"Our first real meal in Munich came practically at the end of the day. We'd spent the majority of the afternoon touring Staatliches Hofbräuhaus, and between the tour and travel time, it was early evening by the time we returned to Marienplatz. I was determined to give the Christmas market my undivided attention with more time to explore, so we purposely ignored most of the stalls (as much was possible, at least) as we scanned the restaurants dotted around the square. We chose Zum Spöckmeier based on their menu, and the fact that we could see empty tables from the entryway. We took a table closer to the back and were met by our waiter. First order of business was ordering a beer, which was the Superior Festbier. For dinner, I chose the beef goulash and my husband went with the filetpfandl vom schwein (pork filet, mushrooms in cream, vegetables and Käsenudeln). The food came out quickly, which we both truly appreciated; we were starving after missing breakfast and lunch. Everything was fresh and flavorful, and we had more than enough food to fill us up, without making us feel like we'd overdone it. The beef goulash had a wonderful hearty flavor, and the meat was perfectly cooked. It was served with a small portion of rice like pasta (not orzo, it was a bit heftier than that). My husband loved his meal, as well and I admit to snagging more than a couple forkfuls of the cheese noodles. It was like the most luxurious mac and cheese you'd ever had! Our waiter became friendlier as the evening wore on. And at the end of the meal, he basically told us we needed to try their house made schnapps. He would *not* take no for an answer (we tried. Twice) and came back out with two bottles of their 50 proof schnapps for us to consume. At 6 euro a pop, I can see why he did it, but I didn't like feeling forced into buying them. My husband later claimed he agreed to them, but I know him well enough to know he wouldn't order hard liquor for me without asking first. At any rate, my husband ended up discovering a new found love of true schnapps, and the waiter made his schnapps sell (and thank goodness he finally did relent when we said no to his offer to bring out another round of schnapps)."
