"We have visited The Fox for Sunday lunch today. Everything from our initial phone call this morning was handled expertly! I rang at around 10am to enquire about availability and was advised that they could accommodate us at our preferred time. Both of us chose the beef and pork Sunday lunch, which was, without question, the best lunch we have had not only in Wensleydale, but probably ever. Generous home cooked portions, portions, piping hot and very tasty. The meat was very nice too. The service from all of the staff was excellent. I explained that one of our party was vegan, which often initiates panic or otherwise. Not here…..I was comprehensively told what they could provide, and what would have to be omitted, which was the first reassuring reason for choosing this pub. Often staff or owners aren’t sure of what is vegan and what is not. To find a pub as friendly as this, who know what they are doing, in the middle of Wensleydale was a revelation. Price wise, they are on a par with most other pubs in the area, but they are streets ahead of their competition in terms of giving the customer what they want, and making sure they plan to return. Well done to everyone involved, and make no mistake, we will be back. Probably next Sunday !!"

We stopped by for a quick drink this afternoon and found a charming pub with great character. The selection of ales was well-maintained and the landlady was lovely.

Really fantastic pub. Our party of 6 had a great meal and some local real ale. The kitchen went out of their way to cater for a dairy free diet. Plenty of vegetarian options and everyone said they enjoyed it.

Excellent local village pub! We've called in here several times while staying in the area. Great lunch spot after hiking Pen Hill or for evening pints and a burger. Ample space in the beer garden or a smaller covered area for outside dining.

Just spent a week in West Witton and ate 4 times in this pub. The Sunday lunch is the best we’ve had in a pub. It included 6 types of veg. They made us and Oscar the dog very welcome. I’d certainly recommend it to everyone . We talked to a couple who were staying near Aysgarth and they’d been told to go to the Fox as it is the best in the area.

I stayed in West Witton over the New Year weekend and visited the Fox Hounds pub most days. The staff at the pub were very friendly and welcoming, especially the bar staff. Although I did not eat there, the food looked delicious! I will definitely come back in the future. The pub is also very dog-friendly, and my dog Flynn had a great time there!

"We arrived frazzled because we drove around the grounds in the dark not knowing where to go. The signage inside the grounds is no help at all. Allow time for this if you haven't been before. Fortunately we had because we wanted a pre dinner drink in the bar before we ate. Even when we did arrive we weren't sure if we had arrived at the back entrance because we stood for ages with no welcome or acknowledgement. A very disappointing start to our evening. When someone did come they didn't take our coats. We went through to the snug for a drink. They gave us menus and went away. Later came back for our order. We got our drinks and ordered our food. Then very quickly afterwards we were asked to go through to the restaurant. We had only had a couple of sips of our drinks and it was still prior to the time we had actually booked our table for (7.30pm). We felt rushed. The food came and was fabulous. I had the beetroot starter which had beautifully cooked beetroots and some pickles. It also had a grain through it. I couldn't remember what the grain was so asked a member of staff. She didn't know so went away to ask and came back saying it was probably buckwheat....probably! My main was pork belly with parsnip and an apple reduction. The pork could have been cooked a little longer. I think belly needs to be very well cooked until really soft. The top skin was impossible to cut through as it was not crisp, I couldn't eat it. A steak knife would have helped. Having said that it was still a good dish which could have been excellent. We had sides of mashed potato and greens with pickles both superb. The presentation of both dishes was innovative and inviting. Portion size was good too not tiny portions of fiddled with food which I much prefer. The service was not as polished as the food. There was no obvious manager and we had different servers which is never quite as good as one for the entire meal. The servers were scruffy not appropriate for such a lovely building. Overall it was OK but could have been superb with more attention to some details. Service: 2 Location: 3"
