"The four of us visited Au Doyen for lunch in mid-July.We were welcomed warmly and well looked after throughout. We were given olives, water and bread straightaway. Why can't all restaurants do that without fuss? We had high hopes for the seafood being barely 20 yards from the sea and we were not disappointed.For starters three of us shared the Poele de Poisson having been warned that one would be too much for one person. There was more than enough for three and the combination of shrimp, calamari, octopus and squid was absolutely delicious. The other in our party had the mussels in garlic and bread combs. Again a large, piping hot serving and delicious. For the main course one of us had the fish of the day - seabream. Served with rice and and ratatouille. It was excellent. One of us had the bouillabaisse which was absolutely out of this world. Another of the party had the octopus which came with penne pasta; an odd combination but it worked. We had a couple of dry white wine and two beers. It all came to around €150.Possibly the best lunch we've had in Provence this year. The beautiful setting, the sea the sunshine and the friendly service all enhanced the experience. But the food was magnificent on it's own; and we've certainly had enough mediocre quayside meals to know the difference. Service was prompt and our waiter was friendly, keen to chat through the the lunch without being invasive. We can't recommend highly enough. Negatives? The toilet is just one tiny room. A highly relaxed atmosphere and undoubtedly one of the very best places for lunchtime seafood in Marseilles."

Great moules frites made a la minute. Best this season :) Fun staff, nice location in the old harbor and petit train Marseille.

A few years after our last stop by, Au Doyen is still great and good, a good alchemy between relax but professional atmosphere. See you next time ;)

A nice little café in the old port of Marseille, with shaded outdoor seating looking out over the myriad of boats crammed into the port. Great for coffee/beer/soft drinks. Good service.

Bouillabaisse, fish soup, fisherman's stew, it doesn't matter what you call it but my wife wanted to understand the dish that turned Julia Child into a cook. Order it, and for goodness sake google how to eat it before digging in. It's a complex procedure, but worth it. The one we had here was more than enough food (neither of us finished) and plent yummy. This restaurant is in the pavement. We went to enter from crossing the road. Immediately the manager started shouting in French about it being restaurant, not a passage and that we could not walk through it! Well it had an entrance/exit from the street. Great first impression. We had been looking for somewhere to have a snack but immediately turned round and walked away.

... and to go when you are looking for a good place to eat on the harbor front. The boss very involved made sure that our family of 5 was well seated and that our young son of 5 would enjoy his lunch. Both food and service were excellent and the price totally reasonable.We enjoyed particularly the seafood and the French fries which were amazing.We realized that there were many usual guests and some were very typical drinking their wine in the sun behind their shades.We had a great lunch!
