"We have been several times to this restaurant and have enjoyed it in the past. The other day we went and had the sushi sashimi platter and mixed tempura and they were fine. But we ordered green tea and were served Jasmine tea. When I queried this with the server (not Japanese no one who works there is Japanese) she said that that was all they had. I can assure you that Jasmine tea is not green tea and it is not good enough to put green tea on the menu and serve jasmine instead. The worst part of the meal was the beef ramen. Absolutely Horrible. In a creamy white soup with no flavour apart from cream milk? Something insipid and white in any case. I think the server said that it had blended tofu in it or something like that? I have lived in Japan for a year and worked in Japanese restaurants after that for over 3 years and I can assure you that I have never seen, or tasted anything like that. The beef in it was stir fried for goodness sake! 3 minute noodles you cook at home have more flavour. I heard a neighbouring table ask if one of the 3 dishes on their table was actually beef teriyaki so maybe the kitchen was having a bad day. After watching them take down the 'CASH ONLY FOR SATURDAY LUNCH ' signs and paying the added 10% service charge for 2 people at 1630 in the afternoon we will never return. I did feed back that the ramen wa not good enough as we left and the server said that they 'd tell the kitchen. Just don 't go, or if you do see if they 're serving green tea instead of jasmine and just don 't, whatever you do, order the ramen or you can always try it at home by boiling milk and adding instant noodles to that. Seriously that bad. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: £30–40 Food: 2 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 2 Recommended dishes: Sushi, Tempura"

the waitress did not seem to know what was vegan and asked me to order something else. then brought me fish instead of herbal tempura. I'm sure they have vegan options, it just needs a little forward planning if I told them I could probably have made clear what I could eat. I wasn't too sure after the table staff didn't know that prawns were on the non-Veg list, so they didn't eat anything, but fortunately a burrito of okra in the evening, so I survived.

I have been an avid lover of Umai for years now, and have spent birthdays, special occasions and a lot of money and time here. Food is always great however me and my partner came in tonight for a quick bite, one main dish, a side, and a drink between us. We tried to order straight away and the lady told us it is a minimum spend of £18 per person? So for example if i came in to get a ramen bowl alone £13.50) i would have to spend more money to dine there. If i had an eating disorder, or a medical condition where I could not eat full meals , they would deny service? Completely unacceptable and such a shame considering how much i usually love it here. Very let down by the business. Staff did no...

The food was great, we ordered katsu curry and a variety of sushi dishes which were really good quality. Having said this, the service was unfortunately subpar when we visited. We made a booking for around 7:30pm and I am aware that for a couple the normal time would be a maximum of one hour and a half to eat. We had finished our main within the first hour and were still eating our dessert when the waitress asked if we had done. We said that we hadn’t and she came back less than 5 minutes later saying that we needed to leave soon because they had other bookings. I double checked the time on my phone just in case we had over stayed by accident and it had been exactly one hour since our reserv...

"Beautifull hotel, I guess one can call it trendy , but I just don 't understand how they can justify the price £130/night and that most of the time will go to £160 as they run out of entry level ones. So I guess the answer is there because people pay for it! But let 's just make some relevant comparisons Birmingham Grand literally in the heart of the city, brand new, 5* hotel, with all recently decorated rooms to the highest standard is £135 15 for breakfast. Needless to say rooms are air conditioned, fully equipped and genuinelly very posh. Hotel has lifts, has porters and the service is top notch. The Lion is barelly 4* just for trendiness alone, but the actual quality of furnishing is closer to 3*, has no lift and you will be lugging your bags up and down mutiple flights of stairs (and I mean multiple like 8 going up and down) trought narrow corridors to mediocre room (nothing wrong with it just mediocre) which isn 't even air conditioned. Sorry, I just don 't get it. That said restaurant is good fully fine dining if you are into it. Althought in my oppinion it doesn 't fit into the rest of the hotel. So it is ~3.5* hotel which is very youghtfull and trendy and then you get 5* fine dining with very tiny portions for the dinner (which is not criticism of restaurant, it is very good on it 's own). In conclussion I just don 't get what niche this hotel is filling, who stays there and why. The price for the rooms should be £75 95 tops. Shreesbury is not exactly prime tourists destination either (at least shouldn 't). But it seems it is working out for them, I just would not recommend it, I would not stay in it again and it is definatelly not worth the price. Neither in isolation, nor in comparison."

"Open since 1970 and located on Mardol, one of Shrewsbury’s oldest streets @thecurryhouseshrewsbury serves locally sourced ingredients married with traditional spices and chillies from the Indian subcontinent, a match made in heaven. 5 5 Recommended Price No better way to kick off proceedings but with popadoms, chutneys and fresh onion salad. On to appetisers and there are so many tempting dishes to choose with many of these exclusive to the curry house. Our first time trying Pani Puri. A sweet and spicy hot street food snack filled with chickpeas and tamarind sat on a bed of crunchy, nutty Bombay mix. With a building but pleasant heat, definitely something everyone should try. The quality and freshness of the seafood was exceptional. Spicy king prawns were huge and cooked to perfection. Charred on the outside for flavour but juicy and meaty. Trio of King scallops were beautifully tender and of a good size with sweetness from the tamarind liquor. Lamb rogan Josh tender lamb shoulder in a medium hot ginger tomato and onion sauce. A strong take on a traditional favourite of ours. Fresh from the Tandoor a generous mix of marinaded chicken, lamb, king prawns and a chargrilled lamb chop. The Tandoori deluxe massalla sauce was the perfect blend of sweetness melting into a subtle heat which brought the dish together perfectly. The curry house takes traditional dishes and flavours from the Indian subcontinent and elevates them to a level beyond expectations. Thank you for our invite to share the exciting menu created with passion and creativity.
