"We had booked with booking.com . On arrival we were told that we didn't get breakfast included and that it would be £15 a head. We accepted this although thought was pretty steep for breakfast in a pub.The first morning we were given a menu clearly stating that breakfasts were included with all accommodation. I ordered poached eggs with smoked salmon and the other two ordered a full English breakfast which included homemade black pudding. The breakfasts arrived ,one of my poached eggs was runny, the other hard. The English breakfasts had no black pudding on the plates and when queried we were told that the deliveries hadn't arrived. Doesn't homemade imply made on or near the premises and as the owner states he is a butcher by trade I would expect he had made the black pudding. No alternatives were offered and presentation was distinctly lacking , with the baked beans poured over the other items. The next day I risked the full breakfast with black pudding which was lovely. But again the others had badly cooked poached eggs. We were offered no fruit juice, cereal or even toast and marmalade. On leaving we discovered the pub was unmanned , despite poor mobile signal. The owner turned up after 15 minutes. The bill was handed over, charging us for seven breakfasts when we had six, it was adjusted after he asked if one of us had had two breakfast one day? He served and cooked them so should know the answer to that. We were also then overcharged for nine coffee when three coffees and two teas had been ordered. Having had a family B and small hotel in York I advised him that standards were not what I was used to. I spoke to someone who had also visited recently and she stated a member of staff had charged them £15 per head for their similar breakfast where we were charged the menu price. Exceptionally poor menu, inaccurate advise saying breakfast included then charging us and probably the worst breakfast I have eaten in similar accommodation."

The place is small and friendly but the menu choice was also small and a couple of the specials off the list so little choice especially for one of our party who has a seafood allergy.

We came for Sunday lunch here today! Really enjoyed the pub. Great atmosphere and lovely staff. We had starters and the beef Sunday lunch which was cooked to our liking. We asked for more gravy which was quickly brought to our table. Visualizza piatti

Atmosphere: nice village pub, busy on a Friday night. Bar and restaurant areas both full. Staff: friendly and efficient Food: decent pub food, nice to see some multicultural menu as well as traditional dishes. Portions large. Price: about right for the quality and setting.

Small pub on road down to river nice reliable food including very large sausage and mash with gravy which is definitely worth trying. Nice atmosphere small garden at back. Always busy so need to book tables inside outside tables first come. Upstairs seating also available (not obvious)! Decent range of wines.

A group of us stayed in Gilling West for a week we twice dined at the White Swan. The food was delicious and the service friendly. Our one niggle was seeing the burger night advertised on the main menu for £10, yet when we went it was actually £12.50, nor was the range of beers available. However, we still enjoyed the burgers. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meal at White Swan and couldn't believe the quality of the food for such a reasonable price. I had fish of the day while my partner had the cygnature burger. Neither of us could pass up Gilling Mess for dessert. Accompanied by a nice bottle of Rose, we had a very pleasant evening. The staff were polite and efficient making the whole experience excellent.

One positive note, the pub is situated in a lovely location, very close to the wedding barn and walking but.... Sadly on a recent stay it was not so positive. Parking could be an issue as there is no official pub car park, it is on the road side or in a bay opposite. On checking in we were shown to our room, up a metal staircase and along a metal balcony, if you 're unsteady on your feet, elderly or have a disability this would be a problem and not so safe if you have had one too many! We asked if the sofa bed could be made up, but after a struggle the lady couldn 't do it so went for the manager who did it for us. If we had have left the bed until our return, then it would have been 3 in a...

"We arrived frazzled because we drove around the grounds in the dark not knowing where to go. The signage inside the grounds is no help at all. Allow time for this if you haven't been before. Fortunately we had because we wanted a pre dinner drink in the bar before we ate. Even when we did arrive we weren't sure if we had arrived at the back entrance because we stood for ages with no welcome or acknowledgement. A very disappointing start to our evening. When someone did come they didn't take our coats. We went through to the snug for a drink. They gave us menus and went away. Later came back for our order. We got our drinks and ordered our food. Then very quickly afterwards we were asked to go through to the restaurant. We had only had a couple of sips of our drinks and it was still prior to the time we had actually booked our table for (7.30pm). We felt rushed. The food came and was fabulous. I had the beetroot starter which had beautifully cooked beetroots and some pickles. It also had a grain through it. I couldn't remember what the grain was so asked a member of staff. She didn't know so went away to ask and came back saying it was probably buckwheat....probably! My main was pork belly with parsnip and an apple reduction. The pork could have been cooked a little longer. I think belly needs to be very well cooked until really soft. The top skin was impossible to cut through as it was not crisp, I couldn't eat it. A steak knife would have helped. Having said that it was still a good dish which could have been excellent. We had sides of mashed potato and greens with pickles both superb. The presentation of both dishes was innovative and inviting. Portion size was good too not tiny portions of fiddled with food which I much prefer. The service was not as polished as the food. There was no obvious manager and we had different servers which is never quite as good as one for the entire meal. The servers were scruffy not appropriate for such a lovely building. Overall it was OK but could have been superb with more attention to some details. Service: 2 Location: 3"
