"Went out with our friend for his 49th Birthday, had a lovely meal, service was excellent, food delicious and very reasonably priced. Me and hubby had lamb, which was very tender, Bangladeshi birthday boy was vegan and was not disappointed. Staff very friendly, a bit excessive with the hand shaking,but that's my English reserve !. The place was full on a Wednesday night, with mainly locals, so whatever they are doing, they are doing right. I would recommend booking to avoid disappointment! The doggy bag was just as tasty the morning after"

"Lived fairly local for many years but never been. We called in on lunch time we hadn't made a reservation but were able to sit in or outside. It was extremely busy and even caught the staff off guard how busy it was too. The atmosphere was lovely and lovely surroundings. We were told we would have a long wait for food, but with the good selection of drinks available. (thank you for a decent 0% gin) we were happy to wait. Menu cators for every one vegan vegetarian and meat eaters, and a good options . Food served hot and good portions a nd the steak was delicious. The service was excellent and friendly. Spotlessly clean. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and felt even thou very busy it was relaxed and we were kept informed of any delays. We will return. Excellent Norfolk pub to visit."

"We decided to go here for New Year’s Eve lunch as we didn’t want just a Sunday lunch option and the number of pubs open was limited .we have been to the pub many times in the past and had good food and a good time. Sadly this was not the case this time . Our starter came out reasonably quickly but it then took an hour and a half for our main meals to arrive and I had to ask twice where our food was. People that came in after us had finished a two course meal before our mains had even arrived. The food quality was very poor. My belly pork was very dry, the short rib was gelatinous, the fish was very wet with soggy batter underneath and the Sunday lunch was over done and you couldn’t cut the beef with a knife. We didn’t have a pudding as I was discussed that we had to wait so long and when the food came it wasn’t worth eating. I did speak to the waiter before I left to explain how unhappy I was. The place was packed and they shouldn’t have taken the bookings if the kitchen couldn’t keep up. I wouldn’t recommend this pub, which is a real shame."

"This is 2 stars only because the ale selection is good and the pints cost £2.50. I rarely pop in here tbh but occasionally I think I 'll just call in to see what beers they have on and get a cheap pint. I always regret it. This is not a pub, it is a large canteen where everyone has gone for cheap food. The absolute worse thing, much worse than the dirty plates and glasses left everywhere, is the bar service and the way that people for some bizarre reason queue at the bar like you would queue at the till in a shop. The bar is massive with plenty of space to stand at but an orderly queue is always formed behing one of the tills and I find it infuriating. This is not how a pub works. The awful queueing system is probably a symptom of the awful standard of bar service and inept bar staff here and is probably the only way the single member of bar staff is capable of know who is next to serve. You are never greeted with a smile and a hello like a normal pub but its just a who 's next or a shouted can I help anyone directed towards a line of people queueing away from the bar. The dirty glasses everywhere in this pub are even on the bar, there is no point in taking your empty glass to the bar on the way out as it will just sit there for ages with no attempt to clear it up, its as if someone on bar service feels it is beneath them to clear away empty glasses. There are much better pubs in Downham, The Crown which is a proper pub and a much nicer drinking experience and The Live and Let Live which is also a proper pub where you can watch the football and like the Crown the bar staff there know proper pub etiquette. Having said that you can get a late drink in this shameful canteen like wetherspoons when the other pubs have called last orders so swings and roundabouts."
