"Thoroughly enjoyed fine dining experience at the recently reopened seafood restaurant, Am Kai, beautifully situated in the port area of Hamburg, directly on the Elbe river. It was formerly known as ‘Au Quai’, French for ‘At the Port’, but was renamed after extensive interior redesigning....Guests have a choice of sitting in the outdoor patio area, beautifully overlooking the river, and other dining areas, of which one comprises of an open table. The restaurant is actually quite big, but not cramped at all, is tastefully furnished with its marine ambiance and the French -Asian fusion meals were excellent. The dishes (also vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options available) come in small portions, as the idea here is actually for people to order different dishes which they share, so everyone gets to taste something different, hence the affordable prices ranging between 10-20 Euro. Service was impeccable, the dishes were quite original in tastes and flavours, which were promptly served and the general atmosphere was very cosy and romantic. I particularly enjoyed the tuna tartare with lemon and coriander, the crab tempura and the spicy fried Aubergine with chili and coriander. The wine list was eye boggling with bottles ranging from 28 Euro (for the more delicate pockets) to 3000 Euro (for the “you know whos)"

We booked in advanced and get a table in the balcony. It is a quite a view there, especially with a sunset. The wine the waiter recommended is really nice. Forgot the name, but it has a little cute goat printed in the brand. The starter we ordered is tuna tartare. The fish is fresh and the seasoning is just right. The one of main dishes is grilled tiger prawn. really delicious. I ordered bouillabarisse. a little salty though for me. The service there is good, our waiter is funny and friendly. Will recommend this place to friends if they visit Hamburg harbor. Visualizza piatti

I have to admit, my expectations were low as my food experiences in Germany have generally been less than stellar. There is only so many schnitzels I can eat before my body rejects fried food. Our favorite food so far in the entire country was curry wurst and it's basically sausage and ketchup. I'm happy to report, the food here was superb. However, as we mingled outside for some pre-dinner drinks, I noticed a blanket carefully placed on each chair. I didn't think too much of it until the temperature dropped by 20 degrees while we were enjoying our meal. Everyone bundled up and used the blankets to avoid freezing to death. Next time, we'll sit inside from the start!

This restaurant is a dauntingly experience, located at the harbour combined with a classy, upscale athmosphere. The decoration is mix of Chinese, Buddah, Modern design and Bonsai trees. The food is absolute suberb, served in an enhanting way, but not overstated. At the entrance the hostess takes your jackets to the cloakroom, and leads you to your table. The waiters are professional and polite, you definitely feel like a queen (or king in its palace... The one thing that none of us liked, were the potatoes and mini-zucchini, which tasted like something mixed with cinnamon and nuts...no idea how to describe that. Might have been a special menu, but it was a weird combination. The ravioli with...

"There's always a question (in my mind, anyway) as to Michelin's accuracy/usefulness outside of France. In the US, it's not very helpful at all and in Europe ex-France, I've found it hit and miss. Haerlin represented only my second stab at a two-star in Germany and the first meal (Heinz Winkler), while a thoroughly wonderful overall experience, felt like the second star might have been a stretch. Not so at Haerlin, this was a two-star meal that stands fork-to-fork with any I can remember. The food is stylized to within an inch of its life, but close to flawless in both conception and execution. Outside of a large selection of generally unremarkable breads and a luke-warm roasted onion broth added to an amuse at table side that probably should have been hotter, the meal was simply one perfect dish after another. Maybe the sorbet intermezzo was a little old school in such a fashion forward meal, but - hey - it was delicious! Keep it.The room is suitably formal, luxurious in a traditional style, and quite comfortable. The pace of service might be a little leisurely for some (I ate alone and the four-course menu (seven + courses, including amuses, etc) pushed it a bit, stretching just over three hours. However, the friendly and attentive staff kept an eye out the entire time and stopped by if the time between courses presented the opportunity. The somm, in particular, was a great diversion, visiting from time to time to discuss the varied and interesting wines on offer. He provided useful insight into the outstanding selection of trocken Rieslings on the list. He guided me to a 2001 Burklin-Wolf GG that, at Eu 150, was both a great bottle of mature white and a tremendous value for a wine of this quality in this type of restaurant. (Good luck finding a white burgundy of this quality at this price at any multi-star restaurant - or at retail, for that matter.) He also suggested a wonderful German Pinot Noir by the glass that worked perfectly with the meat course and wasn't terribly expensive. The list is extensive, but not the tome you see at some restaurants, but don't be fooled - wine service at Haerlin is both a major plus and represents notable value in the context of multi-star restaurants.I'm not going to argue two-star vs three-star because that distinction often seems to be kind of mysterious (and tangentially related to the food), but I will say that this place certainly deserves two stars. I had just a flat-out great meal. If you can work in a visit, Haerlin should be high on your list."
