"We like tea and cake. No doubt about it. We've taken Afternoon Tea in all sorts of places. The most prestigious hotel in London yes. One of the most popular English stately homes yes. A brasserie in a provincial English city yes....But the best Afternoon Tea of all? You have to go to Wigan for that! Admittedly the posh end of Wigan Mrs Lyon's Tea Room in Standish. It's delightfully homely, with a choice of teas; a choice of freshly made sandwiches; scones still warm from the oven, and a choice of cake ranging from the traditional Victoria sponge to interesting concoctions involving Ferrero Rocher. Superb. Three of us met for tea at Mrs Lyon's everything was perfectly chintz. In a good way. If I was entertaining visitors from abroad, Mrs Lyon's is the kind of place I'd take them to, to prove that whatever the country is going through there are still little pockets of sanity! The service was excellent: attentive but not intrusive. Extra clotted cream to go with the scones? Certainly! At the end of our visit when I paid at the counter, I congratulated the two young women who had served us: it was an excellent tea. Hearing the praise, another lady popped her head through the serving hatch from the kitchen (Was this The Real Mrs Lyon She beamed! As did a young lad who was assisting her. If this was a family operation, it was even more praiseworthy. Of all the places in England I've had Afternoon Tea, this is the one that I will return to. Long may they continue!"

Myself and two friends came today. I've never done an Afternoon Tea before but I really enjoyed it. Gorgeous vintage style teapots and plates etc. Cake to die for. Lovely experience

I received an email from them asking what date they would like, because it was not coming through them that I said on Saturday, the 13th to answer thank you for always...back to us. Saturday has come and I emailed them asking which time they will fall off, so I can distract the woman as there was a Valentine's gift to an email back I regret that we can do

Had lunch here with my friend, counter area was clean and cakes were shown well. On walking into cafe would have liked a hello or acknowledgement. We sat in the back area of room, the waitress was friendly when taking our order. Decor needs updating...and the lace curtains were full of grey dust ! Lots of cobwebs hanging from the ceiling and walls. The food was okay, overall I would probably give the overall experience, 2 out of 5.

Visited tea room with my sister from Canada with a voucher I received for Christmas. Welcome wasn't overly friendly and we were not shown to our table which was around the corner a very tight squeeze. Cakees displayed looked nice. The food am afraid wasn't...visually presentable and I had a plate full of green salad and tiny blog of coleslaw. Average falafel. On viewing the decor it was very drab and needs updating. Lots of hanging cobwebs and curtains need a clean. On the whole I would not return.

Went with friends. Difficult for parking around the area. Nice decor inside. We had a table near the window. I like that you could choose sandwiches on the day and they were freshly made. We had scones and then could choose a slice of cake....I had chocolate cake and it was huge. I probably would have preferred a selection of tiny cakes, but I suppose they were going for something different than the usual afternoon teas. I struggled to eat the cake as it was slightly dry and just too much. However, did enjoy the experience and didn’t feel rushed. Staff were lovely. Could have been slightly more attentive, checking if we needed more drinks etc, as we had to ask a couple of times, but would re...

As soon as we had are wedding date confirmed are first job was to secure are date with Mrs Lyons tea room to make are wedding cake. Throughout the planning process Elaine Lyon and Vickie were fantastic. Working with are ideas to make and design...are perfect wedding cake. They came up with putting flowers around the cake and using some of the bridesmaids material to tie all the colours and design in. We were not disappointed the cake exceeded are expectations and tasted amazing. We went for fruit and lemon and elderflower both went down well. Put it this way I was left with one piece of the lemon and only a small portion of the fruit cake(excluding the top tier) I fully recommend Vickie and...

"After reading the reviews we was really looking forward to eating here ,however it turned out to be the worst tapas and worst service we have ever received . After waiting 10 minutes for someone to take our drinks order we then waited a further 30 mins to be served with what can only be described as toast with tasteless mushed up tomatoes on , this was inedible and hardly touched , a further 20 minutes on and we was served a single dish of chicken between two of us again this was very bland and resembled nothing like a original tapas dish more like a chicken korma again this was hardly touched . When I enquired as to where the rest of the food was I was told they was very busy . With this we decided to cut our loses and asked for the bill . Before leaving we tried to have a conversation with the manager who is also the chef to give some honest feedback ,however he wasn’t open to listening , he’s response was “it’s normal in a tapas restaurant to receive one dish at a time between two with a large gap between dishes wasn’t it explained to you that’s what tapas is “We felt this was a very patronising remark as we eat tapas on a regular basis and know this is definitely not the case . To matters worse there was people who came in after us with multiple plates and tucking in nicely to their meals . The manager who was obviously struggling to cope on a busy Saturday night should have just apologised and admitted our order had been overlooked . If you are looking for authentic Tapas with excellent service in Wigan go to Casa Carlos this place doesn’t deserve your hard earned money ."
