"Staff were lovely and helpful and the ambience was great, but the food was disappointing. The warmed broccoli starter we had was pretty bland with cold soggy broccoli, and then the roast beef I had was just not good and not worth its price. The gravy was obviously just a bisto gravy and the veg had next to no flavour and the roasties tasted like they’d been frozen before service. We’ve been a couple times before and always had lovely food so I was surprised the the roast just didn’t meet the usual standards. I’m not sure if it’s prepped a different way or if there’s been a change in chefs but it was disappointing. The desserts were fab, and again the service was great, my only complaint is the roast and the starter. I didn’t feel it was worth a £100+ bill. I would recommend to a friend, but not their Sunday roasts unfortunately."

A wonderful little restaurant! Really enjoyed the cocktails! The vegetable pie was fantastic. A dish I was hesitant to order but then so glad I did!

The service was very poor and we waited over a. hour for our main meal. The toilets were not clean that said when the food arrived finally!! it was delicious and made the other failings acceptable

This is my second visit to The Cloth Ear, on each occasion it has been a very enjoyable experience, from the person on the door, to the guy who showed us to our table and then to the table servers. The food was delicious and plenty of it.

Food on the night was first class, unfortunately the service wasn’t, one Man that was looking after us was very good unfortunately the rest of staff wernt, we waited 15mins to be offered a drink and for second drink had to go to bar to order it there as staff never came, the girl that brought our starter didn’t bring any plates cutlery or napkins which was disappointing eating it with our fingers, overall service was very poor.

We have visited The Cloth Ear several times in the past few weeks and have always been pleased with the food quality and service. However, during our recent lunch visit, the restaurant was nearly empty and lacked atmosphere. My husband ordered the chowder, which he has enjoyed multiple times before, but this time it had more potatoes and less fish and chorizo. Our waitress mentioned that several customers had noticed this change and attributed it to a new chef. I had a cheese and smoked onion toastie, but could taste the onions more than the cheese. Despite this, we enjoyed the wine. Overall, while we have had good experiences at The Cloth Ear in the past with friends, we may try a different...

"enjoyed our evening in james st it was the best culinary experience of our trip! we had been happy to see this evening as we had a few hit-N-seals in the course of our trip to belfast. we were not disappointed and had the fabulous evening. we were quickly welcomed and sitting. the place is beautiful and spacious. revitalized and environment. the bar is great and would like to come back, only for drinks at the bar sometime. we ordered cocktails immediately. an Irish gin negroni and a traditional old fashion. my neger was absolutely excellent. I think the old fashion could have been done with real sugar cubes and not sugar syrup, but it wasn't too bad. we were quick to choose our wein. we chose a beautiful juicy red, the cline, the old vine zinfandel, 2019. to begin we had the ham hock terrine with piccalilli champ bread and some scallops with boar bell. the hanging-hock court was the best ham-hock I had. the homemade piccalilli was something else. really nice crispy and sharp sharp to help cut through the hammock and the champbrot was delicious crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. the scallops and black bells were disappointing, as they lacked no salt or genuine aroma or texture between them. we still ate it and shared the rest of my hammock. we both decided to go for the co. tyrone 270g fillet steak with sides of champ and truffle parmesan chips. red wine and pfeffer sauce. they were fantastic steaks. Actually, I didn't think I would finish mine, but I did. I have met the right choice with the jus and the truffle chips. they went so well together, the dryness of the parmesan and sweet, slightly greasy of the jus. the steaks were perfectly cooked. a medium and my medium rare. fantastic aroma on the grilled outside of the steak and beautiful texture when they pierce. we both agreed that the champ was the best champ we ever cost. it was hot, soft, so well aromatized with hot butter on the top of the copper serving pot melt. it was really the most incredible champ. I was too full of dessert. but my sample ordered the sticky toffee pudding sundae. the team was friendly enough to make me an espresso martini that was both decaf and not a sugar syrup. it was brilliant. we both managed to work our way, although a surprisingly light sticky toast desserts on Sunday. the team was fantastic. very friendly and chatting to us. the bar team did not stop, I had the pleasure of standing and watching them make a great selection of drinks and cocktails. the waiting staff were also very friendly when they check in with us at comfortable places to ensure that we were in order. we felt very well looked around. the service was very good, we didn't feel any hurry, it felt like such a free time in this restaurant. when we come back to belfast, we will be back in absolute terms and we will definitely recommend others. Thank you."

"I'm an American. I was invited to work at the queen’s university in a global conference. my airline has moved my baggage, so I stopped in the barking dog to use her wlan to check the status of my baggage and have a drink and a snack with my associate who has unusual allergies. the menu had nothing to call us, so we have decided to finish and move only our drinks./ at no point has anyone informed that it is illegal to have only drinks, and our server ran our review without mentioning any legal requirements. After I paid, someone who I suspect, the manager, came to the table and checked our reception. exactly what I thought was what they said before they cheated on me how it is illegal to buy drinks in a restaurant without eating. I apologised and explained that I had no warning. I offered to buy food retroactive and they refused. then they repeated that I was in a restaurant and not in a pub and that my activities were illegal. they denied my multiple attempts to apologise me while I explained that I am not out of the opposite. this experience was very confusing for me, because the night before me had drinks in a restaurant without food and it was no problem. in any case I was told that there is no such law and that the ordering of drinks without eating in a restaurant is very common. I've never been treated so badly in a customer service dynamic and I'm not sure why this happened. I feel targeted and totally mistreated for what does not seem to be a good reason. To finish it, it was my birthday. complete error in the name of what this person was. I will say the rest of the staff was very pleasant and accommodating."
