"We had been to this pub for lunch in the past but had found the food better at the Black Bull just down the road. We recently returned to the Black Bull but were disappointed (apparently Tuesdays are the chef 's day off so cooking is done by bar staff). So today we returned to the Red Lion and were very happy with our visit. The website says 'under new ownership ' and does not have much information yet so we went in hope rather than expectation. We found the landlord was very welcoming and pleasant and our fish and chips were really exceptional. Incredibly light batter on an excellent piece of fish, with lovely chips and mushy peas. Dessert was good, and the service prompt. We hope the new owner does well, with food like this he deserves to succeed."

Lovely fish meal served by Mo. We were meeting friends later and had dinner before our friends arrived. All very nice, since the new ownership.

This pub restaurant is a delight. In a nice Essex village, plenty parking. The manager, Mohammed, was fantastic. Nice menu, well presented food, great bar with hand pulled ales. I would love to go back.

We waited an hour and ten minutes for the food. The lady who served us was very rude and abrupt. We were also not told what items were not available on the menu until we were about to order. She then got annoyed when one of us had to choose again. The food was ok but for the price I would expect much better and more friendly service.

We ordered fish and chips plus a veg pie( the only veg option on the menu) for lunch. The fish batter was soggy and it tasted like the oil was rancid for that and the chips. The veg pie pastry top was soggy and the filling was minimal. I returned the fish and ordered a sandwich which was ok The carpet in the pub is filthy and the outside area badly managed

We visited today after being recommended. I honestly have to say it was the worst roast I have ever had. The beef was so thick and tough, served with anaemic roast potatoes, frozen veg and Aunt Bessie yorkshires, served luke warm on a cold plate. So disappointing. The surroundings inside looked grubby needed a lot refurbishment, and the carpet was black with ground in dirt.

Very nice hostelry on the old A12 at Margaretting. We stopped for a midweek lunch. A fairly compact menu of pub favourites, all generous portions and reasonably priced. There were other non-pub favourites available dishes available. There were several draught lagers on the bar, but disappointingly only 2 ales, Timothy Taylors Landlord and Green King IPA, shame there wasn`t a local brew as well. Good pub with a warm welcome..

We were regular diners here prior to Covid but haven 't got back in the habit since with the new owners mainly due to the lunchtime snack menu disappearing.. On a rare recent visit i was persuaded by Mo (front of house and bar) that my wife and i should try the Wednesday Pie Night . So we gave it a try. Unbelievable value for a large pie and a pint (of Abbot) for £12.50, and would you believe we even found the portions too generous for us!!!

Please provide for vegetarians, you had nothing to offer my family. The food is average but thr service is shocking. The male owner needs to wear appropriate clothing and stop wearing his flip flops and stained jogging bottoms, his wife (I believe) was rude and had no explanation as to why they didn't have anything available on the menu. I used to come here alot but since this visit we haven't been back and we won't be. Ps- no one wants to see your toes when your trying to eat.

"I was appalled at the quality of service from the moment I arrived to the moment I left, which was about When I arrived I was not asked if I would like a drink, and I wasn't asked throughout the whole meal. The waitress should have seen on the table that we only had tap water, and asked whether we'd like another drink. Then, we ordered our first round of hot food. I pressed the help button and after waiting for a good minutes for the waitress finally arrived. I felt it was too long. At this point in the evening there were three full tables in the whole restaurant so I thought the amount of time we had to wait was poor. Then the food started coming over, but the food didn't come altogether. A couple of dishes came and then a few more and a few more after that. This meant we didn't all eat together, we ate all at different times. I had ordered two dishes to eat at the same time and they didn't arrive at the same time. Very disappointing. The third order of hot food was beyond a joke. It was clear that one of the two waitress wasn't feeling very well (I overheard one of the chef's telling her to go home). She was our waitress. So, we ordered the third round of hot food. minutes later we still didn't have our food. In this time the chef was talking to the ill waitress. I then pressed the help button and I explained that we'd ordered some food and had been waiting a rather long time. I then look round at the waitress and chef and it was absolutely clear that the order didn't go through so it was only then that the food was starting to be cooked. The waitress who took the order explained that there's been lots of issues and she was sorry. As a customer paying for a meal, I don't care about the issues, I still expected good service and my food to turn up. Overall I thought the service was absolutely terrible. I will not be visiting this restaurant again and I will not be recommending the restaurant to anyone."
