendy , but I just don 't understand how they can justify the price £130/night and that most of the time will go to £160 as they run out of entry level ones. So I guess the answer is there because people pay for it! But let 's just make some relevant comparisons Birmingham Grand literally in the heart of the city, brand new, 5* hotel, with all recently decorated rooms to the highest standard is £135 15 for breakfast. Needless to say rooms are air conditioned, fully equipped and genuinelly very posh. Hotel has lifts, has porters and the service is top notch. The Lion is barelly 4* just for trendiness alone, but the actual quality of furnishing is closer to 3*, has no lift and you will be lugging your bags up and down mutiple flights of stairs (and I mean multiple like 8 going up and down) trought narrow corridors to mediocre room (nothing wrong with it just mediocre) which isn 't even air conditioned. Sorry, I just don 't get it. That said restaurant is good fully fine dining if you are into it. Althought in my oppinion it doesn 't fit into the rest of the hotel. So it is ~3.5* hotel which is very youghtfull and trendy and then you get 5* fine dining with very tiny portions for the dinner (which is not criticism of restaurant, it is very good on it 's own). In conclussion I just don 't get what niche this hotel is filling, who stays there and why. The price for the rooms should be £75 95 tops. Shreesbury is not exactly prime tourists destination either (at least shouldn 't). But it seems it is working out for them, I just would not recommend it, I would not stay in it again and it is definatelly not worth the price. Neither in isolation, nor in comparison."
