we started our meal with the baked cheese, so good. the carving was delicious and the portion size very generous. the environment is really quiet and pleasant and on a sunny day is really nice to sit outside and enjoy the fresh air. Make sure they visit the escapes in the river, they love it when they bring them to eat!

beautiful seating outdoors on the saar river, extremely busy under large old trees area without sitting has also beautiful restaurant and covered terrace sitting opportunity requires excellent eating and not only from the duck duck chest...with salat was very good as all other dinners a little on the slow side (all was packed)

seven years later a fast update: not much has changed here, you are still sitting very nice among the old chestnut trees on a warm summer day, the funny ducks are still parading, the place is still busy and it is recommended to have a reservation. but what is also much unchanged is eating: it is not unnecessary bad, but also not so great. the white carving, a black carving, is rather dry, the hooric (Saarland-Knödel) are made from a new rubber compound. the service is busy.

on the warm summer afternoon, the terrace and the beer garden with its wooden and benches is a wonderful place to sit, drink, eat and observe, the passing cyclists, and the ducks and gänse of the nearby slowly moving saar river. the food is German. a regional Saarland touch. it is good, not great. sour roast with gravur and hooric' (similar carrots) of the cradle (pork, unfortunately not kalbsal) of the apfel cechel (except fried, not again pan roasted, unfortunately) were all good, the espresso with egg likoer is a gigantic concoction, and very full white. the service has improved considerably in the run of the years, which is good. the inside of the restaurant is beautifully decorated, Bav...

This restaurant specializes in two things only: roast duck and roast goose. There are a few other things on the menu but for the optimal experience stick with either of these. Ordering is fairly simple; a half or a whole bird and both come with...the traditional red cabbage and potato sides. They do have a web site and in spring and summer it is always best to try to book ahead as the location is right at riverside and is a very popular stop with local motorcycle riders and clubs as well as families local and otherwise. There is beer on tap and also a grappe exclusive to them which is quite nice after such a full meal. It is slightly sweet and raisiny with a peppery back bite. The winter men...

"I'm not keen on negative reviews, as everyone is entitled to an off night, bit the experience was pretty shoddy. Was a busy Saturday night in Saarbrucken, World Cup quarter finals playing everywhere... and we were a party of 7 that hadn't booked anywhere on...an overnight stop over. We checked with the restaurant if they could take us, they said yes and led us to the table. Staff were pleasant and helpful. This was about 8pm. We ordered drinks, food, one of which was a mixed platter of cold meats as an entrée. The mixed platter arrived an hour later. An hour. For sliced cold meat. The waitress was apologetic and as we were in no rush (at that point), we just ordered more drinks. The platter was pretty average, but then we'd just come from Italy where Antipasti, Salami and Cheese is infinitely better. By 10pm there was no sign of the mains. We asked when the dinner might come and the waitress said she would check. When she came back, the response was that they couldn't tell when they would be ready, but not soon... and that was it. This is 10pm. Two hours after coming in and being told they could accommodate us. The outside tables of the restaurant were busy, the large inside pretty empty. We chose to pay (a lot, because it's pretty expensive) for what we'd consumed, and left. Shame the staff in the restaurant kitchen didn't care as much about their customers as the waitress did, but even so... a shoddy service, elevated prices that simply benefits from its location in central Saarbrucken. There are better alternatives all around the centre, some of them much better value too. I'm sure they have better days... But if you want to get a reliable, quality service at a good price... Maybe don't choose a Saturday night at Gaathaus Zahm."
