"Lovely atmosphere killed off by fairly brusque manner of staff dealing with vegan diner. We ordered the veggie breakfast it said a vegan alternative was available so we went for that. But vegan alternative, much to our surprise, meant: not buttering the toast, cooking the mushrooms dry without any butter/oil, and a space on the plate for where the egg should be. And the biggest surprise the same price as the veggie breakfast, at £13. Ideally vegan alternative should mean replacement but respecting the tough economical climate we are in, I understand why a like for like replacement could be costly but in this day and age, surely an extra half tomato wouldn’t be too much to ask and would cost considerably less than a couple of eggs). Catering for vegan diners should be something that shouldn’t phase a 2023 cafe. That the chefs didn’t think to use a vegan spread alternative there are SO many varieties now that it shouldn’t be hard, and they are beautifully tasting just like butter) a decent chef should be able to rise to the challenge spoilers it’s not that hard). For me it was a bit of warning sign that they couldn’t master the basics. It shouldn’t be hard being a vegan in 2023 as someone who does this for the planet, but also as someone who is dairy intolerant). But if more restaurants were to treat customers like this we’d be in trouble. I think it’s fair to act with our feet and as much as we want to support a local business, to sadly take our custom elsewhere. A customer shouldn’t be made to feel short changed after a meal. It was a rather dry without spread or butter, feedback I shared with the staff “oh sorry about that”, walking off). For a slice of in buttered toast, some dry unseasoned mushrooms, beans, half a tomato and a baji this felt a LOT for £13. A side of fresh orange juice extra at around £3 I think) tasted delicious but this was in a tiny cup and filled with large ice cubes. I raised I hadn’t been happy with my meal to the staff, and that it felt unfair paying £13, and shared what could have been done to make it better. “Sorry no alternatives, it’s just how it comes”, they said crossing their arms and not even apologising for my experience. Wowsers."

My absolute favourite place to brunch in Hitchin. We've been so many times I've lost count. From the harissa mushrooms to the grilled cheese, you can't go wrong. The coffee is excellent and the staff are super friendly.

Stopped here one sunny morning last week for a coffee and to plan our day. What a lovely place to sit out, right near the church and away from the main busy street. You know when coffee is good it needs no milk and definitely no sugar. Lovely!

I frequently go to Groundworks for coffee, brunch, and lunch, and I can confidently say that it is the best place in Hitchin for brunch! The hash brown bites are unbeatable and definitely worth trying, along with the delicious eggs benedict and fluffy scrambled eggs.

Very nice lunch sat in the sun. First visit. Good staff, giving good friendly, efficient service. We all enjoyed our meals. My smashed avocado was delicious. I'll be back for that whenever I'm in the area. We'll worth a visit, especially on a sunny day with an outside taste.

This café is a true example of top-notch quality. It has a beautiful location overlooking St Mary's Church in Hitchin. The food, including Eggs Benedict, Crushed Avocado, and sourdough breads, is exquisite, and the coffees are fabulous. It is without a doubt the best restaurant in Hitchin.

This super friendly super busy cafe is easily the best place to have breakfast in Hitchin. It shows other places just how good a vegetarian breakfast can be when so much thought is given to each item. Everything the cafe does has been looked at to make it as good and unique as it can be. This recommendation is given without reservation…

We popped in for a light breakfast. Wife had scrambled eggs on sourdough. Menu said 3 eggs. There was just enough to cover the one slice of toast. I had loaded avocado on sourdough. Plus a poached egg. £13.50. Very overpriced the amount of food. Lattes came in small glasses. Again small amount in comparison to other places. Total £31.00. So for what we got and what we paid definitely not value for money. Won’t be returning as disappointed.

My baby has an intolerance to dairy and soya and so I have had to cut out both in order to continue breastfeeding. Usually it is very difficult to find any options that I could have in a café, let alone something filling and tasty, but Groundwork’s were so brilliant. They said they could adapt most things on the menu to suit dietary requirements and the food was absolutely delicious! What a lovely treat to be able to enjoy a nice brunch! Excellent service too and a warm and welcoming atmosphere; I would definitely recommend a visit!

We stopped by Groundwork’s for breakfast this morning and were impressed by the menu and ingredient descriptions. However, we were disappointed when our meals arrived. My 3 eggs scrambled with thick cut black pudding was not as described – the eggs seemed fewer and the black pudding was not as thick as expected. My husband's smashed avocado also seemed smaller than expected, with just half an avocado and a sprinkle of sesame seeds, for a cost of £13.50 including a poached egg. The food was hot and tasty, but the pricing should be reviewed. We wanted to pay in cash but were informed they only accept card payment, which was stated on a small sign on the door.
